It’s called ‘shill’ bidding. It’s an offense that can get the account canceled/closed.

I've found that honest people should usually go with their gut on these types of things. You come off as a pretty genuinely honest person, so you are probably on point with this. Also the fact that the seller was defensive and refunded your money after you still paid in full tells me that they were overcompensating for getting caught - which can be a reaction to guilt.

    • @SkunkPunch73
      @SkunkPunch73 3 года назад +1

I know what you’re saying but it can also be a seller that has taken his accusations as a massive insult so they just thought to themselves ok smart arse you think that’s how I roll? . Then have a slap in the face just for your cheek throw them their money back and keep the item they know that the person really really wanted but because of his accusation decided to give him the seller’s equivalent of the finger right back.

I hope your father gets better soon. And stays better. My dad went into the hospital at the end of 2019 and was there for about a month. It was very scary. He eventually left and was doing well. But passed away last June at his home while I was at work. Its crazy how short life is and how quickly and unexpectedly it can COMPLETELY change. Without notice.
Spend every minute loving your dad. Hugging him. And taking pictures and video of him. I realized quickly that I don't have NEARLY enough pictures or video of my dad. I have some voicemails and a couple of videos that I watch/listen to to hear his voice. Learn from my mistake. I chose to up my love for him when he left the hospital. from what I understand a seller can get in trouble for bidding on their own auctions to jack the price even with fake accounts in order to scam buyers or artificially inflate the price. I tried to buy an item but just as I was receiving my purchase confirmation I got a message saying that the item was in fact not available -- was the only one offered and it was a "buy it now" listing. made me wonder if that seller just wanted money for nothing but I got a refund and that seller was no longer on eBay

I actually sell on eBay and a frequent eBay seller. I can tell you that you do not need permission for the seller to retract your bid on any auction and it will not retract the bid incrementally it would only retractable the bid on the last payment you put down. And unfortunately this does happen but very rarely. ( if anything happens like this again don't hesitate to actually call eBay support that's what they're your for) they're actually there only to help you and actually leave satisfied. depending on your situation

Jeff, think of this.. because people with zero or negative feedback have a tendency to not pay.. so if someone wins that just made a new account with no feedback the seller can cancel that person's bid and cancel them down until they get to the person they know will pay for the item. I'm just saying, I honestly think if the seller is depending on selling something on eBay and paying all the fees then he would not take a chance on someone with horrible feedback. Just my 2 cents

  • @andrewwalker651

Hi Jeff it may not have been a scam, I have had similar bidding activity on items I have sold on eBay in the uk. If a bid is made early on an item another bidder will bid up in increments until they find out how much the first bidder has bid on an item then retract either all or some of their bids ( this can be done in the uk, don’t know about the usa. If there is 12 hours or more left on the auction) then if they are willing to out bid they will submit a price a pound or two over what they found out the first bidder had on the item moments before the auction ends. It’s a sneaky way of not getting in to a bidding war. Also as a seller I can understand giving a refund no questions asked before the item is sent as it can save a lot of hassle if it is likely there will be a dispute with a buyer.

  • @SkunkPunch73

I think you have got your wires crossed! I know that if you put your bid in a Max’s of 100 just for example. The next bidder then places their bid and if it’s lower eBay will then place your bid which beats their bid all the way until it hits your maximum amount. Then if a bid is received you get your notification that you have been out bid. Now if you try retracting a bid it doesn’t let you slowly go down in your bids but you just retract it all in one go no increments aloud. Plus if it’s close too the end of the bid with in 48 hours the only way you can try and get your bid retracted is by contacting the seller, before this you don’t have to contact them . If the bidding history was showing someone slowly increasing their bids that’s normal as they are just trying too win and also battling with the amount they are willing to pay (we all get a little bit carried away ) but if they placed a bid of 2000$ in and your bid was only 100$ it wouldn’t show up that you had been out bid and then show 2k in the bids but only $100.01 I hope this makes some sort of sense to you I am sorry I am incredibly dyslexic and just can’t write out what is very easy for me to speak. But still at the end of the day you can always report the seller and if they are not doing anything wrong then nothing will happen to them whatsoever. Have a beautiful day 😘👍

His prices sound like a gun store I buy from often. Private owned shop and because of that it made no sense for him to bulk buy firearms to get cheaper shipping and bulk pricing. So his prices reflects that extra price and shipping on top of his cut of the sale. On the plus side he will order anything from anywhere (including used on gunbroker) to his store for you and only charge 10% for his time and the typical transfer and background fee. But that being said he is local and I like supporting local.

