I have a 77' F250 4dr flatbed ex-RR truck with I-beams. I have a 85':F250 4wd Factory Dana straight axle.leafspring donor truck. I wish to keep the coil spring suspension. Is this possible to do for the backyard mechanic? Any suggestions or info is greatly appreciated.
Cool truck. I’m a bump guy myself but also have a dent. It’s a ‘78 and also an old feed/ranch truck. It was my dads ranch truck that he has been the owner of since I was born. He finally let me have it and hoping to do a similar build as this one.
Matt...this is so ironic! I'm in the middle of a '79 F250 4x4 Ranger with the 400 that was the same color brown and it is now very close to the same yellow. I went with the early 70's factory Prairie Yellow which my brother had on his new '72 F250 4x4. I always loved that color. I have to confess, the only place you will see the brown is directly behind the engine on the firewall. It will get painted black back there when and if I ever pull the engine. Right now though, that 400 runs like a scalded ape. It's obviously been rebuilt and cammed, 4 barrel and long tube headers. My only complaint is the automatic, much prefer a four speed manual. I went with old school black solid steel wheels that look like a factory steel wheel only much deeper, 10 x 16 with 12.50 16 x 33 radial Cooper tires. That was the classic bad a$$ look back in the 60's and 70's. Most everything is done, paint, wheels, shocks, (already has 4" lift springs....I just need to do the seat, put interior back together and then all the body parts, bed, etc... I also went to the '76/'77 grill style, kind of a tribute to my first new pickup, a '76. As far as this beauty that you picked up, I love it. They did an awesome job on the bed, very detailed. I'd feed in that anytime and all the time. I can't quite figure out the bale spear though, maybe they're just setting one bale out at a time and putting a bale feeder over it. Usually up here in MT we have bale feeder beds on pickups. If it doesn't work out with your potential buyer, get ahold of me.
i love dentside trucks as well as bumpsides, my current project is a 79 F350 supercab 4x4 and because of its rarity it will be a full OEM job, my 77 is just an F350 clone with dana 60 axles and a 12v
I have a 400 in my 78 truck and the first internal part I replaced was the worn nylon cam gear timing set , so much play , it amounted to about 7 degrees of timing error
Always loved that rig! We have a 79 f350 that I still feed with part of the time that has a 400 and it’s a really good engine… We have several of the 351m’s but none have been running since I was a kid… I have 3 or 4 modified engines if you end up needing some parts or something…
I have filled the crankcase up all the way to the bottom of the piston with fairly good looking use motor oil I got from the local filling station. (5gals). Filling the bottom end completely will allow you to put a penetrating oil in the spark plug holes and on top of the piston and then the minimum will seep past the rings! I use 50%, Acetone and 50% ATF! Automatic trans, fluid is a detergent and with soak in the metal. A 50/50 mix of those is better than any PB blast or WD 40. Look it up! It's a proven fact. And I have had a 100% success with a motor that has been sitting and trys to act stuck. The old 351M,400M seems to try to get that way after a while of no attention...
I have seen this truck. Used to drive by it all the time in Newkirk, Ok. I always looked for it on my way through and wondered what had happened to it as I quit seeing it some years ago.
I essentially have the exact same truck and story even. I bought a flatbed '79 F250 feedtruck in 1999 with a 400 in it as my first truck at 14. I still have it. The 351M is not a doggy engine, its one of the better ones of the era. Your other options were the 400 and the big 460. The 400 was the worst engine of them.
Nice find. I had a 79 F250 plow truck w/ 351M. It was my understanding that the 351M was in trucks and the 400M was for cars. Don't know the logic behind it or if it was even true.
my understanding is that ford installed the cams in 351m/400 4 degrees advanced to get better emissions and that kills the bottom end torque and that makes them a dog, i have done a few cam swaps and that really wakes those engines up, its a shame those engines have such a bad rep it is designed like a scaled down 460 btw putting a fuel tank in those later model cabs is a pain it is double wall there and the older ones are single wall
Can you message me when you get time and possibly share your knowledge on these 351M..?? I have a 77' F250 1ton 4dr.Crewcab. Ex. Railroad truck. Used to run the track in its day. Low miles. Locally own. I purchased from the railroad. F250 351Mb2brl Granny 4sp Factory ordered COFF250. Radio/AC delete: 1ton hinged flatbed Dana 60, replace with a newer Corporate Dana 80. And a built C-6 auto replaced the 4sd. Wish to add a 4wd front end. I wanna keep the coil spring suspension and use a 85 F250 straight axle I already have. Any input or knowledge is very appreciated.
If that 351M isn't wasted they can be woken up ,,, from the factory they had very lean carb jetting for emissions and other power robbing emissions related compromises..
You can take 390 2bbl heads, fairly easy to find, usually capable of direct use, and with a good valvejob of course and possibly cut for higher compression, (due to preference) will make an huge difference in the performance and power from a 351M. Long tube headers are a big gain also! I like a aluminum Intake for the height, useful for gain. But I advise you keep a 500-500+cfm 2barrel Holley or Motorsport carburetor with a 4barrel bolt pattern! I swear it would have just as much power and probably perform better than a 4bbl. Most everything is over carburetorated anyway. You won't be disappointed. Also, if you do a intake, if it's possible, a mild can swap is night & day gain with the. 390ci heads. Also the timing chain is a week link when original. These 351 are a destroked 400M and run like a sewing machine. Remember to use 390 2 barrel heads! Reason being is the intake valve is larger than the 4bbl.
Matt I have a question, I recently acquired a 76 f100 shortbed (full time 4wd). Marty report says is 1 of 3 built (Wimbledon white over Bali blue). Does that 1 of 3 impact the value in your opinion?
I would love to have a truck like that that's beautiful looking show truck I don't know if I'd use it for a farm work it's too good to look in truck would love to have one like it
Nice find Matt! King pin Dana 60 too👍

