    So after 9 months I thought I'd update you guys in case you get asked the same question I originally did. I have alcohol free vanilla extract and decided to experiment with that to see if I could mix it with my gel dye and luster dust and if it would dry completely with no brush strokes. Well, guess what? It works perfectly! No brush strokes and the fondant dried up completely with no issues at all.
    Thanks for taking the time to reply to me :)

      Can I use vanilla extract if I'm painting a heart made out of chocolate x

    The word she said before alcohol is "pure grain", meaning a good quality (with a higher alcohol content) alcohol such as a good quality vodka. Never, ever use rubbing alcohol, because it is not meant for consumption.
    And using whiskey, or any alcohol that isn't clear or that leaves a taste after the alcohol evaporates does not work well. If you don't want to use alcohol, you can use clear lemon extract, which works quite well, too.

    I LOVE using luster dust, in fact my daughter says.. "Mom everything does not have to shine" lol

    You can use clear lemon extract, which gives quite good results. Although, it does have a very small alcohol content, just as vanilla extract does. But the alcohol evaporates completely out when it dries, leaving it alcohol free.

    It's against my religion to consume alcohol in any form, is there a substitute that I can use?

  • @thaZEBRAmussel
    @thaZEBRAmussel 11 лет назад

    Thanks for replying, TheDeltaBelle.
    Unfortunately, that still wouldn't be an option as I can not work with alcohol to begin with regardless if it evaporates completely or not.
    However, I recently tried this technique with my alcohol free vanilla extract and it worked perfectly :)

    There isn't anything that will give you the same look. You can use a little water with a drop of oil, but you will still have a little bit of pastiness and brush strokes (these two don't mix, after all). You can also brush it on dry, but it will migrate a bit.

    Nós usar Vodka ou Everclear e o brilho ou pétalas pó. Everclear é apenas uma barata álcool de cereais. Você também pode usar limão ou baunilha extrato, mas essas alterações não secar rapidamente, tornam o fondant pegajosa e deixar para trás thier sabor

    hi. I was wondering if you are supposed to let the gumpaste molds completely dry before you paint them with lustre dust? my confusion is that I have a slightly rounded mold I want to use on a round cake, but if I wait until it dries I will not be able to bend it to the cake without it breaking. any tips are appreciated! !

    Alcohol as in drinking alcohol you can buy straight from the grocery store? Or is it a specific baking type of alcohol?

  • @annamisous
    @annamisous 10 лет назад +1

    I Had just bought myself a luster dust in old gold from the bakery store near my area. On it , it says "non-toxic" " Not to be consumed for decorative use only" .. so does that mean its edible still? Please let me know as soon as possible. I cant call the bakery place because they closed today. Thank You.

    • @SweetWiseInc
      @SweetWiseInc  10 лет назад +1

      The non-toxic dusts are not food. However, as they are non-toxic, ingesting a little won't harm anyone. A good analogy would be lipstick. Lipstick is non-toxic but inadvertently, most people who wear lipstick do ingest a little while eating/drinking. Hope that helps.

    Really looking for a response to this question I left months ago. Sooo...I seem to have no luck in getting a smooth coat like you. I use bacardi 151 and it is still streaky and not smooth. Does the paint brush matter? I've used lemon juice, several types of vodka and my finish is always thin and grainy with streaks. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @SweetWiseInc
      @SweetWiseInc  9 лет назад

      Ms jerlady I apologize; didn't see the comment. Could be a couple of things. FIrst, make sure your mixture isn't too thick, which can leave it looking "gloppy", or too thin, which can leave it looking sparse. The brush can matter- if it is really stiff, the bristles can drag through and leave the brush marks. You can also try going over it with a second coat once the first coat has dried completely. Too soon and it will pull the first coat off. I use pure grain alcohol for larger areas- seems to show less.

    • @missjerlady
      @missjerlady 9 лет назад

      Sweet Wise Thanks SO much, I will try these things.

    can I use an extract (vanilla,almond,etc)instead of alchohol (vodka,etc.)?

    • @SweetWiseInc
      @SweetWiseInc  8 лет назад +1

      +Laboricuamamys2002 Sure, if it's a pure extract, not a flavor. Also check for color- like vanilla will be colored. The reason that works, though, is because of the alcohol content. Check you bottle for the percentage. 40% alcohol content=80 proof, which is right up there with vodka.
