This fight is so iconic because it's one of the rare times where the fight was dead even. The key difference was that 17 had infinite stamina, so Piccolo didn't have the luxury of a battle of atrition. It kept me on my toes as a kid.
True but Piccolo was a much more skilled fighter, so that helped even the scales, honestly could have gone either way if Cell didn’t show up. Wish we got more dead even fights
@@litpotat5601 it wasn’t because Picollo stood literally no chance. Being equal to an android means you stand absolutely no chance. They can go forever. Picollo could only go for so long. He was guaranteed to lose this
I personally love this fight because it's like it shows how each character is starting off strong and getting more desperate and angry too. Starting off with elaborate attacks and blows, energy blast, good blocks, the works. Then towards the end, they just start gut checking each other over and over, like they are too tired for their usual martial arts and just resort to body blows, and can't even be bothered to defend, they just HOPE the other guy will go down, it's great.
Although in 17’s case, he’s not “tired,” he’s genuinely starting to feel checkmated. Like “damn, Big Green wasn’t lying when he said he can just eat my hits? How do I keep this big Namek down??”
On that point about showing a characters identity through how they fought, one thing I noticed as a kid was how rage-filled Tien's fighting style was when he was first introduced pause on a frame of him punching and he's always tweaking looking like he genuinely wants to break the person he's fighting against. Well, I guess Yamcha was actually broken lmao
One reason why the airport fight from Civil War was so good is because you have a dozen heroes fighting with their own style and character. Even the brawlers (Cap, Bucky, T’Chala) all fight differently.
Yeah, now it's reserved for the movies and key Super characters. Beerus Whis and Broly have very unique fighting styles compared to the more run of the mill now ki based styles. Hit as well was a breath of fresh air, which is why he's a fan favorite. "This is the stance" being so iconic to this day. But Super did pick up on how boring the fights were getting. It's why Trunks uses his sword rather than just generic fists and blasts like everyone else. It's a full part of his fighting style now rather than him beating 1 guy with a sword and never using one again cause it broke. Gohan not really knowing how to fight and using wrestling moves helped a lot in Super Hero. He never trains and isn't a martial artist. So, it wouldn't make sense for him to fight like a martial artist.
From Dragonball to early Dragonball Z Yamcha, always kept the same fighting style especially from his tournament match with Tien, that Wolf Fang Fist was his most broken/op move and style in the series.
I swear to God this gotta be the most underrated fight in all the dbz series. The way my boi Piccolo and 17 were throwing hands were crazy especially the gut punches until cells noisy camping ass decided to third party
I'm now imagining Gohan's fighting style being like some sort of speed chess. He'd be very methodical, always thinking 3 moves ahead, and he'd try to end the fight as quickly and painlessly as possible.
I agree with you 100%. If they ever reboot DB-DBZ, they need to pay special attention to fighting style/combat movements. They could say so much through that with out having to write a line of dialogue. Plus I am a sucker for seeing examples of master/trainer lineage, like the brief moment where Future Trunks and Gohan use Masenko in the DBZ Broly movie, a technique made by Piccolo. Shit like that. You describing the idea that Gohan’s fighting style should be Piccolo’s demon style as a foundation, later refined by Goku’s traditional martial arts, accentuated by Gohan’s intelligence. That shit would be so cool to see fleshed out.
One of Piccolo's best fights for real. Shame that its his last big fight until years later in Super, but least Big Green is still a real homie in the Buu arc.
