- Опубликовано: 7 июн 2024
- Charlie Price from the social enterprise Aquaponics UK, explores the role aquaponics can play in the future of our collective food supply.
He provides an insight into both the applications for aquaponics but more specifically a new approach to urban agriculture, turning wastes into resources and transforming disused urban spaces to provide not only food, but resilient communities.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark dep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) - Наука
Thank you for the excellent presentation. Developing innovative ideas such as this will be the only way, we will be able to overcome the challenges ahead.
great, wonderful lecture very insightful and easy to understand.....got some new ideas too...thanks...great job
Urban rooftops....heat from below captured....conserved. water from above captured conserved....food now created for each building saves transport energy and carbon dispersal from trucking.....this just is a small part of the future we can and need. Brilliant video Charlie. Thank you.
Excellent Charles...Thanks for being a valued member of the Aquaponics Gardening Community & Sharing
Charlie, you are such an inpiration! This was hands down the best presentation on the possibilities of aquaponics I've ever seen. In fact, it was the best presentation on aquaponics in general I've ever seen. Bravo!
An excellent presentation, well put together!
Thank you for being so proactive.
"What I'm proposing is that we explore our existing resources, we look at the buildings we have in urban spaces..."
YES! Great insight about the disconnect between what is now and the grand unrealistic visions of farming skyscrapers! Let's do PRACTICAL vertical aquaponics NOW.
Fantastic presentation ! we so need to embrace these ideas and convert them to the norm !
Well done! I have a small AP system, and you've just given me even more ideas for making it more efficient.
But more importantly you've provided a great video to explain to people what it is I'm doing and why (and hopefully why they might also).
AWESOME PRESENTATION THANKS SO MUCH!!!
Outstanding briefing. I'm volunteering at a teen center in Hawaii that has an aquponiic system donated to it. Only issue is that no one knows enough to maintain it to the best of its abilities. If I can receive guidance, I would apply it to my volunteer work and at home. Hopefully, I can get this idea to spread more on an island where land is limited.
Ted, you integrated everything really well, I am into what your doing here you got to keep going bro! Golden ideas.
Nicely done! Thank you. Steve.
Wonderful presentation. Thank you
that was GREAT! im so very happy I got to see this.
wonderful thing he is doing. great jobs!!
Aquaponics is the best farming method for sure!
Fabulous! Thank you for sharing.
this is beautiful, thanks man!
Excellent presentation. He has the heart and the mind to make a big difference in the world. I am a part of a group of people who want to do this sort of business also. I plan on reaching him to invite ways to collaborate.
Thank you.. for the great Video!!
For every pound of feed they extract 5 usable output stream, fish, worms, solider flies, vegetables and chickens. Each a highly valuable product in their own right.
great video. extremely interesting and insightful
@ Christoher Engleby
Other materials can be used such as marine grade fiberglass and stainless steel. There are also food grade plastics too (rain water tanks for an example).
Also Biochar
Aquaponics is the answer to alot of questions ... nice vid!
JT Bear ,
I LOVE IT!
Great Ted talk Charlie.
Can you explain a bit how you obtained funding and support for the Farm Shop project?
Awesome!!
We are doing this in our backyard in Sacramento, California. Easy and cheap to start.
Awesome ideas!
Why is this not on British Television?
Great thx for sharing
@stt60 pH swings aren't that sudden or that drastic unless you've got something going wrong. When first establishing a new system, while the beneficial bacteria are getting established, the pH gets rather high. It's common to start a system without fish or plants until this step is complete and it settles down. After that, a healthy system usually has a VERY slowly decreasing pH which you can buffer by keeping eggshells or oyster shells in the system. Weekly tests are sufficient.
Just decided to start aquaponics in the past month
I rather enjoyed his presentation. I would be interested in seeing how he gathered the funds necessary to secure and outfit his space.
There really is no reason for hunger to continue...We can do this!
this was all really cool =) really.
Of course, you want to work with your local authorities in any case. There are several types of Tilapia which are legal in my country (USA).
If I could see numbers and such, I would totally invest in something like that.
It is now 2018. How has the technology progressed? Is it working as well as it sounds?
I’m experimenting with a solar power air pump driving a small household system myself but will get results later in the year.
I am with the comment below me, this brings up a whole new issue about not evolving attitudes towards environment
Aquaponics Rocks!
Inspiring
Please do share some financial statistics of this methodology.