Jeff you almost certainly got screwed. I've had similar experiences on Ebay which has made me not go there first over the years. Probably 6 years ago or so my daughters favorite show was NCIS. She made good grades and to reward her I went to ebay and looked for the DVD set with all the seasons, after finding multiple listings I found one and actually won it for around $40 I believe when all of the other listings were going around $100. As soon as I won it the shipping changed from $11.99 (which I believe was the medium flat rate box price at the time) to like $45. I immediately starting raising hell with the seller and reported him to eBay and at first his excuse was that he didn't know the proper price it was going to cost to ship the dvd's until after the fact. I called him out on his bs and he actually refunded on the shipping money and the dvd's showed up in a medium flat rate box. He was trying to recover some of the money he lost from me winning the auction threw the shipping cost

I'm a seller on ebay and your story sounds odd if a person bids and cancels it usually will go to the last bidder. Also I was looking for a knife and missed a seller who had it listed for 630 and 10 shipping at the time so as a seller you have ebay fees plus taxes so basically he would have got about 520 total and he had listed a different color of the same knife and I had asked if he had more versions available so he gives me his email and I contacted him and he had like 4 of these knives and had 2 left . So he showed one that wasn't the colors I wanted and it was more than I wanted to pay and then he said he had one more and it would be cheaper and in the range I was able to afford so he showed me the pic and it was the one I wanted so I said 600 for it and PayPal only so no fees what I offered is what you would get and then he changes his story saying it's my carry one and idk so i said you just told me that this was one you would sell and now you don't then he tries to get more money for it and I just was on Google search and I found a listing for the same knife and that's how I found out about that listing for 630 so after a few days I sent him a message about his previous listing and how I was giving more than what he would have made if he sold it on ebay then he tries to say he's not greedy but wants more money after that I just told him if I had known about the knife a week earlier I would have got the knife and he would have got less money for it. After this person and seeing his greed it was truly disappointing especially since he had alot of these models he sold and made a lot of money

No seller doesn't need to approve the other person retract their bid! The other person can withdraw their bid when ever they want expect if they made their bid 12 hours before the auction ended. The only thing that's weird is if that bidder out bid you they will know exactly how much your bid amount is so they don't need to retract many times to be under your bid amount.

I have one too real quick , I rarely use Ebay and just have recently for a few knives that are hard to get. Ofcourse in the search for these knives up pops a Chinese replica of a very popular knife I wont say which one lol. And it happened to be a very good one at that. I quickly watched some reviews and decided to give it a shot , I was more so curious to see how they packed this much into the price they were asking lol. The sketchy part is everytime I would put in a pretty good size bid that usually any other time would win the auction I was instantly over bid. And then when I backed out and wouldn't continue the bid war started recieving messages and emails saying it's still available this and that. Ya. Seems like a controlled auction to me. No thanks. The sad part is this just isnt on Ebay. Scams are everywhere now and only getting way worse and prevalent. Be careful out there!

Yeah, he found a loophole in the system. I was banned from eBay because the knife I wanted had a instant purchase price, and I bought it at that price, then the seller raised the price. I would not pay the raised price, and he reported me for not paying. I then sent him messages about his methods, and ebay banned me for harassment. I hate ebay.

You can retract one or 2 bids in a month period anything more than that you have to call and give a damn good explanation for your reasons.... He definitely tried to scam you I'm glad you aren't out the cash you should definitely contact Ebay and report him.

Sounds too fishy. Use a auction sniper program, will help with that problem. Bidding in last few seconds will avoid scammers trying to shill bid

I searched sold listings on eBay and found what appears to be the same "brag bag" that was sold again potentially after this incident. the seller had the same bidding history as Jeff described. the item was overbid and then incrementally canceled from a third bidder until the person who won only won by one cent. definitely seems like the guy did it on purpose and unfortunately shilled someone else out of some more money. I won't post any info on them but it wasn't that hard to find.

Yeah you can't take your bid back once you bid that's it.
If you don't buy it then you get a penalty for not buying the product.
I'm real careful when bidding I don't go over what the product is worth you can't go with feelings.
I seen junk garbage go for top dollar on eBay.

I just found the auction on ebay... they definitely broke ebay rules. I can't see the bidder besides them having 335 feedback but it says next to their name that they aren't a registered user. Must be that user name got kicked but the seller is still selling. The user that bid definitely did a bid of 150 and then retracted that and then went 140... then retracted the 140 and then finally bid the 135 all within 5 minutes and then retracted their last bid hours after.. their final bid that they left was 138.. definitely not right to take advantage of you

It does sound like a scam, and on eBay there’s a lot of scammers, however, as a seller eBay tells you what the highest bid on your product is, so it’s possible that he’s telling the truth and that “other guy” was just trying to help him get the most money for it. Just a possibility but it could also very much have been someone trying to play you. Either way it’s a bummer.

It's always weird when you don't hear people truncate the second a in Lancaster - it makes you stick out. Down here in mid we just go "Lankister"
Makes me wanna go to this place - at worst I'll just tell myself "It was a convenience charge"
Yeah man, the worst stuff happens to me when I don't listen to my instincts. Sounds shady, totally not interested.

I don’t know about that to be honest, but it definitely seems fishy. I would simply avoid that seller from now on. Always check their feedback. It’s not as easy to scam people on eBay today like it used to be thanks to the new safeguards the company and PayPal have put in place. I never had to retract one of my bids so I don’t know how that process works. Just be careful who you buy from.

No what you describe is something that happens way more common than you think on eBay. And when the seller is caught it's very ugly for them between them and eBay. And when someone like you was to report it and eBay looks into it there's no hiding when it's done so that's why he went and refunded your money he didn't want the heat. I can bet my eye teeth

The shill bidder (the seller or seller's friend?) did this on another auction that ended the same day as yours. The shill account has since been closed. I would say that it is pretty conclusive that they were trying to get more $ out of you.
