I loved this series. I fell in love with Rick Leonardi's art. I loved the imagination on display. I loved Miguel O'Hara's backstory. Good stuff. Ravage 2099, not good. Punisher 2099 ok.

I loved Punisher 2099 as a kid. It was so over the top. It was kind of an intro to edgier comics for me. It probably doesn't hold up :).

Same for me, I loved the first 10 issues of Spidey 2099. But I can see the guys’ point: as a first issue, not very satisfying. Peter David wanted Miguel to be the opposite of Peter Parker, and that made him unlikable in this first issue. He became more heroic later. My favorite issue is where Miguel’s mom turns out to be a huge fan of Spider-Man 2099; he tells her his secret identity, and she refused to believe it was true.

The first two years of Marvel 2099 are really great. Can you do a video of Ghost Rider 2099? Bachalo was killing it.

Love Rick Leonardi! His art was great on X-men fill in issues and the Daredevil issue where Wolverine is hunting Bushwacker. I always felt he was manga influenced!

It's interesting to look at Spider-man 2099 in comparison to Batman Beyond, which does the same thing, but a zillion times better. To Ed's point, Batman Beyond gives you a lot more of an investment in the story by having the elderly Bruce Wayne as a bridge to the original continuity.

They went that route in the Spider Girl series. I believe Peter was crippled or something.

Batman Beyond is just Spider-Man in the future. All the bad guys are just Spidey bad guys. Timm knew what he was doing, take Ditko Spider-Man and just run with it.

I first came across Rick Leonardi’s work in The Amazing Spider-Man.They introduced The Rose in the issues he did.I think it was in 1984.

Man I loved this book when I was a kid! One of my favorite memories of reading comics is when I read this issue. Just looking at the first page still fills me with wonder. I remember reading this in the car waiting for my mom getting her hair done, and just not believing what I was seeing. Great video thanks for the memories!

Rick Leonardi was inked by Kent Williams in Uncanny Xmen 252 which is a real weird one I’d love to see under the microscope. A Leonardi Daredevil that I really liked was 277.

I think Uncanny X-Men 231 is Leonardi's best comic. Its a Colossus story, and its amazing. 235 and 237 are also great X-Men issues by him.

Rick Leonardi was one of the all time great Spider-man artists. I loved the way he drew Spidey’s eyes in Spider-man #17. His knee and shin anatomy was so good and his poses were so dynamic

Looking at Spidey's feet on the cover reminds me of when I started Life Drawing Classes in '92. While looking at my art at the end of the first class, the teacher made me right away, "You're a comic book artist, aren't you?". Puzzled, I asked, "How can you tell?". He nodded at my gesture drawing, "Your feet!...Draw what you see!"

The future conceit for this future PAD was establishing was tributing Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Miguel's transformation is right out of Cronenberg's BrundleFly. Being aware of this, the issue was a much better read going in.

Loved this video. Answered many questions for me.
You guys often speak of “one and done” comics and I’ve been wondering exactly what you mean. You described some things here, which was great, but can you guys do more coverage of one and done comics and comics that like you say “give a complete episode”? Thanks Cartoonist Kayfabe and keep killing it!!!

Watching some of the "making of" videos of Across The SpiderVerse, how Rick Leonardi along with Brian Stelfreeze and many other artists are brought in to teach animators how to draw and make the marks they make- all in the service of celebrating the original artists. Same w Mahfood and Sienkiewicz and Picelli, it would be really interesting to hear Kayfabe's take on the films, especially since Miles Morales is a recent Marvel addition and pretty separate from any of the Lee/ Kirby/ Ditko/ Image artist era that is generally focused on.

  • @CaptainMcKayRandom

I forgot up until very recently just how big Marvel wanted the 2099 stuff to be. They were giving it a huge push across all media. I only remembered because recently I dug out all my trading cards from the 90s and ‘95 Flair Marvel Annual had a HEAVY 2099 presence, even in the bonus chase cards. You’d expect Wolverine or Hulk, but instead you’d get Punisher 2099.
Maybe it’s my memory, but 2099 didn’t land as well as they hoped because Age of Apocalypse was around the same time and was much more interesting for people? I was young so I may not have the greatest memory. Either way, it seemed like a cool experiment that never got its true peak.

Wow cool to see this here. This was my first comic book. Story is a mess but I would spend hours coping those figures. I recall getting it at a CVS. I never went to comic shops back then so I do think that memory is correct but nostaligic might of set in. I still have it though and the issues that followed it. There wasn't much I rember from the stories but I loved those ink lines. The Punisher 2099 might be a good one to look into if your intrested in doing more videos on this 2099 line. Enjoy the videos!

I remember having this comic as a kid but it came packaged in the action figure of spider man 2099 from Toy Biz. The comic had a white border instead of the red chrome. That white border version of the comic is the one that’s burned in my memory and the red border one looks weird to me lol. Shoulda kept that action figure cause a sealed one is going for 300-400 bucks right now.

I loved all of Marvel's alt world books - 2099, MC2, New Universe, WhatIf, Exiles, Mutant X....I think Marvel's best works are where they give their writers free reign and these books are wild. Everything else they make feels tame to me.

I didn't get past #1 on this one, but I think I got into Punisher 2099 for a while. For some reason??

  • @bannedinallston
    @bannedinallston 2 года назад

I bought into one of those #1 issue bundles too, wound up with Spidey, X-Men, Doom and Punisher, and against all odds and my current taste in comics, somehow the Punisher one ended up holding up the best. Just drops you right into the action, Punisher beats the shit out of a dude with a spiked baton in the first few pages, he fries a dude inside a holding cell with a microwave gun, that one was it.
Jimmy got it right, it's such a simple concept to bring these characters to a dystopian future, you dont need the corporate raider neuromancer bullshit frontloaded in issue one, just give us a cool future Spider Man, give us the action to hook us in, and build the world in upcoming issues.

2099 was really important to me... 30 years later, sometimes I still find myself going Back and thinking about the ideas in the book. X-Men made me bum the first 2099 Comic, bit spiderman and doom made me Jeep buying.

I'd love to see you all hop in to ALL the 2099 series. I feel like they were such a cool concept, and the gimmick covers actually looked great. But ultimately non of the titles really delivered on the premise. I feel like that's mostly due to almost universally unlikable characters. I still feel compelled by these titles though.

Spider-Man 2099 decompressed storytelling with a gimmicky cover: as crappy thirty years ago as it is today.
