I was 14 years old living near the Botanical Gardens in St George. This storm ripped the roof from right over my head. I remember my ears were popping. We ending getting under a table and propped a mattress on one side. Our fenced in yard was destroyed and one of our dogs was missing. A week later he walked up to the house much to my surprise and relief. What a memory…this brought back a flood of them. Thank you for sharing…I shared this video with my sister, looks like she remembers you from Country Day. Her name is Paula Brokaw, you may remember her.

I survived Hurricane Hugo on 9/17/1989, I lived on St Thomas. The roof tore entirely off the house I was living in. I was downstairs with the entire veranda glass all boarded up, hunkered down in the bedroom where there were no windows. Hugo tore the roof off entirely off and ripped off every piece of plywood that was nailed to the concrete covering up all windows and sliders. It was the longest night of my life. I stayed 2 more years after Hugo, a total of 5 years, and helped rebuild. It was beautiful watching everyone come together. As I sit in Florida, I am preparing for Hurricane Ian to come through; it is 9/26/2022; I look back and reflect on how big Hugo was and how I am not afraid, and how the God I serve is so much bigger than any storm I will ever go through. He protects His children, and Jesus brings a sense of peace to my heart that, at times, is overwhelmingly beautiful. Thank you for this video, I have watched it year in and year out around the anniversary of Hugo... God bless all in Hurricane Ian's path right now...

I was nine years old when the hurricane blew through St.Croix. Everything we lost were of material value but all my loved ones survived. There were about ten of us huddled in one small room throughout the night. After the hurricane, the most difficult things for me were washing clothes by hand and standing in long lines for ice. But there were so many beautiful things that resulted from not having access to our usual conveniences (besides my great appreciation for the washing machine). For one neighbors helped each other more than usual. And we manufactured many games that we played at night when there was no electricity. We sang a lot since we didn't have a radio, we told lots of stories, and we laughed a lot. Most importantly, we spent quality time with family and friends.
I moved to the US to pursue a college education and have been here since but St.Croix will forever be my home. Nothing compares to hanging out on the beach, drinking coconut water followed by eating some fresh fish that my uncle caught and cleaned my mom cooked on the beach. You just can't put a price tag on that :)

@@acjnse8258 Nope, I didn't know him and never met him but some of the basketball players that I went to school with knew him. My highschool gymnasium was named after him and he came to my school for the ceremony. I really didn't care for all the hoopla so I didn't attend the event which had crowds of people inside and outside just trying to get a glimpse of him. He has done a lot of great things for the island.

Wow. Just wow. I was 6 years old when Hurrican Hugo hit. I remember the roof flying off while I was sleeping with the rest of the kids in the hallway, I remember running to the closet, helping to hold the mattress over the closet, I remember having to pee in a bucket. Gosh, I just got chills watching this. Thank you for sharing.

Man Matt Edwards it must have felt like the world was coming to an end going thru Hugo in the Virgin Islands and St. Croix back in 1989 were u In the island's still when Hurricane Irma hit on September 6th 2017 as a Category 5 with 180 mph winds I saw the destruction Irma cause in Barbuda, St. Martin, and the British Virgin Islands as a category 5 storm and I must say Irma is now the new benchmark hurricane for the Northern Leeward islands Hugo was epic and extremely devastating but I believe with no doubt Irma was on another level would u agree?

this is my first memory, I remember the sounds of the winds and a few other details. I was 2 and a half. my mother was pregnant with me and my older brother. my family had lived on st Croix for about 15 years, but it destroyed our home. we were homeless mostly for another 6 years before we were able to stabilize again. I definitely wish I could hear more stories about the storm, it fascinates me because it so severely effected my family and changed the course of our lives but also because it produced my first memories such as seeing a tornado and being hungry , being exited and in awe at what happened to the house, etc.

I went through Hugo at the base of Ham's Bluff. One of my jobs was keeping the generator running and it did run all night and kept on even though it was the only light on the whole island. The generator building collapsed but the Detroit Diesel kept running and generating. We had the full eyewall and then the calm, then the wind started back the other way just as strong. The next morning we were isolated and though we may have been the only ones who survived it looked so bad, not a leaf on any tree, not a blade of grass. There was a ship that worked with us at Hess' Krause Lagoon, the M/V Acoustic Explorer, which registered 168 mph then the anemometer was blown away. NWS believes the strongest winds were between Salt River and Ham's Bluff along the north west corner of the island so possibly one of the strongest storms ever seen in thge Atlantic.