I haven't seen all of Dragon Ball, but what you said about fighting styles being unique to each character as a result of their formal training and personal development is absolutely what I think Dragon Ball as a series needed. Sorry if this is a long comment but what you said is ABSOLUTELY vital. I think it all goes back to the introduction of power levels. Raditz's number was bigger than Goku and Piccolo's despite their training and unique skillsets, so it took clever tactics to defeat him. I feel like once power levels were introduced, the idea that your strength isn't about your skillset or training, but is a statistic that can be accurately measured, the idea of martial arts became less and less important over time. Here is how I think that could've been avoided while adding to the series' martial arts themes. Power levels are measured by the Frieza Force, and are a manifestation of the caste system enforced by Frieza and his underlings like the Saiyans. Low-born warriors like Raditz and Kakarot are viewed as weak because their numbers are lower at birth. Kakarot's power level was far below Raditz', but as he grew, he got stronger, and his power level increased. I think that power levels should have been a way to show the Frieza Force was obsessed with pure brute ability, and not technique, and by the end, it should have been established that ultimately, power levels are false. What if Frieza's race developed the power level system as a way to decrease the likelihood of anyone trying to rise above their station? Like, Goku was a low-level warrior who through skill eventually became strong enough to defeat Frieza. I always thought power levels didn't really matter, but when you see things like Frieza having 120,000,000 versus like, Tien, you think that gap could almost never be bridged because it's not about Tien versus Frieza's combat experience or knowledge of martial arts, it's just that Frieza has the bigger number. Obviously Saiyan-saga Tien versus Frieza max power is an absurd comparison, but I feel like an extreme example helps show how power levels made strength less about your knowledge and more about who is "stronger" because their number is bigger. And later it gets absurd, like what's Golden Frieza's power level? The scale is poorly-defined so you see people in the versus community struggling to place any label on Goku's newest Hyper-Super-Ultra Omega Instinct Saiyan God 5 form or whatever he unlocks. Transformations and absorption didn't help, either. Piccolo becomes strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Frieza because he absorbs Nail and just "becomes stronger." But what does that mean, really? Did he get some special insight into Nail's techniques or some fighting style that would catch Frieza off-guard? When a Saiyan gets a zenkai boost, HOW do they get "stronger?" Why is oozaru "ten times stronger" than a normal Saiyan? I think by making people "stronger" based on transformations and numbers, it really devalued all the martial arts training and that's why Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu and all the rest got left behind. I think the reason the earthlings never really caught up was because power levels and the zenkai boost and Super Saiyan negated the martial arts aspect in favor of "number go up." It's been a while since I've actually seen the original show so I'm sorry if I get stuff wrong. I just feel like they should have focused more on how martial arts and developing unique techniques are what decides victory in combat, and not that one person is just definitively "stronger."

I love the series, but the power creep definitely seemed to push toriyama into a writing corner that he wasn't entirely sure how to get himself out of without continuously upping the stakes. And when this is how you compensate, it has absolutely no choice but to lead you into some absolute goofiness and making half your cast useless unless you HARD pivot
I totally agree. Ironically, the only human to remain relevant to any degree has been Krillin....and I'd say it's because of his unique techniques. Solar Flare and Destructo-Disc are still affecting battles. Sadly, he's the only human z-fighter that's been able to remain relevant at all. He even played a (very limited) role in the battle against Super Cell in Dragon Ball Super Hero. I wish they did this the other human z-fighters.
17 and 18 are actually probably the best example of characters traits and background playing into how they fight. Their infinite energy really shows itself, especially in Super. They’re steady expanding energy in ways other fighters just wouldn’t in a close match. And they’re always more competent when fighting alongside one another. 17 gets another point when he fights because, at least in the tournament of Power he fights like a Wolf hunting when he has the advantage against those animal styled fighters early in the ToP
Btw the unique fighting styles is the biggest reason why I love Baki so much. Itagaki is so good in portraying a fighters background and personality through just one image. Its like u show me one punch from a fighter in Baki or describe it and i can tell u who that guy was. Series is rly slept on as a goofy shonen when it has so much great art and the best fights in the business.
I totally agree with you on the fight choreo thing. A part of me lements all the storytelling opportunities are missed when a creator chooses to depict fighting in such a general way. Especially in something like Dragon Ball which is so deeply entrenched in the martial arts
Piccolos fusion with Kami was hyped up SO MUCH it's really a shame he was only on par with one of the androids. If they had ganged up on him and he were able to hold his ground against both of them or if Cell hadn't disposed of him as easily (or after he absorbed 17) it would have had a lot more weight I think.
