Inside A Futuristic $23,500,000 Oceanfront Mansion | On The Market | Architectural Digest

- Today Architectural Digest brings you to Encinitas, California for a tour of the stunning and modern Crescent House, a spacious mansion situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Currently on the market for $23.5 million and designed by architect Wallace E. Cunningham, the shape of the crescent moon was a recurrent source of inspiration - from the circular terrace to crescent-shaped infinity pool. The effect is almost futuristic, something reinforced by having featured in the third season of HBO's 'Westworld.' With unbeatable ocean views and 4 bedrooms across over 6,200 square feet of space, the Crescent House is a uniquely luxurious home, worthy of its extraordinary location.

The good news is that when it falls into the ocean next year, all of the sustainable materials will provide a bizarrely designed haven for the ocean wildlife.
Yes, that dirt cliff would make me very nervous given the history of earthquakes and landslides during heavy rains in Southern California. If it was a rock cliff then I would be totally in love with this. It looks like something from an Ironman movie
😭😭😭😭😭
🤭
🤣
Your comment made my day 😛😛😛
"On this patio I feel like I'm on the bow of a ship"
Give it 20 years and you'll feel like you're on the bridge of a submarine
Less than 20 years I think!
A sunken submarine
Thanks, I haven't laugh so hard in days .
This is money laundering property
💀💀💀💀💀😂😂🤣🤣
23 million and the bath is a triangular hole in the floor that you have to squat in, step into to open some drawers and you'd break your neck if you tripped on the taps. Outside looks like a multi-storey car park and is falling into a cliff. This may be the most ridiculous property AD have shown
That bath was mind boggling!!
Exactly hahaha
Totally agree. This is a white elephant.
It didn't even have a shower on the ceiling. Not even a detachable shower on the side, like its common sense.
I had to re-watch after your comment but you’re right…the tub is legit a triangular hole in the ground. This guy went totally overboard on his artistic theme and forgot that this was actually something people had to live in each day. Feels totally like an academic architectural study/project and not something someone would actually want to live in each day. Everything in this house looks like it could stab or slice you lol
The architect says "the house appears to move the entire day". Duh, it's slipping off the cliff into the sea
🤣🤣 you shouldn’t have
😆
Lmao 😂😂
AHAHAHAH thank you for the laugh
LMAO, that's funny
Wow. Beautiful view of the concrete wall from that pool.
I was thinking the same, why would you not want to be able to see the ocean while in the pool???
you can clearly see when a house is not created with the purpose of living in, but rather an investment art piece. this concrete structure made of harsh lines, sharp angles and unfamiliar shapes seems impractical to live in, but serves more of a purpose as a demonstration of wealth. to live in this home tells those around you that you can afford another home when this one sinks into the ocean, that you have a pool but never use it, that every time anything breaks in this house you can afford to have a specialist in parallelogram sinks to come and fix it. the architect has made an extremely artistic space, but let’s be honest, not many older people would want to exist in a cold concrete box for the rest of their lives.
I think it is a storage facility for someone that owns 25 to 50 tables.
in my opinion its the worst kind of architecture. it just feels so sterile. like Patrick Bateman sterile.
Parallelogram sinks lmao!
For sure, this is a place for people who collect properties as speculative investments, not an actual home.
I wouldn’t mind it at all the views are great. Light is tremendous. Why should you live in an ordinary box, if you can afford something different?
Swimming pool where you can't swim. Splendid.
The concept is interesting but the result is a lot of unusable space in the house due to the shapes.
It's not a bad thing. Because large spaces require multiplication of furniture: sofas, bookshelves, chairs, dining tables etc...
For anyone else who this house seems familiar to: it was used as the filming location for the opening scene of Westworld, season three.
OH MY GOD I WAS JUST THINKING THAT IT REMINDED ME OF WESTWORLD
I also thought it was Alicia keys' house but no!! They look so similar
@@lydias2980 Alicia's is much more organic and liveable.
Yes! The new season is out now too!
Well that definitely make sense.Someone pointed out this was an investment because of its art.
And that's how a truly villain coastal mansion looks like.
