I was a big fan of Governor Noem, but having political instincts is part of the job. After this book debacle and the way she handled, I’m questioning her instincts. To get defensive on interviews when they are asking about the dog makes me wonder what was she expecting? You write a book and you put things in it that are controversial to sell them, why is she shocked they are asking about them? Also, this is her 2nd book in 4 years and I wonder if she’s in politics for the $$$ or public service? You write a memoir about yourself after you leave politics.
Shooting a 14 month puppy in the head, saying you hated it. No move to re home the puppy or take it to a shelter. A hunting dog, according to experts and hunters, takes at least 4-5 years to develop into a real hunting dog. Some never do, but that’s when you consider other options. It says a lot about her character and how she handles problems. I want a leader who takes everything into consideration, before making a decision. Plus, why is she lying about meeting certain world leaders, when it can be easily be checked. Whether you want her as your Governor is your decision, but don’t inflict her on the rest of our troubled country.

No one has heard the saying there is only one thing to do with a egg sucking dog. she should have not put in book. most people who grew up or live the country this part of life of the farm.
As a South Dakotan, this is all of our opinions. We know stuff like this goes on in the rural parts of the state, but to put it in a book is so dumb.
The tough decision is to keep and raise an asshole dog or cat. That's what most people do. They eventually become a chill ,kickass part of the family . Just give it time
She should have realized what a hostile press would have done with that story. Biden could have done the same thing and it would been spun as a difficult and courageous act.

I read the book. The dog had already been a problem for its previous owner. It killed the neighbor's chickens, which are prized in rural world, and it tried to bite her too. I understand her decision. But in this case it's the way the story was told. It could have been framed differently. Interesting to me that in the story she kills a billy-goat right after the dog, and nobody in media seems to have a problem with the goat. Either that, or they're just repeating what they've heard and never read the book. I think she could have thought through a "worst case" scenario of what could happen if the media cherry picked details that made her look as awful as possible, which is what seems to have happened. Also, my Kindle copy of the book mentioned nothing of the author meeting the leader of North Korea. The closest she got to North Korea in my copy was visiting the demilitarized zone between North and South.
But the dog never lied about meeting the ruler of North Korea.

My german shepherd bit me, too; that's what dogs do. I didn't hysterically shoot my dog. Dogs do bite and educated people recognize that dogs are PREDATORS and biting is a significant behavior. I've been bitten by humans as well. Neither should be killed. Her choice of killing the dog and writing about it were poor behaviors. Her villainization is not for JUST killing the dog, but also for not being more reflective over the reality that perhaps her decision was not the best solution.
What do you think ranchers do when their ani.als & children are bit,& this was 20 years ago.

I honestly think the VP rarely matters. When was the last time a VP helps a candidate? 1960 with LBJ giving Texas to JFK? I honestly don’t think people care who is the VP anymore. Kamala Harris was Biden’s VP and I don’t think she helped him in 2020.

This story happened 20 years ago, it has been used against Noem before, in my opinion she is trying to get out ahead of it. You hired Tomi Lauren who worked for Noem after this incident. Back then she seemed to have no problem with it because it furthered her in politics. Now she like you seem to be clutching your pearls, oh the horror. Let's see if you had a dog killing livestock and attacking people. A dog that was given to you to train because it had problems. That couldn't happen seems the dog was untrainable, if you found a coyote puppy in your hen house killing your chickens what would you do, would you pet it take it inside your home, of course not you would put that varmint down. Kristi Noem is a little tone deaf. Her bragging about killing a baby dog is something that resonates with many outdoorsman types in the Dakotas. But she has to be smart enough to know that most of the rest of the country will react differently to that kind of anecdote. She'll do well as the governor of South Dakota, but she doesn't belong in the White House as a VP or cabinet member.

Noem also has some negative circumstances regarding her marriage. That news, combined with the dog story detracts me from supporting her for VP.

I love dogs and think they make life better. That being said, anyone that has a problem with the story itself is naive. The problem is she choose to use the story for whatever reason except for maybe try to get hired as a farm hand.
As multiple pet owner of cats and dogs, Id still vote for Noem over any other candidate outside of DeSantis who I still stand should be VP, then takes over for another 8 years as President.
This really comes down to holding 1 bad decision against her that 100% every candidate has made themselves. This shows story shows the exact opposite of good leadership. As the dogs owner SHE is responsible to make sure it is properly trained before letting be around other animals. A dog that was born with a hunting instinct. I’m pretty sure as a rancher she would have known that. Instead of doing the right thing and paying for the training or giving it to someone who could handle it she shot it! Great leader… blame those underneath you for shortcomings, then just get of them so you can save face. You don’t have to be a “dog person” to recognize her horrible judgement.
