The etching is taken from Gustave Doré's 1868 engravings of Dante's Paradiso, the third canticle of The Divine Comedy. The one where Ed comments on the etching is Doré's engraving for Paradiso Canto V. And the one on the last page is from Doré's 1885 engravings of Milton's Paradise Lost.

You've got to keep reading ... if only to get to the sweet Doctor Strange guest shot.
There's a DVD version of this miniseries, as well...with full voice-acting and limited animation.
Released by "Digital Comic Books", it played on any device that could run dvds: ps2, Xbox, Mac, pc, dvd...etc.

I feel like Queasada never stuck out long enough as an artist to get that one big signature project. His art was so good and seemed to be evolving towards something, but then kinda sailed into other things. Can't blame him cause drawing comics is a miserable nightmare. About this specific project - it's hard not to immediately nope out after seeing the amont of world balloons. It's not that you don't wanna read, but it looks like noise on top of Joe's awesome art. Still an iconic collaboration in comics history.

I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that this is definitely a comic book with Daredevil in it.

this came out in '98 a few years before the "writing for the trade" craze really kicked in with the arrival of Bendis and Millar at Marvel.

Mysterio pops up at the ends, reveals he's dying from cancer. And the whole arc has been a massive ruse by him to drive Matt crazy into believing the kids is the devil, because this whole thing was a Mysterio's last performance before he dies (he had some excuse for Daredevil and not Spidey but it doesn't matter). I think Mysterio accidentally kills himself, I forgot (doesn't matter he better later on).
The whole thing is a wild ride of Matt going crazy and nearly killing the baby several times, also he's ex-girlfriend Karen Page coming back after a drug trip gets then killed by Bullseye.
After the whole thing wraps up it's revealed the baby has a connection to Stick which would have been further explored in Daredevil / Bullseye: The Target but Kevin Smith never finished it so the kid is just out there somewhere.
Interestingly enough the baby was in Daredevil: Ninja (Art is questionable, words is okay) mini-series written by Bendis before he did his run on Daredevil. Clearly there was a big plan here or something down the line, but once Bendis takes over the only thing that mattered is that Karen died which pushes Matt down a darker path.
And there's was funny sub-plot of Foggy Nelson losing his wife and his mother's law firm which also only mattered in where Matt works in the Bendis run it never really comes up again there.

I haven’t read it recently but this series was my first comic I started buying as an adult. There was a few years where I wasn’t interested in comics but the art and story spoke to me

Common misconception here: the Immaculate Conception refers to *Mary* being conceived without sin (but otherwise via completely standard biological means) and the Virgin Birth is her child being conceived and born without her having had sexual intercourse.

Was really excited for this when it came out. Wasn’t super familiar with Daredevil at the time, but was a big fan of Smith. Looking back, there’s too many words covering up the artwork. Marvel released a ‘marvel knights sketchbook’ promo mag that included the un inked pencils of the page where DD is jumping about on the rooftops. Would have been a great silent page.
Other trivia is that Matt has Jay and Silent Bob on speed dial (I translated the Braille at the time)

I see the Miller influence that Jim noted when I look at the style of DD that Miller drew for the Marvel Visionaries TPB covers.

Oh ya. I discovered emulation, as a Freshman in 96, with NESticle. Someone in the computer class loaded it onto the shared drive, so while the teacher wasn't facing us, we were playing NES games.
This book passed me by, as I wasn't reading this late in high school.

I read this in tpb format, as a teenager, for the first time. I FREAKING LOVED IT. I read it later last year and I have a complete different opinion now. Nice ideas, but poor executions. And too many word balloons!!! It wasn't the 60s no more. It has nice art and some cool scenes though

Excellent comics. Also, this story serves as an unofficial sequel to a very underrated Daredevil run by Karl Kesel and (mostly) Cary Nord. Great, lighter take of DD that got lost in all the shitty ninties comics it was next to.

I’m the same age as Ed and I remember reading this and loving it. I enjoyed it so much DD became my favorite character. I read this title non stop from this issue until a few issues into Soule’s run in 2015.

I bought this off a comic rack in a local convenience store down from the barber shop I worked at. I was lucky enough to get every issue if I remember right. I think it was Kevin Smith that lured me in as I'm not much of a Daredevil fan, and I'm pretty sure I dont have any other Quesada work in my collection. I do remember it being a great story, and I dont recall it being late but I might be wrong about that.

You hit the nail on the head early on, guys: "Kevin Smith is a comics fan". The man writes nothing but fan fic. He's connected, self-promoting and held the zeitgeist. Ultimately though, he's fake news.

This comic came out when I was about 13 years old. It was one of my favorites at the time. Quesada's art (the big hands and feet) was a huge inspiration at the time. I remember thinking this was one of the best superhero series I had ever read back then, but I wasn't yet familiar with Miller and Mazzucchelli's run either. Fun to look back. For whatever faults it might have, it is beyond light-years ahead of whatever garbage the big two put out now.

I love the art but this was the era where I tend to zone out with the overly long dialogues of Tarantino & Smith. I love Bendis but these barrage of boxes kill any momentum for me in reading a comic. It turns into a chore. If you haven’t, I strongly encourage anyone to check out Hal Hartley’s films. Huge influence on Smith early on.

You guys need to cover Daredevil: Father. Joe Q’s best art job. The story is … not exactly satisfying, but the art delivers. I remember then”Guardian Devil” trade being what later got me to read Miller’s Daredevil.

4:05 What is your solution if you want to convey a written letter with the font? Any good examples?I’ve been struggling with what to do and I’m not sure you’ve pointed out someone who did it successfully ever. I want to covey the idea of cursive lettering. All caps is even less readable in cursive it seems. I just started to think I was on the right path by not having a ton of loops or all the letters running together. Something kayfabed a bit closer to calligraphy. But damn hearing this again makes me think it might be impossible. Is it more to do with the size of the font than the shape of the letters themselves? Any examples of successfully executions of this or use of lowercase lettering are greatly appreciated.

I had an extreme hatred of the fonts being used in the late nineties by all the comic companies. Especially the white on black word balloons, cool idea that was completely unreadable.