4:45 the Makosen (Demon Force Wave) was a move that King Piccolo used back in the DB era against kid Goku. Rarely used and easliy eclipsed by the Masenko (Demon Flash of light) as they are so similar in name and use that even the wiki has them mistaken as the same move.
I get it now. This fight is why 17 started and kept training. Man had PTSD and was never gonna give piccolo the chance to get stronger than him again 😂
Your tangent about fighting style not reflecting the characters as the series progressed was serious food for thought. I always felt like at beginning of DBZ and the early movies, Piccolos deadliness as a fighter was more expressed, like even if you were on par in strength with him, you can't afford to take 1 or 2 good hits from him. Although I like the 17 vs Piccolo fight, you get anything but that feeling on display.
Plus Piccolo has a wide arrange of moves from DB and is shown a bit in the movies, that fights with him should always standout with all the crazy things he can do.
The whole big green thing had me rollin but when ya put the dub of lil Gohan saying it's big green i was weak as hell😂 I thank you for this awsome content, stay up my dude
As you said man this fight had no reason going this hard and yet it did.piccolo getting some time to shine is always a W. Keep up the goated vids man 💪🏾. Looking forward to cell interrupting the ones next fight 😂😭
This is one of my favorite scraps in Z, so I’m geeked to see you cover it! When a certain cicada (with greater sucking skills than Ms.Reed) pulls up, things get really dire for the cast!
I dug how you nerded out on the movements, approach and techniques of Gohan and Goten. It's something I've pointed out with some of my DBZ homies; something we all agreed on. While DBZ changed the playing field, a good portion of Martial Arts styles were shown through them, and even in some cases, Goku. A very nice nod to Dragon Ball, which I enjoy a lot.
Honestly that is one of my favorite fights in the series too. It's like they combined the strategy and skill of og db with the wild powers and dramatics of dbz. How u see their feet and fists through the other when they hit is just the best.
Those back and forth guy punches remind me of the scene in Bloodsport where Van Damme fights the dude Paco to a standstill until he decides to one for one exchange kicks until he chops the dude down.
i wish piccolo kept that bright blue aura he had during this fight, it was sick as hell and helped sell the idea that he's not you're granddad's piccolo anymore.
Also, I see you left out the weird part where 17 fired off that weird bubble blast underwater at piccolo. Seriously, out of all the attacks I've seen in this show, that was one of the most out of pocket things I've ever seen. It's like 17 got so mad, he screamed like a little boy and turned it into an attack. When I first saw it, I was like "huh? He can just do that?"
Big fax on the whole perspective of character identity with fighting. As the series progressed it really came down to the element of who was the more overall talented fighter. Elements of experience and fighting styles got b left by the way side since it didn’t matter if one guy didn’t have the strength or speed somewhere within the range of the other guy . Some of those elements Kind of came back towards the end with Goku vs Uub. Hopefully it continues to show in the newer series.
When Me and my cousin were kids we used to think Hellzone Grenade was the most badass attack just cause it had a curse word in it lmao and Grandma wouldn't let us say it
I watch to laugh but dam.. you have perfectly explained how much of a shift DB to DBZ was.. not only the martial arts difference but DB was an adventure manga. The shift to focus on fighting took some of the charm. No one has a unique style of fighting, just a few special techniques. Keep up the awesome work bro!
Another kick ass fight in the Dragon Ball serie is the one of Goku vs Piccolo in Dragon Ball. Oh man, there you can see Goku’s brilliance as a martial artist, where he (*spoiler alert*) does a Kamehameha with his feet (*spoiler ends*). Truly worth rewatching it.
I absolutely agree bro like, think about future trunks learning combat from future gohan, a mix of demon clan style and because goku dies in that timeline, by the time he comes back from our time line having trained in vegetas crazy space boxing 😂 i would definitely agree a bit of a missed opportunity, but hey still holds up till this day as a good ass show!
I fully agree with your nerding out on martial arts section...and now I'm sad lol. Because we both know they'll never do shit with martial arts again in the dragonball series.