Especially with all the fire features🔥
I find it ironic that the architect said he made the home to be accessible to everyone with the ramps and different counter heights, but has a potentially dangerous hole in the floor of the primary bathroom (with stairs no less!)
0:22 That looks scarily precarious lol I live in the UK and ive seen MANY houses fall down cliffs like that from erosion.
This was also my first thought xD
It's america. Luckily they can just use guns to scare the erosion away.
It will. They get earthquakes
That’s scary lol
14:08 - the water is coming over the concrete breakers eroding the base
It's undeniably a striking house with many interesting ideas. The one thing I don't get is the pool, which to me seems like the afterthought. Why stick a pool in a shady off-corner when you've got so much ocean-side space? It's so ..... tucked away
Too much erosion on the ocean side. Can't put a pool there. In a shade spot is better as it's hot there but the pool is more for looks than function.
Afterthought?! The entire design of the home "revolves" around the pool! 🤣
Wondering why no rooftop pool&jacuzzi instead of this dead concrete dolphin theatre with no views 🙈
This is money laundering property
I, a lowly poor, would never want to live in a house like this. However, I think it's incredibly impressive that the design and features are so unique and striking that I instinctively recognized it from the premier episode of Westworld S03. The scene in which it appears was filmed mostly at night, with very few wide angles yet the DNA of this house was an integral part of the production design. Kudos to the designer for making something truly 1 in a billion.
This goes to show that you can’t design a space solely around views of the ocean.. this has got to be the most awkward and impractical house I’ve ever seen. The architect clearly designed it with no specific ideas on who it’ll accommodate, and I doubt any child, young adult or elderly person would enjoy squeezing into the awkward corners of the tub, the pool, or the kitchen counters.
The tub is more like a water feature than a tub
I watch a lot of design channels and view the interiors of many peoples homes on RUclips and this is handsdown the most impractical and cold and badly designed and quite frankly down right dangerous interior I have ever seen. Apart from the fact that it will slide off into the ocean sometime soon, the amount of windows and glass and concrete in an earthquake doesn't bear thinking about and the angles everywhere are an accident waiting to happen. Glass = sunlight= fading of furniture and clothes and damages the skin, its like a torture chamber where you can't get away from the sun and hard lines. Just terrible. Good luck whoever is stupid enough to buy this.
Hey 👋
imagine bumping your body into every sharp corner of this house, " very effortless" for old couples
Sounds like you jelly
Glass blocks nearly 100% of UVB rays.
This is my neighbors house and I totally agree
I wonder how many years it has before falling into the ocean
50?
Just don't look down 😲
The footing is in bedrock.
Depending how deep the footings go, you might see parts of the cliff fall before the house does
@@bngr_bngr even if the house would keep standing strong, the value of the property will tumble if the garden starts eroding away
All I could think of was... one slip, and I'm dead. Those sharp steel plates in the firepits look perfect for a final destination episode.
not to mention that its falling into the sea any minute
1. That's not a pool, that's a water decoration. 2. The house is also a covered statement to Putin that the US has enough gas to burn.
PS: The bathtub is terrible
Pov you live in a trailer and youre trying to justify it
@@truegs88 wow, very intelligent. According to you, only people who are rich can rate art.
The pool looks like a zoo enclosure! Can't see the ocean at all! Horrible hard lines and stainless steel. I'd absolutely abhor living there.
I believe the ocean already has a bigger claim to this land than I would.
So impressive, yet it feels cold and depressing. I have a feeling it looks so much better in person.
It’s not a happy house for sure 😅🥲
Kitchen is a crime for a house that nice
Ok - put aside the danger of living with razor sharp tables, counters, and the fire place. Put aside a walk in closet that breaks your hip if you change your clothes in the dark.. It’s the absolute gall of this $23mm hazard house to put a tiny sunken bathtub(?) between the cabinet and sinks??? Someone will 100% fall in, or stub toe on the ground faucet. Also, how should you open those cabinets in the back? @8:30 there is clearly no where to comfortably sit, saying it’s sloped perfectly lmao 🤣😂
I think they messed up while designing/building and were just like “let’s just put a hole there for them to wash in and call it art”.
