A punch, an argument & an injury: What went wrong for Sadio Mané at Bayern?

  • When Sadio Mané left Liverpool for Bayern Munich, his stock was still incredibly high. He was still one of Liverpool’s most important players, he had recently lead Senegal to the African Cup of Nations title, and he still carried a lot of clout in the game. However, despite a decent start with Bayern Munich after what was considered to be quite the coup for the Bavarian giants, the wheels fell off relatively quickly. Of course, an injury in the fall did not help things, but Mané suddenly lost his finishing ability in the winter, lost his place as a starter, and made a habit of clashing with staff and teammates alike. Most notably, his clash with Leroy Sane after their 3 - 0 loss to Manchester City stands out.
Now it seems as though Sadio Mané could be on his way out of Bayern Munich after just a single season, as Thomas Tuchel told the media that he “fell short of expectations.” Is this the end?

The issue with Sadio Mane is that he was never a good fit for Bayern. Bayern has a lot a depth on the wings in Sane, Coman, Gnabry, and even Musiala can play on the wings and Mane has never been good as an out and out striker, even at Liverpool. Also, like it was said in the video, Mane is not a Bayern type of striker. A lot of the strikers that we've had over the years like Lewa, Gomez, Mandzukic, Makaay have been players that sit in the 18 yard box and cause some damage, which is a role that Mane was never going to fulfill.

What do you even mean?? Bayern literally play Pressing, high intensity football and that's what Mane understands...the problem with Bayern is not prioritizing Mane as the number one left Winger like seriously Sane over Mane?? Play Mane on the left and see if he doesn't perform he's 10× what Sane will ever be.

He has, to a certain extent, been a victim of circumstances at Bayern. But Nagelsmann did also change formations to accommodate him in his favored left wing position. And Mane never got benched despite poor performances until Tuchel came in.
He was put in a tough position and that should not be ignored, but his poor performances were still the main reason for his downfall in Munich.

The thing which made Mane special really had very little to do with finishing or even attacking. He's the best ball-winning forward I've seen in my lifetime. If he hadn't made it as a striker/forward he could easily have played a Kante role in midfield. It's the reason Liverpool's press was so successful. And it's also the facet of his game which declined the quickest because he no longer had the legs to chase his opponent down.

Liverpool fan here, Mane over-performed with us, he was always inconsistent. People outside of us would always say "Aww man Mane is the better payer out of him and Salah" Having not watched any games, he had dry spells of 5+ games of no goals, and of course, that's not all he does but he would miss big chances and clear cut chances alotttttttt. His work ethic and track back and speed created lots of space but he was just not scoring enough for the amount of chances he was getting. And when it came time for negotiation we couldn't offer him the same as Salah as salah was the better player...Mane was amazing for us for all in all, way more inconsistent then people outside of Liverpool knew. One my favourites, he had moments of genius and just amazing physicality aamazing legend but Salah was the overall better player, and i think he hated that he felt like he was playing second fiddle to him a lot and now has been shown to be exactly what he would be without klopp's encouragement and protection etc

Two things are at play - Mane is a player who worked really well in a particular system, but he’s not the type of generational talent that can go from playing really well at one team to replicating that elsewhere. He’s also the kind of player that needs to be loved, needs to be one of the main men - once it became clear that he was just another player and not a guaranteed starter, it was almost inevitable to turn sour.

Ask any Liverpool fan, Mane's loss of form and decline is absolutely not surprising whatsoever. He recovered form after changing to CF towards the end of the 21/22 season (after being very poor until AFCON) but it was clear he had started significantly declining. Mane also was never consistently clinical and missed plenty of chances throughout his Liverpool career, so the idea he could come in and replace Lewandowski while Mane's pace and other aspects of his game declined was fanciful.
Mane was also always known to be quite an emotional and intense guy at Liverpool. He's a great guy off the pitch as shown by the initiatives he's done in Senegal but being so emotional and intense could make it hard to integrate into a new team and deliver especially when things aren't going smoothly (as they did at Bayern).
At Liverpool, he grew with the team over 6 years so he didn't have these integration problems and he worked better with his teammates and management. Klopp was a big help of course.
Unfortunately for Bayern, AFCON 2022 and his form for Liverpool afterwards probably fooled them into believing they were getting that world class star he's been for the past few years but in reality those performances were the last embers of Sadio Mane in great form.

I think the best example for how "wrong" Mane was for Bayerns system was the 27-0 win against Rottach-Egern a couple weeks ago.
Rottach-Egern plays at the 9th division in Germany, they're literally amateurs and it was just a show-off for all of the Bayern players.
Expect Mané. He wasn't even able to fit into the system against these kind of teams...
You saw him getting more and more frustrated because he had to play against 10 defenders - definately not his strength.
He needs space and he comes with speed. Both are circumstances you won't experience much as a Bayern attacker.
Bayern usually plays against very deep defending teams, because everyone knows if you give Bayern the space you're screwed...
So, either you try to defend with all you got and hope for the best - or you got the quality to attack them without getting countered (like ManCity).
The most surprising aspect of all of this is, that obviously nobody at Bayern predicted this...

Add to that fact that he's losing speed and agility due to age and injuries. You can see that this was never going to be more than a season or two fix until they could bring in a Harry Kane.