It took me this year as a 33y/o to realize that the reason why the cyborgs haven’t gone euthanasia on the world is because of android 16 being by their side
That ain't the only reason though. Cell traveled into the main timeline a whole year before Future Trunks did, and his arrival caused some butterfly effects/time discrepancies. That's why Mecha Frieza & King Cold arrived on Earth like 3 hours earlier than they were supposed to. In the original timeline, Goku arrives on Earth at around the same time as they do and he kills them. But then there's also the fact that Future Trunks arrived too and gave Goku medicine to live through the heart virus _and_ alerted them all about the androids several years before they were set to arrive so they can train for it instead of the android attack catching them all by surpise during a period of peace and being immediately killed off. I believe it was said that Dr Gero even programed them differently in the main timeline or something like that, likely due to all the changes that happened that would have affected Dr. Gero's plans in some way; it's even sorta implied that Dr. Gero never turned himself into an android in the future and never made Android 19.
These fellas be puttin in work. Low key kamicolo is lucky they didn’t 3rd and 4th party him tho. Let’s not even talk about that 5th party - he got no chill.
This is my favorite fight of the entire series. The choreography on display is like the perfect blend of the variety in Dragon Ball with the pace and heat of Z. 100% agreed on the stance rant. That shit had me rolling in agreement. It's weird though because if anything Super and the video games like Tenkaichi 3 does a better job at conveying that uniqueness between characters with Vegeta having direct harsh strikes with Goku being almost cloth like with his fluidity for example.
great video, i wish u talked about that scene in the anime where they was punching echother back in forth in the gut.. that wuz the grittyest fight you felt both hits.
You actually touched on the one thing I would change in the series: Instead of making it a martial arts series, make it a series *about* martial arts. It would be interesting to see Krillin use Shaolin Style as well as characters being valued more for their representation rather than their power level.
This is forever be hands down my favorite DBZ fight in the entire series...sweet, short and no wasting time directly to the POINT, also the best choreography from any DBZ of GT or Super fight, not going to say the OG Dragon Ball as I still think in terms of fight choreography the OG DB is the best, but this one is the closest to that period of time....I love DBZ and all but what you said in that rant is sooo true, I wish they would have bring it in some sort or martial art consultant so they could made better and more unique fighting styles for each character, something like Avatar The Last airbender and Legend of Korra did fantastically well, have each character have a specific fighting style that was unique for them, but still overall DBZ have good fights and this one for me take the cake in term of just good fight choreography, plus is my boy Piccolo who sadly after this will take like 20 years to return to form and have to be in a film for that to happen.
Completely agree about individual attributes being lost as the series continues. Soon, it's just one brawl after another with very little identity compared to the early Dragon Ball tournaments.
That speech on the lack of technique variety, and overall lack of variety in fights in the series was so on point, cuz its completely true. Outside of a few exceptions, most characters movesets are throwing hands, and a bunch of different colored energy blasts that all do the same thing. Is there really a functional difference between a Kamehameha and a Final Flash? Most of the more unique stuff, like the Kienzan or Yamcha's Spirit Ball is limited to side characters we rarely ever see fight. Piccolo has the really fuckin cool Makankosappo, but only uses it once in all of Z despite it being so iconic and a unique move. Compare Z to something like Naruto, where different techniques and fighting styles can make a lot of difference. Just to pull a fight out of my ass, look at Tsunade vs Kabuto. By his own admission, all it would take is one good punch from Tsunade to put Kabuto in a flatline. However, Kabuto was able to get around that by using his chakra scalpels, meaning he could do intetnal damage to the much stronger Tsunade just by touching her with light taps. So rather than trying to box it up and get put in a box, he focused almost completely on avoiding Tsunades fists, and touched wherever he could to do internal damage, cutting her muscles and ligament to gradually weaken and slow her down. Something you'd absolutely never see in DragonBall. Better example, just look at how different people fight in Hunter x Hunter. Gon, Killua, and Kurapika all fight completely differently, with entirely different moves and fighting styles. All the Phantom Troupe members are mostly completely different as well. Uvogin fights nothing like Machi, and Machi is nothing like Kalluto.