NIICE VIDEO.I was living on St.Croix at the time with my mother and brother. It was pure luck that I wasn't there for the storm. my father had asked me if I would fly back and drive him and his wife to his hometown inPA for a kin d of "roots"tour before he died.So Iwas in Pittsbughat a cousins house the night of the storm. We knew it was bad when no phone calls would go through to the island.Wencut short the trip and drove back to Savannah,GA where my father lived.mAfter unpacking at my mothers house on Wilmington island,I pondered what to do next, the phones still did not work and the nightly news was showing video of looters at Sunny Isles.I drove to Jacksonville and chartered a plane to take me to the island.Hen we got there ,the ,I limilitary asked the pilot if we were a "relief"flight. I told him to say yes.E were a relief flight ,albeit, a private one.I rented a car and drove up to my mother' s house and found the second floor gone, but fortunately every one was alright..T

I still remember those 2 days VERY well! 8 years old held up in the old Hess warehouse with most of all the other Hess families ( my first year on island and first hurricane) . Breaking through the wall to the firehouse in the middle of the night due to the roof starting to come up (it held though) then seeing the unimaginable change in the beautiful island the next after noon. Hugo trudging over St.Croix full on moving at only 8mph with Cat 5 winds seemed to suck the color out of the leaves of the trees even. The Massive Oil Storage tanks crushed like coke cans and houses left with nothing but a foundation and a toilet. Trees I used to climb and places I used to go..the people we used to be changed forever.
Annoying you never hear much or see much about St. Croix when you search about Hugo...its always about when it hit mainland after it tore the Caribbean up and downgraded

San Antonio Spurs player (and probably GOAT on the Spurs franchise) Tim Duncan was a native of St. Croix and was trying out to eventually become an Olympic swimmer; Hugo destroyed the only Olympic-sized pool on the island and Duncan developed a fear of sharks from swimming in the ocean, so he switched to basketball and the rest, as they say, is history (on a side note, Duncan will never have to buy a drink in the San Antonio area ever again)...

I spent the night of Hugo on a boat in entrance to Salt River Marina. When it got dark we counted nearly 40 boats in the bay and in the morning there were none except for the steel boat in front of us and those behind us in the marina. Your video gave me goose bumps it brought back some amazing memories. I have photographs of the scenes you filmed in down town Christiansted and the yacht club. After the hurricane we helped Jeanne and Chuck Goodrich with the rebuild of their house. Do you happen to know of them; Chuck was in real estate at the time? I am still in touch with many people who were on island then and I will post your link on my Facebook page for them to see.

What happened to the footage DURING the hurricane? I saw another St. Croix film, showing these people, that showed filming at the amazing height of the storm. But not here. After about 14:00 minutes of buildup, it cuts to aftermath. What a letdown!

It all happened in the night. There wasn't much to see, but a lot to hear!

@@Defender-Guy There used to be a video with Chris Hanley narrating as the roof was going off.

They went to the closet in the back and survived there. If they had stayed out in the living room well yopu saw what would have happened, flying glass and everything. Once you get six people in a closet huddled together with the roof coming off you wouldn't feel like running a video camera, plus the candle lights would have blown out.

I was stateside at school. I remember an effort by some students to charter a plane and go home. Then came the call from Hess that my parents were ok. When I went home that December for break, you could see all the way in the bush and remember pulling volunteer guard duty at Judith’s Fancy. Our driveway was the first left on JF after Bacuba Rd. The house sort of across from us just had a cement block left. We lost some shingles, and had a lit of our neighbor’s appliances in our pool. Hugo, IMO, was the start of STX’s downward spiral. I hope it ends soon. We still absolutely LOVE deh rock mehson and visit somewhat regularly. Peace and love to all Cruzans.

Just brute force and ignorance. I survived Hugo. I went back last September 17th and that island is still a hot mess. I'm so glad I left.

This is endlessly fascinating. We just bought property in LaGrande Princess, so it's great to watch the recent history of the island.