This is the future with out Montosano feeding everybody round-up poison. The cost to start is high like bottle neck, but the payoff is relatively fast and with high return. I believe the Mayans did it in large aquifer where they did you know what else too :/ and yes the tilapia eat that too. Wrapping this into an "eco-system" is the truest form I've ever thought of, one large efficiency sustainer.
but is there somewhere on the internet a list of all countries banning tilapia, that you know of?
Here in Canada pretty much any petshop with a good fish section should have them!
@Fwuzeem Loved the talk all the same though, my mind is racing with ideas! Are there tutorials on what to buy and how to setup with Aquaponics?
many, just look for them on youtube incase you are still interested
@@hunteronnen5000 you replied him after 7 years. 😂😂😂😂 the guy might even be dead. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
His presentation skills started off slow, but this is one of the most informative videos on Aquaponics. I've been looking for something to explain it to my dad and this wins. 1.2-1.5kg of fish good = 1kg of fish + 30-50kg vegetables. I knew it was efficient but damn that sums it up well.
Too bad he doesn't have numbers on the other outputs. I have a feeling the hydroponics room was an argument he lost. By all accounts aquaponics is superior to hydroponics in raw outputs and perceived outputs (flavor).
setite DIY aquaponics is currently creating buzz alongside commercial aquaponics. The term aquaponics may sound like it is out of your league but in fact, it is actually a fun way for you to start growing plants in your garden more efficiently. Watch this video here as it's all explained. Go here ==> aquaponicsdiy-new.blogspot.com/

setite Hydroponics alone still only uses 10% of the water that is needed by conventional farming and also increases the output by at least 50% (and more) in the same area.
So hydroponics is still a win in regards to saving water.
Sustainability is the future...
bravo I didn't know another bloke had a imagination like mine
#freelx
there are a lot of Aquaponics businesses popping up in Colorado. My issue with them is they have little to no accessibility to the public. I think Aquaponics is perfect vehicle for local community centers based on food. Everyone is welcome, information is free, a sense of pride in a community is built.
as long as children are kept away , as they tend to over feed the fish which can cause too much ammonia build up
It would be nice, the concept is sound, the practice is the hard part.
I find it absolutely jaw dropping that there could be fifty thumbs down on this wonderful program . Trying not to hate the haters....
LOLed for real. Great idea though. One of these systems needs to be in every home that can afford one. I have a partner that can build a system that will feed 4 adults for $400 including labor... A month of groceries?
With my experience with aquaponics for two summers you establish the system and it pretty much takes care of itself. Hydroponics is different you typically want a ph of about 5.5 to 6.5 this is unfortunately too low for your nutrient producer (fish). The big thing is the system feeds itself, if you do it correctly, you don't need to buy expensive nutrient systems which usually rely on fossil fuels. Like the person said before me its important you establish you bacteria first (nitrospira) first.
yep
I would exchange biomass incineration with geothermal heating
Still... 17 idiots with a thumbs down. They have the right to an opinion of course. Just a shame they do not base them in FACT.
Oh an do they have the prawns in the same tanks as the tilapia? Seems like the tilapia would eat them.
No need for `microfinancing`!
I built two systems for my one room apartment out of old discarded fish tanks I got for free from garbage piles and people I know; one is 100 liters!
One pump is broken but still can work enough for the small system, the other pump costs twenty bucks at a hard ware store (Fountain pump!) and is almost TOO powerful (lololol) and works great; the grow beds are water jugs with the sides cut out and set sideways with the nozzles turned upwards to allow more pooling!
it doesn't have to have large capital to start if you do it family size, check out barrelponics or rain gutter gardening, both are very easy to do and not never expensive to start, it if work for you grow your system, also not very expensive, these systems were designed to take into the poorest of countries and provide the people with fish, fruit and vegetables
old bathtubs are great too
I have a small home system I got from petco it's a aqua farm
Good
massmind.org at the page /techref/other/pond/TilapiaRaising has a lot more information about Tilapia and how to raise them, how to diagnose and treat any health problems they might have and links to sources for fry and small systems in the USA..
Can someone explain in detail why you cant feed the fish the maggots that fed on the fish bones, heads etc and have to add in the chickens?. I understood what he said but I don't understand the science of it. What does it matter what the maggots fed on? who knew there was such a thing as Animal Byproducts regulation?
Disease transmission.
If you move through several different species you minimise the possibility of disease organisms surviving to reinfect their host.
You should always try to work with your best local fish.