I get whatcbu mean ab the fighting style stuff but thats why i appreciate channels like @Phangito who breakdown the fights to show how intricate they can be fr
That point about the way these dawgs bark different and bite the same is straight facts. I've always found it annoying and unengaging to watch people who've trained in martial arts for decades fighting with the same level of skill as an 8 year old who got a little over a year's worth of practice in. Cell of all people was the most infuriating for me, he could've had so many different styles tactics and strategies but instead he just punches and kicks just the same as colonel sanders lookin ass woula. Tons of different factors in real fights are completely ignored too. Things like height, weight, reach, hair, prior injuries, etc, they're either completely ignored/forgotten about, or mentioned at the start and then treated the same as just a slight setback that matters for only the first 3-second clash. If we could see more real martial arts coming back to the series, it would honestly get me back into db big time, cause right now, i like shows that mention the actual martial arts and sciences/histories behind them (like kengan ashura) way more.

Bruce Faulconer dialed it up with that Piccolo vs. 17 theme during tbe fight. That is Kami-tier adrenaline rush music.
While this is true, it was actually a Mike Smith thing.
Forreal. That Falcouner score went crazy
The absolute best piccolo fight ever
4:45 the Makosen (Demon Force Wave) was a move that King Piccolo used back in the DB era against kid Goku. Rarely used and easliy eclipsed by the Masenko (Demon Flash of light) as they are so similar in name and use that even the wiki has them mistaken as the same move.
When piccolo said its clobberin time and clobbered everywhere. Gotta say top 10 anime fights
12:30 😂😂 forearms made of hand grenades lol! ❤ Yea this fight is earth shattering fr.
I get it now. This fight is why 17 started and kept training. Man had PTSD and was never gonna give piccolo the chance to get stronger than him again 😂
Bro your fighting style reflection hit my soul.
17 and Big Green both had a 50/50 chance of winning, until you add Kurt Angle to the mix 😂
What the hell's a Kami?
It means God. Now bow.
Such a raw scene
Your tangent about fighting style not reflecting the characters as the series progressed was serious food for thought. I always felt like at beginning of DBZ and the early movies, Piccolos deadliness as a fighter was more expressed, like even if you were on par in strength with him, you can't afford to take 1 or 2 good hits from him. Although I like the 17 vs Piccolo fight, you get anything but that feeling on display.
Plus Piccolo has a wide arrange of moves from DB and is shown a bit in the movies, that fights with him should always standout with all the crazy things he can do.
He was much more tactical early in the series looking for the opponents weak point or a mistake they made to exploit
I can't wait for you to cover the majin vegeta goku fight, the choreography during it in the later rounds were incredible.
Your word play be having me on the floor 😂😂😂
TALK TO EM!!!
Pause on the sucking skills bro lol
I dug how you nerded out on the movements, approach and techniques of Gohan and Goten. It's something I've pointed out with some of my DBZ homies; something we all agreed on. While DBZ changed the playing field, a good portion of Martial Arts styles were shown through them, and even in some cases, Goku. A very nice nod to Dragon Ball, which I enjoy a lot.
Crazy how much shit went down while goku was dealing with his high cholesterol
😭😭
Man needed to keep his cheerios on deck
Honestly that is one of my favorite fights in the series too. It's like they combined the strategy and skill of og db with the wild powers and dramatics of dbz. How u see their feet and fists through the other when they hit is just the best.
I loved how even this fight was.
Dude you're getting soo good at this 😂😂😂
Absolutely juiced for this fight easily my favorite Dragon Ball moment watching Piccolo 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Man finally got some respect put on his name!!!
Those back and forth guy punches remind me of the scene in Bloodsport where Van Damme fights the dude Paco to a standstill until he decides to one for one exchange kicks until he chops the dude down.
Perfect for my after Church routine, can't wait to hear all about the big green recycling last seasons boy toy
Only to then get a big load deposited inside of him by a giant cicada...
