I was going to reply to you under my original comment but I think a lot of your followers will agree with me. I appreciate you so much for the time and energy you put into your instructional videos and taking the time to reply to people who comment. You have such a peaceful and soothing way of speaking, you teach in a way that finally allows me to "get it", and you make me feel confident that even if I'm not great right away, with practice I'll improve. Those things combined make you invaluable and keep us waiting for the next video. I think a lot of your followers are like me, and watch these videos multiple times learning something we may have missed before. Painting has helped me get past depression and anxiety, and boosted my overall confidence, so more than just a fun hobby. So, thank you...my life is better because of you and your videos. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same.
Thank you so much Johna. Not too many people realize how much time goes into the production of a simple video for our channel. We complicated cameras and editing software. Takes time but we love to do it, especially when we get amazing comments like yours. Makes it all worth the effort. Thank you so much!! 😊
@@janethowser3533 Isn't it amazing therapy? David has such a soothing voice and sweet nature, as does Bob Ross. Just a pleasure to follow along painting and soon you forget to be sad. Lol
I needed to understand exactly what Sfumato means and had to look up the correct spelling as well. I went to The Art Of Painting Birds Vol 1 and read over the definition again as I watched you paint. I see where you soften edges on the cardinal bringing your subject forward! A beautiful painting of the CARDINAL. Wow, so many cardinals all at once at your feeders must be great to see! One day, I looked out and saw alot of birds flying in every direction that landed in the cornfield in the backyard, when they left you could see the large green circle of grass where they landed and all of a sudden they flew away together! Snowing here today, hope it will continue for awhile! Never received my table or couch yet but have alot to do! Thank you for adding beauty to our world through your paintings! Have a nice day!
Thanks again David. I'm headed to my home in the mountains where I can e joy all these beautiful birds. I painted these Cardinals for my mom before she passed, she loved them so. They hold a special place in my heart. Can't wait to paint them again DJ style!😄
Thank you so much for your time and instruction. I'm working on a cardinal picture and have found your education helpful. I've watched many of your videos and found them useful. You are very inspirational. Thank you again.
First bird painting I have seen of yours. I really appreciated your thoughts and comments about the red, orange and yellow sequencing applications! A much appreciated video. Thank you, Dave
David, thank you very very much for your time and your kindness. I'm just learning how to paint during the pandemic, you are really an excellent teacher. Thanks again. You have a blessed day.
Thanks for this lesson on Cardinals. Unfortunately for me, I found out that I cannot paint cardinals. I did just what you said not to do - I started dark and went light. Now I'm excited to paint another cardinal the right way.
Your classes are just great. My tastes in paintings tend to run along the side of traditional, so I have got to say, the troller took my breath away. It is just beautiful! I hardly aspire to be that good but I actually do believe I could do the birds. Thanks for the inspiration you fold into each class.
Thank You for these videos, your voice is easy listening. I'm a beginner artist and i love your ease at painting, relaxed way! I do love your ghost flowers too!! Lol! I hope one day i can be like you!!! You a inspiration!
Thanks so much for your comment about color theory. I took it in college and so didn't think I needed it again. It's so true, one never stops learning. I'm placing an order soon for some Heritage paints and need to know what kind of sealer works for painted glass, and is it food safe? Thank you so much for your time. I really hope your wife can come home soon.
Thank you Janet. Yes we never stop learning and when I learn new techniques, I learn how to use color a little different. Basics don't change, but the "theories" do. That is why we can it color theory and not color facts. Thank you so very much! 😃
Hi David...this is my second painting with you ! The first was the chickadee which I love and now the cardinal. Thank you for your lessons and I appreciate what you do for us. 😊
Your stormy fishing boat looks like fun. Thank you for this video, besides color movement, what other things can you do for movement and can you have too much movement?
Yes you can have to much. All depends on the goal of the painting. Movement is something I believe gives a lot of interest. It is needed for the visual journey. Yes too much can distract and create chaos.
I am blown away by your versatility in your art because I only remember you as a decorative artist and you are just so much more, I can't believe I am only just seeing this, you are just brilliant ok best get back to the video can't have you glowing too much haha
The painting of the boat is fantastic. Your lessons are the greatest - I watch them over and over and love them. Your explanations are so helpful and encouraging. Thank you so much. Do you see your final painting in your mind's eye, or do you create the painting as you go?
Thank you very much! Larger paintings I make a plan and for the most part follow it. On smaller ones like this I paint the subject and then paint the flowers to accent and support the subject. Many times I don't know exactly until the subject is painted. This came after many years of practice and putting lots of flower types in my brain..LOL. 🙂
Mr. Jansen, first of all your contribution is much appreciated, I follow your work closely. A quick question if I may, the seascape scene at the beginning of this video is simply stunning, I'm curious to know ( if you don't mind sharing ) the colours you blended to obtain the striking colours of the sea ? ,,,, kind regards.
OMG Dave I am glad you mentioned the Utubes on your online page good god now I have to download them all to watch the ones with the birds that I haven' yet seen. My connection here is crappy so I have to download and watch when I please but man I am so excited and I just can't hide it no no no hahah Pointer Sisters and I can't comment on them as you know they are turned off.
I just discovered your channel. Your art style really inspiring sir. It encouraging me to practice more. I am looking forward to learned more about your work.
Brown Madder is a pure pigment that is very tricky to make. We use PR175 which is the traditional way. I would say you can get a close color with Napthol Red, Red Violet and Brunt Umber. It will not mix in other colors the same as PR175 though. One reason why we make it, difficult to get that color.
David when will the tuffed titmouse , hummingbird, and cardinal be on your online videos ? I liked being able to watch while I'm at the trailer. Thank you, I really miss watching you when I'm not at home with the internet, I watch you instead of TV, I can't get enough of your knowledge 💞 how amazing technology is to be able to paint with you with being so far away. I wish we had this many years ago .
Hi Janet, Jess has been working on them. They should be there now. The new one which is coming tonight will be on there in the morning. She was a little behind because she was moving.
haha yes!! just last night i spent an hour looking for a decent reference photo to paint and found nothing and BOOM TODAY this is here!!!!!!thank you so much!!!

Hi, We have students from all over the world including Germany on our website. Email me at JansenAS@aol.com and I will track down the trouble with you. Thanks.
They really do. It actually follows what Monet said leaving part of the painting to the imagination. Very important for the interest and visual journey.
Hello! What do you use to sketch with? I've used charcoal and most times I use burnt sienna. I haven't used pencil because I was told that the graphite could show thru the paint. I also have to be careful because if the sketch is too light I'm unable to see it.
Hi Spike! We will sketch or trace lightly with a pence. We have used umbers too. But if you are concerned pencil lines will show, use a bit of sandpaper to push the lines back. It is ok to wash a bit of background over the lines too. Don't use an eraser as it can leave a residue. We hope this helps. 😊

Very pretty painting of the red cardinal and thanks very much for your comments about color theory and that we should keep studying.
Thank you for the wonderful tutorials. I paint landscapes, but hopefully can try flowers soon.

Thanks for this lesson on Cardinals. Unfortunately for me, I found out that I cannot paint cardinals. I did just what you said not to do - I started dark and went light. Now I'm excited to paint another cardinal the right way.

Thank you Linda! 😃 Always like applying that visual pathway.
Love these bird paintings. You’ve inspired me. I have done two so far. The birds are not too bad but the flowers need work. But it is so much fun.