With mane he never won us a game by himself, at the start of the season he helped a lot in some matches only. De ligt won two games on his own with long range rockets, kimmich is the same, pavard scored a lot as a left back. Chopo, gnabry, sane, coman in big games, musiala, and muller sometimes. All helped considerably more than others in specific matches, and were the deciders or heavy contributors. Mane sadly was never that other than slightly at the start of the season, I feel for him but as a bayern fan too, I have to say come on man.

A 30 y/o Harry Kane is just another setup for failure. I know choupo is no Kane, but he’d easily score 20-25 goals in the league starting game day 1, that would mean Kane has to immediately turn out lewandowski numbers to justify 100m then, what are the chances of that happening?
Another 100m only to cope with the fact that city snatched haaland from dortmund for cheap and not them, after learning nothing from the past 100m lost to James, coutinho and mane.

But they're not unique. City somehow seem to play to a higher level than Liverpool whilst also having a squad full of asthmatics. Again, I'm sure it's got nothing to do with their disgraced doctor the hired, you know, pep's doctor who treated him as a player during the time he was banned TWICE for failing drugs tests.

He's an inside forward but played as a false 9 during his final year at Liverpool plus Bayern Munich has wingers galore. It's a shame the move to Bayern Munich was disaster since he's always injured and getting in fights with his teammates albeit was in the top 3 players in the Ballon D'or rankings.

Sadio Mane might be past his best at Bayern Munich this is simple logic as to why he’s been a shadow of his former self there. He was unlucky with an injury which ruled him out of the World Cup and after the tournament he was ruled out for more games and once he came back into the side he was unable to get back to his best. He did start off well but the injury unraveled his season and it’s not just on the field where his performances have been below par and has struggled for goals and form, he’s had some toxic moments in the Bayern Munich dressing room. First there were reports that after being dropped for an important champions league game he was seen shouting at Julian Nagelsmann in the dressing room in front of his teammates and this was before his sacking and a month later after losing the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals against Manchester City away from home Sadio Mane punched Leroy Sane in the lip which caused him to be fined and then suspended for a game. After the arrival of Thomas Tuchel he has found himself on the bench and couldn’t break into the lineup when fit and now Bayern Munich want to sell him after the shocking season he had last time around and to think that this was a player who was one of the best in the world not too long ago.

It should have been a great move for Mane and Bayern, but a single moment of madness has cost him dearly. Being German they expect discipline from their players at all times and they probably thought it could lead to disharmony in the squad if he stayed. He did show it at times at Liverpool with a few memorable incidents with Salah so it’s not completely out of character. He was a great player for us during a very successful era so will always be remembered fondly by Liverpool fans and I wish him luck in Saudi where he’ll score bags of goals.

  • @Raghzor
    @Raghzor 10 месяцев назад

That he lead the Bundesliga for disallowed goals is no surprise to me. I felt like every goal he scored was disallowed due to offside. And many times he had never even returned onside, just walking or jogging back. Gotta say it was frustrating from the start, and I had to pinch myself when the news dropped that he was signed by Bayern. As said in the video, there was never any chance for him to break into the starting 11, being second or third at best for the position, unless he'd suddently pop off with crazy numbers.
It was very annoying that they never went for a proper 9, seeing as many games the gameplan was set for a slow paced setup with crosses for a target forward. Just like Germany did in 2016 using Götze as a 9 instead of Gomez. I don't really feel like one should be able to so easily dissect these top-top coaches who has done so much, but in these cases it has been so apparent. In the last half-year of 22/23 it felt like most goals were scored from the defense, with longshot from de Ligt and Kimmich, and Pavard doing Pavard things.

That's hits you mentality adding to Bayern's struggles you can see how Mane lost it like Mane is not that type of guy he's not shy and silent like Kante but he doesn't do things you'd consider wrong or outrageous.
Bayern need to give him a chance remember, just before last season he finished top 4 in the Balon do'r the players that need selling at Bayern are Sane and Gnabry especially Sane this guy runs alot but he ain't clinical and he has attitude problems that's why Pep sold him and i guarantee you he's the one who provoked Mane.

It's simply a reason related to discrimination, if you have watched Bayern long enough. Countless examples all these years.
Sane got the license to fuck up as many years as he can, simply because he is a German.
Mane has to be punished when fighting with a German Sane, because he's an African.
Growing up in East Germany, Toni Kroos can never be allowed to get the same pay as Lahm or Thomas Muller.
No matter how better Sommer is than Neuer currently, he still needs to leave to make his way for Neuer, because he is a Swiss.
Roy Makaay must leave to make his way for Klose and Podolski, despite both of them combined unable to score as many as Roy, just because Roy is not a German. Let alone Claudio Pizzaro.
Top scorer Luca Toni was axed and insulted publicly to give up his place for the poorly performing Klose and Mario Gomez.

But, Nagelsmann even changed the formation to better suit his team without a no9, but it never really worked for more than 2 games. Mané also had maybe one or two really good matches before the injury and after, man, he was probably worse than anyone else in the pitch (bayern or opposition), even with Tuchel giving him opportunity after oppoprtunity. Its a shame that I didnt worked, but now the board must be praying for him to accept the Saudi offer, so they can can some money back and be free from his huge salary, it's really a pit that it didn't worked...