Boy toy is crazy but facts 17 is auto
Piccolo flipping that many times reminded me of coming to America, he just needed a rat tail 😅
Piccolo giving android 17 those green hands 😆😆😆😆😆
“Possessed by the ghost of Vegeta” 🤣🤣🤣👌🏾
Piccolo vs 17 is definitely a top 10 DBZ fight if all time, very slept on too 😴💯
Yeah it’s a great video
Bro I couldn’t agree more with what you said about Goten and how this series could be way more legendary
4:43 Makosen is basically the beta Masenko. Demon King Piccolo used it a few times, and so did Majunior in the manga.
i wish piccolo kept that bright blue aura he had during this fight, it was sick as hell and helped sell the idea that he's not you're granddad's piccolo anymore.
I love these videos man. Thanks for the great nostalgic content
I look forward to these, thanks playboy
Big fax on the whole perspective of character identity with fighting. As the series progressed it really came down to the element of who was the more overall talented fighter. Elements of experience and fighting styles got b left by the way side since it didn’t matter if one guy didn’t have the strength or speed somewhere within the range of the other guy . Some of those elements Kind of came back towards the end with Goku vs Uub. Hopefully it continues to show in the newer series.
When Me and my cousin were kids we used to think Hellzone Grenade was the most badass attack just cause it had a curse word in it lmao and Grandma wouldn't let us say it
This by far is one of the top best fights in the series
I can't watch this scene without hearing the Can Can in the back of my head. Thanks early 2000s internet.
UPS fade got me dead asf. Buddy is a genius
Keep doing what you are doing, sir! I look forward to these every week!
Your mini rant is how I feel dude
Cell posting up like a dead beat dad whose kids just drafted to the pros.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you again for another banger! you're making me just wanna watch Android 17 vs. Piccolo from the scratch again 😅
This vid cought me off guard, because I winced at one of the jokes in the worst way possible
Truth, they coulda definitely ruined this man's day if they decided to run the gang squad protocol
Due to TFS portrayal of Dende, I was very confused for a second when you called Cell "lil green." Lol
Such a sick ass fight!
Yo you always cooking Krillin 🤣🤣🤣
It only gets worse when the remote comes up 😂
@@KJMProductions92love this page!!!!!
This fight was like watching a great Intercontinental Championship match, lol
Piccolo V 17 was a great as hell fight man we need that rematch animated
great video, i wish u talked about that scene in the anime where they was punching echother back in forth in the gut.. that wuz the grittyest fight you felt both hits.
I did at the end man!
my falt u did talk about it.. guess that why i should not comment befor the video ends lol
You actually touched on the one thing I would change in the series: Instead of making it a martial arts series, make it a series *about* martial arts. It would be interesting to see Krillin use Shaolin Style as well as characters being valued more for their representation rather than their power level.
Another banger i listen to these while driving now so I can laugh 🤣🔥🔥
One of my favorite fights which they ran it back❤
Next to the Goku Cell fight, this one was def one of the most 🔥 match ups in DBZ History.
“Pure, unfiltered testosterone” 😂😂
This fight was one of my favorites in DBZ, they really beat the balls off the other.
On point about Gohan potential. Gohan really was supposed to be the one
RNS one of the best fight in dbz hands down Uncle Pic gotta shine for a bit
Your rant is SPOT ON. That'd be the dream tho 😭
Hyrule 13s had me rolling, some of your quips are kami tier
I like how you had 17 hanging out with SpongeBob SquarePants
Completely agree about individual attributes being lost as the series continues. Soon, it's just one brawl after another with very little identity compared to the early Dragon Ball tournaments.
It's Piccolo best fight of the series. I hope now that Piccolo has his new Orange Transformation that Piccolo can get a few more fights like this.
I hope so too, man deserves better than getting sidelined for the remainder of the series
Shoutout to Big Green
I get whatcbu mean ab the fighting style stuff but thats why i appreciate channels like @Phangito who breakdown the fights to show how intricate they can be fr
7:23 The trash stand that you talking about is actually a real Martial Arts stand and is dangerous. I saw it in a Martial Arts Documentary
“I’M DIRTY DAN!!”
“NO I’M DIRTY DAN”
“NO I’M DIRTY DAN”
