- This Sunday our community will observe Tisha B'av and turn our attention to the city of Jerusalem, mourning the destruction of its temples some two millenniums ago. Here is the most famous love song to Jerusalem, my hometown, sung with my amazing colleagues Cantors Netanel Herstik and Yaakov Lemmer live in Amsterdam for the PBS Special "The New York Cantors".

I am neitherJewish nor Israeli, but I admire this People, one of the most incredible in the world, surviving for over two thowsand years with work, culture, science , always attacked by other peoples, never attacking anyone. Of course since 1948 there was been violance for its survival.
The first time I heard this song was in 1999 on a tourist bus with Joseph Shulam driving up to Jerusalem for the first time. Gave me chills. I have never forgotten that experience or the song.
Our father, who was both Cantor and Rabbi (and Optometrist!) and an incredible Jewish singer, has been away after he passed, for longer than I can recall, that is, until now. Hearing our Rabbi Chaim sing along with the depths of his love and years and years later, felt as if Grandpa Hi seemed to sprout forth kindness and love in our own home and shule.
We miss "Grandpa Hi" terribly, and even as a child I remember Grandpa's Cantorial and the sound of Dad's Rabbi singing and, even now, stays with me, hearing as our very own for our Dad.

My husband and I visited Israel with a group from our synagogue in 2004...what a wonder it was to walk in the streets of Jerusalem! Hearing this song always takes me back to that incredible experience.
So nice to hear 2004 our daughter was born... I look foward to her making a trip now that she's 18...

I lived through the war (and the years before and after, was drafted to IDF 6 months later). I remember when this sing was first sung by the composer in a festival a few weeks before the war. I will never forget the electrifying reaction when the song was performed.
We sang this song as the bus we were in was entering Jerusalem. Very emotional moment.
Who can forget that incredible victory in just six days?! The prize was the Old City of Jerusalem and the Western Wall.

I was growing up in Israel at the time. I will never forget the nerve rack g year before the war. The festival that introduced what became the second Israeli anthem, I remember the mor I g of June 5 and every minute of the week of war. It was God’s will fulfilled.

My favorite You Tube segment. Love the Cantors. I was born in Amsterdam, immigrated as a very young child to the United States in 1956. My mother's family were Portuguese Jews, so I particularly love the setting. When this piece was recorded who would have imagined what has happened to our world. May this piece continue to be an inspiration in times like this.

It is all so perfectly clear to me when it comes to Israel, it is family, a shining light in the "Promised Land," and it is the promised land of the Jews, who are willing to share the land with people who do not want to do them ill, who want to bring the country up, not tear it down. G-d's Miracle in the desert. The more I read books about Israel, the more miraculous it all is, to have survived everything so far and thrived beyond all hope or reason. My father visited Israel before he passed and I will get there with my son some day, to see what the Lord has wrought in the Midst of her enemies. Israel now, Israel forever. Jurasalem of Gold!
