Today on Pure Science, we explore how Christopher Nolan is whitewashing movies, and this is totally objective scientific fact and not opinionated and influenced by personal ideology.

A timely and interesting article, reviewing art and science at the same time. And you always articulate and present it well.
A couple of comments. There may have been intelligence reports that Japan was thinking of surrendering, but on ground it did not do so. Even after the first bomb was dropped and they could see the destruction, they did not surrender. So the facts on the ground appear to be that Japan was not going to surrender. Secondly, I have driven through the Los Alamos, New Mexico area many times. The whole area for hundreds of miles is dry and deserted. Nothing grows, barely any water or useful vegetation. When it barely has people today, I am not sure what was the impacted population back then. This is not to condone US Government’s actions toward its own (Native American) citizens, but times were different and empathy for people and value for life was quite low across the world. This was WW-II period with 75M casualties.

Again, The Print & Sandhya R brings out a timely report on the Atomic experiment. Brought out the human interest elements, but would have been great if the specs of the Las Alamos bomb and the difference it had with the Fat Boy, were also informed, then it would have completed the basics. BTAIM, it was nice opinion, and a great perspective. Lets denuclearize our world.
Hope this coming movie re-triggers that debate.

Nice! I like the way she has connected the dots!!! I am pretty sure after 75 to 80 years later, someone in posterity will create a biopic on Nolan, saying how he led the epitome of art of whitewashing the fact through movies!!

Great work Sandhya, please add the written piece on the website as well. Sci-tech section on the webpage does not have pure science accessible I think. Although boring compared to videos, having written articles is extremely helpful for references and such to works in the future. (Think editing wiki page on Nolan as a starter)
Also it'll live up to the name 'The print' :D! Itll also help liven up that scitech page(do apologise if its somewhere else not on that page)

This movie is only based on that book. Even after the Trinity test by Oppenheimer, Edward Teller later on conducted the hydrogen bomb test.
Just imagine what would have happened if the Nazis had built the bomb first. Some articles say that German scientist Heisenberg almost developed the bomb, but he delayed it by giving inaccurate data so that the Nazis would not have a bomb.

there are few gaps in this video.
    1) someone would have developed nuclear weapon given the progress in science by 1939, just like someone would develop quantum computer, AI etc. question is, who would you have rather develop it ? China or Russia or US. I think answer is clear even from an Indian perspective. Just image China developing Quantum Computer first and using such a disruptive technology to settle geo-political issues with India or South China sea.
    2) Japan would NOT have surrendered (well, if they wanted, they could have done so right after Hitler's death in April). Choice for Allied forces were, how to quickly to end the war. Weather to directly attack risking many deaths or use the new weapon. Of course, I think dropping second weapon was completely un-necessary. Finally, Japan was rebuilt with Western alliance and is a treaty bound ally of US
    3) you skipped how New Mexico became part of US etc. and how western part was settled. I think US government failed to take of the local population and that is a complete let down by government.

Not sure if this video were to be part of the 'science' section, especially after the recent video on this very channel about poor science communication in India. That natives were evacuated, then not provided protective gear is good and even important information but should have been in addition to the science of the bomb. Especially off the topic was the long note on Bhagavad Gita. Sorry to be harsh, but needless Brahminical whine 'hai mera scripture mistranslate kar diya'. What all do you expect from Americans? Win the war, split the atom and then get the translation right?

I am prepared to be corrected but your assertion that the Japanese were ready to surrender is plain wrong. At best, there were a few officers of the ruling council, very much in minority, who were prepared to send out feelers to negotiate. The Japanese had demonstrated their resolve to fight till the last man throughout the war. I am not suggesting that i can say for sure that the bombings were justified, but wanted to clarify an important fact.

this is a pretty bad take Sandya, for one, while its true that America knew Germans were no where close to developing an atomic bomb, people judge Americas decision for atomic bomb on Japan with huge hindsight. The precursor to atomic bomb on japan was brutal invasion of Saipan and Iwo jima, where the Japanese just made suicide charges instead of surrendering. Do not forget that the Japanese army on Saipan convinced the 64 civilian population that death would be better than suicide, all 64 of them jumped into the ocean. To this day, that cliff is called suicide cliff. There was also intelligence that japan was preparing to launch biological warfare on American west coast and much more. If you consider all these factors, even the in the best case the intention of Japanese would not be clear. They would have rather let the entire population of japan die than to surrender, that is the bushido code they followed.
Why was the need to drop 2 atomic bombs? if the intention of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima was to show off the Soviet union, why drop another in Nagasaki? One would have been enough of a deterrent right ? think about that when you get chance.

Did you hear her? "Hypersexualized doll and hyper-glorified scientists" Oppenheimer was a genius, like it or not. A lot of physicists contributed to this including S Chandrasekhar. While there's a lot of controversy including Einstein's letter, there's no reason to slander them with a deliberate co-reference to slapstick Barbie.
There's considerable complex history and controversy about the bomb.
It's ok to criticize Nolan's whitewashing, but there's hardly any to slander scientists like Oppenheimer.
By the way, even she doesn't confess Oppenheimer suffered some persecution. History is complex, when people do this in the name of journalism, it gives away the fact that in India science journalism is very ordinary, to put it mildly.

I have been so disappointed seeing no-one is talking about misquoting Geeta. Nolan’s white washing and ignoring the plights of Indians is sad. Although the movie mentions about Indians moving at the site after manhattan project is scrapped, it completely ignores their travesty

In Interstellar, the first scene shows an Indian drone praising Indian achievements. In the Dunkirk movie, there is a scene where a British captain says that they will risk anything and rescue everyone including French, African, and others. He does not misquote anything from the Gita; he simply adapted the screenplay from the pultzier award winning book. Oppenheimer is the one who misquoted it.