This home is "nice" in the traditional sense, but it does almost feel lair-like and somewhat of a cold vibe. An aspect that's driving this could be the heavy use of concrete without enough other architectural and interior design elements to balance it all out. Certainly a lot of home for $23.5M, but it doesn't feel worthy of the gorgeous California landspace on which it sits.
"I want the house to be accessible for all ages" puts the bath in the primary bathroom in the ground with the taps on the floor right next to the sink so someone can trip and fall into the bath tub and smash their head against a concrete wall
Call me a hater, I don’t find the house very calming. All those sharp angles would be like living inside Picasso’s Guernica painting.
IDK about the weather on the California coast, but that bluff is one storm surge away from falling into the ocean.
Same
The patio already has multiple cracks in the concrete indicating the bluff is unstable and eroding. They're trying to offload this house before it collapses, run.
Also, just because you can design it doesn't mean you have to. The house feels cold, convoluted, and awkward. It's as appealing as this guys untucked shirt.
....meanwhile Steve Jobs was always on stage with dirty shoes, a turtleneck, and beat up jeans and revolutioned the way we use phones.......don't be fooled by the exterior, people working at Macys wear suits making minimum wage.
The random different types of shapes makes it almost uncomfortable imo.
bro imagine you're just doing the deed in the bedroom during a party and everyone outside can see. and people are just able to walk in and out 💀💀💀
For $23 million, I think I'd want more than a half-acre of land to live on, hah.
Average land value Los Angeles to Long Beach is 2.6 million per acre and I assume this location is on the expensive side of that average.
Maybe someone with unlimited money would act like there’s nothing to think about for including a big yard, but in reality would most people buying this house prefer an extra half acre of grass for $2 million?
Also consider for this property if they wanted a half acre area to play on, they could just walk outside their property line to the common area for lots of space. A large majority of people essentially don’t use their back yards and balconies if they have one
@@brettcarter5142 I feel like you missed my point.
If I am spending $24 million on a house... I'd prefer a bit of distance and privacy from my neighbors.
@@Jogwheel but is it worth driving up the property asking price 10% for essentially a few feet on either side of the property?
@@brettcarter5142 Again, you are missing my point. For $24 million I'd expect several hundred feet of oceanfront to myself. No neighbors at all.
@@Jogwheel how do you expect that? How are you pricing real estate to say you expect more? Do you have a good comparable to point to in the same area to help indicate it’s overpriced and it’s fair to expect more at that price? Are you working out the price per sq foot combined with land to say it’s overpriced? In an expensive city with this much land this house would easily be way too cheap at just 24 million and it’s unrealistic in an expensive area to expect houses not to be packed into lots, there’s a reason why downtown’s are filled with expensive houses and small backyards, the price per sq foot is drastically more than people are willing to actually pay
I live in the area and have seen this house and the context of the street it’s on and can tell you it sticks out and I think looks very tacky in comparison to the more understated homes around it.
It's not for everybody, but you have to admit it is unique and a total standout. (Secret: This is where Tony Stark goes to get in some beach time.)
The exterior is beautiful but does the interior design really need exaggerated angles? I noticed the kitchen counter and even the beds are angled, I sense vertigo rather than a nice asymmetrical aesthetic
I never usually comment on these vids but I could not help myself this time. I thought for the price it would sweep me off my feet . however , just like the Ocean seems to be doing to the land, those thoughts were corroded instantly LOL
It;s more interpretive art than it is functional in any way shape or form. It honestly looks like a
legit old parking garage that was converted into a home. Everything is dated as well , so i don;t know who would buy this for that price and not have to put Millions more into it just to bring it up to date and functional for humans , but I can see how maybe Aliens would dig that underground garage parking vibe. Sorry for being long winded , but honestly I was shook by what this IS for the price.. Oh and let;s not forget the manhole like bath , seriously WTF?
"Although its hard to decide to camouflage the kitchen because it is so beautiful"
The kitchen: Looks like a bunker
@@michaelhiltz7846 The whole place looks like crap lol Being Canadian I was just trying to be polite with my thoughts hahaha good thing i never said the kitchen was beautiful
Agree! Extremely disoriented, plus Encinitas is known for cliff erosion.
