Defrosting GE Profile Refrigerator's Coils

- We had a problem with our refrigerator not shutting off. Temps in the refrigerator were too warm but the bottom freezer was way too cold and turned ice cream into a solid brick.
Advice on the internet suggested a broken thermostat causing too much ice on the evaporator coils. They said to open the back up and thaw them out with a hair dryer but on this unit, the coils are buried in the middle below the crisper drawers. Here is a video that shows how to gain access to them.
Note: The repairman already removed the single small screw in front of the drawers so you'll need to do that too.
Thawing out the evaporator coils made the refrigerator run normally for several days until a replacement thermostat could be delivered. Ice would gradually form on the coils again until the repair was made but this temporary fix kept our food from spoiling.
When in doubt, call a professional.
Thank god for this video, I couldn’t not find any video about these profile units. A little different and thanks for the help.
Thanks for video, very helpful as i had no idea how to get to the coil/fan location.
I couldn't find it either but made this video after the repair guy showed us where the coils were. Figured someone would be helped by this.
Where is the defrost thermostat? I order mine but cant see it!
Not sure. The repairman we hired handled that.
i found mine was that piece of metal on the Styrofoam was getting sucked down and blocking air flow. i tape it up better and trying again
and how do you get the bottom plate off in the refrigerator? Yours looked so easy
Figured it out
Scott van Ruin how did you do it? I’m having the same problem.
Do you have video of you replacing thermostat?
No, sorry. The repairman made the replacement.
what ease the problem ?
Broken thermostat which needed to be replaced.
No electric defrost?
There is electric defrost.
@@vadimzorin7804 yeah I see that now on the one I'm working on, just wondering why his needed defrosting now? If it's burnt out his fix would not have lasted long
Scott van Ruin I think it is just faster to defrost it this way :) it was helpful for me to see how to get access to the fan as in most fridges it is behind back wall but this fridge is different
@@scottvanruin6481 The repair guy told us to defrost the coils to save our food. He had to order a new thermostat but it wouldn't arrive until a couple of days later. Defrosting will buy you a few days of cold temps in the fridge before ice forms on the coils again. In theory, you could just keep defrosting with the hair dryer every couple of days to keep the proper refrigerator temps.