Now that is a work of art.
Pretty cool find! Congrats. Seeing all of these old Fords reminds me of my Dad’s truck. Thanks for sharing!
What a cool rig!
U sir have some beautiful old Ford trucks

Love the truck I've never seen one set up that way, learn something new every day!.
Nice find Matt! :) pretty cool it's lived life local to you. Take care my friend
When the family put it up for sale I went looked at it. Very cool it all worked a year ago.
I have a 400 in my 78 truck and the first internal part I replaced was the worn nylon cam gear timing set , so much play , it amounted to about 7 degrees of timing error
What a truck! That thing really looks good and looks to have been built well.🙌✌

Where are you located. I'm interested in a few things. Thanks
I have seen this truck. Used to drive by it all the time in Newkirk, Ok. I always looked for it on my way through and wondered what had happened to it as I quit seeing it some years ago.
That is a very cool truck.
That's one sharp truck!
It's à very nice truck! I hope you can get running better and the new owner liker it!
That is awesome! Where does a guy get fenders like that?

the 351M is a de-stroked 400 ci motor
True facts !
Its a beauty

I agree
When did they stop putting the tank in the cab? My 77' F250 crewcab has the factory tank behind the rear seat.

I agree, the timing has Alot to so with the performance.
@@chadmartin5640 ?? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you or you misspoke but 390 heads or any FE head will not fit a 351 or 400m..
78 and 79 F250 4x4 8ft box is what I want. I like the yellow but not the back end.

Hey Matt, are the outer door skins the same on a 67-72 door? I know the guts and locks and such are different on 67. Thanks.
Different skins
@@Aaron-vq2lc turns out no, they are the same outer skins.
👍👊
I miss the old intro
Gorgeous truck if it didn't have the feed truck crap
this is a really cool truck!! I just put that same Dana60 under my 68 F250 High boy
Get rid of all that freed truck crap