If you have chicken odors coming thru the windows...you missed the lessons taught by Master Cho ofS. Korea. No odors, no flies. Love what you shared....check out us olomanagardens com to see the system we build for urban dwellers.
Hey Charlie Price where's the methane production? Take the human, chicken poop, and plants to create another source of energy and a high quality fertilizer. The liquid could be dried using a solar still, you get clean water and either a moist sludge or dried fertilizer. Methane, its an (not the) answer to an energy short future. Adding a methane digester would close the loop even more keeping more inside the loop needing less input.
Incorporating Aquaponics into ghettos of America, would mean that there would be more jobs and learned skills. Damn, I’m going to make this possible one of these days. It’s a win-win situation.
why would Tilapia be banned? I'm a londoner and I have never heard of the fish. Is it tasty? They seem very small in the video. I think diversity is one of the things we need to bring in to creating local ecosystems. I try and eat local as much as possible but can't help but buy bananas and other imported products because of the taste.
They are effectively a pest.
catfish and tilapia may work better then prawns and tilapia
Catfish for the win. They'll clean their tank for you too.
Think the issue with catfish is that they need a different warmth of water if im correct.
i use Jade Perch and catfish, here in Australia, jade perch have the highest amount of omega than any other food source
Has anyone built a system like this?
Why not use nuclear to off set energy costs its safer and cheaper per unit of energy unit
Tilapia aren't great for providing omega3s, especially if they aren't fed well
AndysGeneral You can get your Omega-3's from the vegetables grown in the system. Spinach, Broccoli, Arugula, many different types of sprouts as well as some you can grow in organic soil beds like radishes. Radishes have a very fast finishing time to where you can get 10-12 harvests a year.
looks like great news for plastic companies... no options without plastic. As i understand uv light + plastic = toxic soup ...
you can use non toxic resin paint or pond liner, concrete, existing bodies of water or make a man made pond. no need for plastic in anything.
***** remeber reading that after you build a dam it raises mercury levels in the obstructed river for 30+ years ?
+Brad Haaf That's not the fault of concrete but of the dam blocking the path of mercury as it flows down river.
I don't believe such a list exists, and I'm not sure it would be a good idea in any case. Really, the best thing to do is to work with the local authorities... call them up or visit or email or mail them a letter and ask what the recommended species are and if there are any restrictions. Half of "working with" is letting them know what you are doing.
Right but they're not feeding the fish with fish carcasses, they're feeding the fish with black fly maggots.
do you know where there's a list of countries that ban tilapia? you wouldn't want to find out you've got a $25000 fine for growing them, just after you invested all your money into a project :P
use the fish for your area. Trout, bass, carp, silver perch, redfin, murray cod, sleepy cod, jade perch, koi even goldfish can be used
Dinozzo!
add on a lil alcohol production.
Maybe why tilapia are banned is because they are hardy and grow very well. like 'chicken'. Could easily overrun native populations. Thats why its important to rear fish in a closed loop system

Who doesn't like this?
If anyone is interested in aquaponics the greatest success that ive ever had was by using the Keiths Ponics Site (just google it) definately the best info that I've followed.
results time and energy per square foot..... enough of the BS!
It seems like re-inventing nature to me. But interesting... :)
he spent 21 minutes telling us what he was doing and trying to do.. with the assumption that those in the audience where aware what wasn't being done ..
7 people don't like captain planet
wonder if someone with little education and limited funds could make a living from this?
Of course we can !, just Google " D.I.Y. Aquaponics with Murray Hallam" , He is the pioneer of this technology and he explains everything I think he has like 3 decades making this systems!
Thank you kindly....
+Paco Morales I agree, Murray Hallam is a fountain of information based on experience that he communicates well to the viewer.
He is really fun to watch because of his passion for aquaponics.
Thanks for the video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (just google it)? It is a great one off guide for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my close friend Aubrey at last got great results with it.
te odioooo
A shame you don't have enough sun in the uk and have to heat the water for tropical fish, and use artificial light !!
..doesn't really make it that viable in my book.. stick to trout and growing mushrooms and the like..
biomass...smh. don't burn the tree man!
You need to grow some dope in that there aquaponic contraption
why would ypu want to grow alcohol ? for surely aclohol is dope as it turns people dopey , and worse , i grow Cannabis in mine and it works a treat , have never grown dope in it tho
These are much smaller systems and if many people had them infestations which would you would rarely even see could be quelled. How about the huge fish farms that are already disease infested? lol. Don't bash aquaponics bro, it will save the world.
God I hate that Breathing In Sound!
