    My England 11:
    RB- Kyle Walker
    CB- Marc Guehi
    CB- John Stones
    LB- Kieran Trippier
    RDM- Bellingham
    LDM- Rice
    LAM- Gordon
    CAM- Foden
    RAM- Saka
    ST - Kane
Bellingham at double pivot is the most important player, being that roaming playmaker that provides outlet paces and dictates the structure of the team. Bellingham also athletic enough to pop up in space and make a late run from there. It's a position that fits the profile of someone who's been learning under Kroos and Modric for a season. It also frees up Foden to make runs vulnerable space, turn and make split second decisions which is what he's most dangerous at. You could put Bellingham at 10 but then he has to cover a lot more space to receive the ball and it might isolate Kane. The above formation allows the best of both worlds.

There does seem to be a feeling of worry about the squad but I think people are focusing too much on fringe players that won't see many minutes anyway.
Aside from who partners Rice, we already know 10 of the first XI before the squad was announced. Now the squad has been announced it's just Guehi in for Maguire. It's not ideal to have your centre back partnership broken up before a tournament starts and I'm a tad concerned, but Guehi is a good player.
Walker - Stones - Guehi - Shaw seems good to me.
The rest of the XI will be as expected and we have great options off the bench.
Couple of injuries in defence and maybe we panic a bit more, but right now still feeling good!

  • @tykrise
    @tykrise 7 месяцев назад +3

Completely agree, if the question is 'How do we replace Maguire's attributes' I think the correct/sensible call is Lewis Dunk, for aerial threat, leadership and cross-field passes (pace of Saka, Bowen and Gordon will suit that like Mitoma). That guy has been first choice under three top-level managers, captained Brighton through Promotions, European comebacks, and Relegation Fights (that BHA has always won).
Also, I genuinely think people are sleeping on how great he is at progressing the ball forwards, he's defo not just a Brexit defender like some say (used to be that under Hughton but that's nearly 8 years ago now).
That said, I don't think Dunk starts. You then have to give Stones a partner, and in a choice between Guehi and Branthwaite, Guehi is probably the right call at the moment, just seems a little more experienced and mature positionally (eye test, there's probs stats that prove me wrong on that ha). But you cannot argue. Guehi has more experience than Branthwaite right now.
Branthwaite is the future, no denying it. Colwill also in that convo on the future left side of defence.
Eze such a baller, great for breaking down stubborn low blocks with his quick feet and composure. Perfect 60-min sub.
I think Gareth has been dealt a difficult hand with Injuries and form, but imo he's made the best of it. Let's go 😎

A lot of people will be talking about the back four being weak and I get that, I have similar anxieties there. However, assuming Luke Shaw is fit and has had some minutes under his belt by the time the knockouts come around, the defence could look like this:
    Pickford
    Walker Stones Guehi Shaw
And when I look at that, I just feel like it's actually not as bad as people might think it is. Had Maguire not have had the decent season he's had this year, this selection of players may have been pretty much who we were expecting to play anyway, no?
Ok, maybe we'll lose a bit of that aerial presence at set-pieces which Maguire has so often given us; perhaps we'll be a bit more vulnerable to crosses into our box too, but we have to back Guehi. No need to underrate him: he's a very capable and athletic centre-half. We're still a strong side in this tournament imo.

    Taking Eze/Gordon/Bowen is a positive, for Southgate's pragmatic/6-4 system.
Players like Grealish/Maddison are useful if England were to play dynamic/5-5/pressing/maintaining possession in the opposition final third.
England are more likely to be in a situation, when the pragmatic approach hasn't worked for 75mins, and so you bring on a player/s to try to make the difference, through pace or individual flair. Gordon/Bowen/Eze are more those guys. That is where they have excelled for Palace/West Ham/Newcastle.

As long as Pickford is in goal, Lewis Dunk doesn't get a game, and Luke Shaw gets fit I wouldn't be bothered. An injury to Shaw, we lose that width on the left side of the field, and without the width will be sat playing predictable football. Without the left field, I imagine Gomez would play as an inverted-full-back on the left, tucking into the left side allowing Rice to attack a bit, leaving a double pivot of TAA and Gomez. Not the worst thing. I don't think England will win, probs knocked out in the quarters, but it's nice to see Southgate having a go. And he’s had longer at a prem side playing regularly too (big Adam Wharton fan to be clear he deserves his place). If Maguire was fit then I get it, that LCB roll is taken and that’s that. But he’s not in the squad. Yes Guehi has the England experience but what has he actually DONE in those appearances? I honestly think he’s looked poor for England especially against good teams. Plus he’s missed a lot of football. I don’t even think I need to get into how insane it is to take dunk not Branthwaite, unless dunk doesn’t play a minute at LCB (like Coady). Branthwaite is younger and a similar level if not better than Guehi and Dunk, of the 2 young LCB options in the squad (Guehi and Branthwaite) he’s much more likely the Maguire replacement down the line. Why not trust him and give him his shot. I can see our defence being our downfall for the first time in an international tournament, that defence worries me…

Lewis Dunk isn't good enough at international level. Braithwaite should of been given a chance

You can't say the mix of profiles is a plus when we have only 1 left footed defender and one outlet winger in gordon

midfield should be rice 6 bellingham 8 and foden 10. i understand foden and bellingham both play the 10 but i think bellingham can still effect the game from an 8 better than foden can from the left wing. fodens half turn into the 20 yard finesse banger has been his greatest tool all year and he score that same goal in 2 HUGE games this year (madrid, and west ham). front 3 should be gordon kane saka. and use gordon as a long ball threat like united uses garnacho. then you have kane, foden, bellingham, and rice who can pick that pass through on goal

cole palmer on for gordon at 65 minutes every game. then him and foden flow freely between each other just like foden and bernardo do for city.

Feel like I'm the only one who's really happy with this squad. Bold, attacking and finally picking on form without favourites. I would have had Branthwaite over Gomez and I'm quite concerned by only having Shaw as a left footed left back but otherwise it's a great

Trippier cost Newcastle so many goals id rather have Gomez there

Trent AA should be in midfield where he can pass, Real Madrid or Barcelona would happily pay 80 mil for him and play him in midfield, but you can bet Southgate will not take him and will take players who Madrid and Barcelona wouldnt even want if they were free, total clown manager, was a 3rd rate player and now 3rd rate manager. People in South America and Europe think Trent AA is Englands best player, but all the English are concerned about is oh hes not good defending, put him in midfield then.

As a non-English, I think the same way Southgate was criticised in the past for sticking with the same squad (eg: Maguire), now that he changes things up for Euro I believe it’s fair to give him a chance

Only decision I would have done different is Branthwaite for Dunk. Otherwise im pleasantly suprised!

Not taking Maguire or Branthwaite makes me really concerned

I mean, this year we have at least 5 top penalty takers in the squad. If you're putting Kane, Palmer, Bowen, Toney and Saka as our 5 these days, it's lights out

on what basis is kobie mainoo with 20 senior apps better than curtis jones, who has played in the CL and had multiple assists in knockout matches?

@@JohnMccann-ld3yr no evidence Mainoo is a top flight player yet, despite coordinated media propaganda. United have Garnacho who is a significantly better player but no attempt to hype him up as their saviour. Mainoo will not have 100 prem apps by 24, suspect he ends up at Southampton etc