💯
The ocean side looks beautiful
bathtub really put me off, would not purchase no way.
i absolutely love that you made furniture adapting to the space instead of just installing ones in the market; they made them accordingly to the concept which just made it so unique.
Stunning--love the angles juxtaposed with the curves. HOWEVER, that tub in the primary gives me anxiety. I like to walk around while brushing my teeth, and I just know I would fall in 😂. Plus, it looks smallish?
I’d definitely fall in constantly and it is small.. looks like my cat would love to sleep in there though.
Absolutely. Very dangerous. It needs a glass railing or something. "Designed for an old person"? Who will trip and fall into the tub!
I would never buy property so close to a cliff that's obviously subject to erosion.
0:22 - Nope. Just look at it! Look at this cliff! The "Gate" and "Pool entrance" looks like a parking lot with some water. lol
Living on the edge
Yes, the erosion of the cliff is scary for sure... but I absolutely LOVE this house and the angles! I do see it as a work of art. So much detail and thought put into it - very unique property. 👍
Yeah, 23 million for a house that is going to be in the ocean AND I can hand my neighbors sugar through the window because they are so close? How did this monstrosity get approved to be built.
Must have happened years ago
the rubber stamper was blind.
Very cool house. “Feels” very small. I don’t know if it’s just the unique architecture or what
It’s the architecture and all the furniture, makes it feel cramped.

No to the fire pits
The angles of this house is making me break out in hives
A magnificent piece of art! Perfect for getaways and special occasions. I just can’t forgive it for not having a functionable beach.
It's also perfect when it falls into the ocean in a few years it will be a perfect getaway for fish
it will soon
THATS THE HOUSE IN WESTWORLD SEASON 3 EPISODE 1!!!
Incredible piece of architecture. That said, it favors form over function and makes some features less than optimal. For example, the funky angles on the dining room table means that people sitting at the acute angled corners are sharing the same leg space and banging knees. The pool is shaded by the sheer walls, and the sharp angles at the corners of the pool also make for difficult maintenance. One small slip in the tub of the Master Bathroom will send you to the ER for stitches. So many sharp edges begging to maim you. But of course I’m nit-picking. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I could. 😄
Also the height of the kitchen sinks is ridiculous.
For that money, there are many better houses.
I mean it’s beautiful but also apocalyptic and I’m here for it.
I lived in Encinitas near to where this place is (before it was there) for 35 yrs. every year there’s bluff erosion, there’s signs all along the beach along the bluffs warning not to be to close to bluffs due to erosion . I’d say at some point this place will be condemned due to bluff erosion. Maybe the owners know it’s coming and want to get their money before it’s not livable
I live in the area now that's is exactly what's is happening most of the houses on the ocean side of Neptune are condemned or under serious construction to keep from falling in the ocean
That’s an interesting ramp choice for an elderly couple! 🤔
My thoughts exactly.
I'm 67 and have been an excellent driver all my life, but I'd slam back and forth between the walls of that ramp. I'd only feel safe driving one of those bumper cars from the fair. Egad
LOL, the entire neighborhood is falling off that cliff..........RIP.
I just LOVE how the clip ends w/ a view over the cliff as the architect describes "hints of a future". Hint, hint buyers, full disclosure!
Best thing in the house. The French Bulldog picture on the wall
Haha he said the house appears to be moving .. No guy its about to fall into the ocean 🌊 😂
I watched this video a couple days ago and today just started season 3 of Westworld and noticed this is the house used for the beginning of episode 1. Pretty neat!
Look at that design! Two nubs were added by the bath so you can trip extra fast into the tub 🙌
Erosion Line is the new Lot Line
Iam amazed how did they allow people to build houses there...
23M gets you a 2 car garage 🤣🤣🤣
*The worst part about all this is that even if someone GAVE you this home for free you’d still have to cough up about $300,000 a year of property taxes for the rest of your life*
probably more since its a hungry thirsty blue state! The sand seems to be eroding right out from under it, like a sand castle
You'd be paying closer to $140K+ - which is still no joke - but anyone even seriously considering this obviously has no issue with that, and it's not as if property value is going to stagnate.
It is stunning! The cleaning aspect must be a real treat!
I don’t like the bathtub.
Geez with all these futuristic designs and furnishings, the future feels firmly in the grasp of the megarich....
I apreciate that the architect was invited to talk about the project.

Oh wow, this one is idyllic. Really loved this one!
Very cold
This house will be in the ocean in the next 20 years!
Wait a minute, did i just see so many houses at the oceanfront is in danger of being so close to the eroding cliff! ! I hope not.
Love how Wally (the architect) precisely articulates his unique vision throughout every detail of the home …and with so much passion!
The outdoor fireplace and crescent views is definitely an exquisite piece of art. 🌙 🔥
“532 Neptune Avenue”
Well done!
the word cozy doesnt really match this house does it? Its VERY cold and concrete. not a fan of that.
Woah. The thought into every detail is amazing
this house is really eye-catching but why would you make the pool and bathtub so small? also all the angles are kind of scary (lol) the firepits on the terrace are like something out of a mad max movie 😂
Livestream this home fall into ocean would be entertaining
Nice jailhouse on a corroding cliffside
I love seeing this house everytime i vacay out there. Its been 3 years since. Funny seeing this because Im actually going next weekend so ill be checkin it out!. Guess the algo knew i was going. Probably the coolest house to look at on the whole block ive seen. So glad i got to see the rest of it now
"This room is … where the television is…" 🤣
How do we know it won’t fall in the ocean? That cliff looks very eroded.
What a stunning house
Finally back with on the market, my fav content of yours! Keep it up!!!
The irregularly shaped table following the lines of the house makes so much sense...
Beautiful! The house manages to be nice while being very obnoxious (imo). Only one big question: when is it going to fall off the cliff??!! That's some serious erosion man! That fireplace isn't safe lol

Built on a cliff of sand, might want to check that foundation! Flossy, you don’t call a nice view a “money shot” you dope! That pool is not at all swimmable, so it’s just a water feature misplaced entirely. This guy for building a 23m house is surprisingly inarticulate.
Okay, this is just insane!!! Wow wow
This house looks like something from the Incredibles!!!
Tony Stark’s Mansion is real wtf ?!!
The garage sucks. Only two spots for cars.
Everyone involved in the built environment, whether you are an Architect, Engineer, Town Planner, policy maker etc. consider the following: every time we lay a slab or build a road we are taking up a physical footprint. That footprint at some point in time was an ecosystem for flora and fauna and now will be destroyed. Biodiversity is eroding at a rapid pace however we can slow this pace and perhaps stop it. So when talking to your clients, designing, building, planning, consider how can you do it to create space for the natural environment to thrive on that site or zone. It may mean elevating the building off the ground, it may mean creating connections between buildings above the ground. It may mean creating a pedestrian city, it may mean creating green spaces on a facade, it may mean creating a new zoning regulation that says yes, this is residential zone but also a zone for re-wilding, or where a zone can be commercial but with the restriction that the current ecosystem may not be disturbed. Nothing is impossible, clever solutions exist and you could help to create them. Please comment ideas and thoughts and solutions. Please also consider sharing this message whenever you see a good piece of architecture, technological solution, or process that could aid an equitable existence between humans and nature. Or when you see a terrible piece of architecture, technology or process. Speak up, and implement change, we can have a better future for ourselves, our children and nature.
This is the only house i've seen on this channel that I legitimately wouldn't want to live in
I bet Lady Gaga wrote her single, Edge of Glory, at this house. The house is literally there.
What was done to stabilize the cliff?
Most of those houses have the pylon footing in the bedrock.
Hopes and prayers.
The number aggressively sharp lines in this house, especially the tub, frightens me. I have visualized myself slipping and falling on the wet stairs way too many times in the short interval they were in that area.
I love the elevator and stair concept the most!
That cliff ? It be gone in 10 years.
I’m surprised they didn’t see it coming before they built the thing tbh…
This isn’t a house. This is a piece of art. Absolutely love it. It’s so iconic
