As a point, eating less, is very likely to trigger the body lowering the metabolic rate. Which just means your body will use less energy then you are ingesting. This is a very generic example, as there are numerous factors within it that play a role. Chronic stress interferes with everything productive within the body. Including metabolism, digestion, immunology, and hormone balancing.

Nitrogen 78.08% Oxygen 20.947% Argon 0.934% Carbon dioxide 0.0350% When we exhale, the amount of oxygen is decreased by 4-5%, which is the amount our lungs transfer to the blood; and the carbon dioxide increases 4-5%, which is being removed from the blood. The other gases do not get utilized by the lungs, unless you have a malfunction. So, that part of the presentation is relevant. It ties into the importance of excercise, as we will increase the amount of carbon dioxide we are exhaling.

I take back my last comment. Took me 24-hours to process the sheer-genius of this man's talk - even woke up last night having dreams of Hydrogen and Carbon bonds. He also reminded me of a major "flaw/paradox" (problem) in our model(s) of how "bonds trap thermal energy" and such. Rewatching/rereading is one of the worst study methods, use good note taking, active recall and spaced repetition they're proved to work best, for active recall I recommend flashcards with spaced repetition systems, I personally use RemNote :)
This video is a Godsend! My husband is laying in a hospital on an ECMO machine that is supposed to help him expel CO2 after having had Covid but not doing such a great job of it. It’s great at oxygenating but not so great at removing CO2. The high CO2 makes him unconscious but I’m going to ask the dr if we can get him to sit and maybe move his legs and get him moving…idk if it will work but I’m going to try it. We got to “MOVE IT MOVE IT” to stay alive! Blessings to all of you out there!
Be careful - the advice in this video to move more does not apply to critically Ill patients who are on life support. The critical care specialists are carefully managing many many factors of his metabolism. If you are worried about his CO2 levels ask them to explain more. I’m so sorry you are going through such a difficult time.
@@susieomara1535 Yes, Thank you for your concern. He doesn’t have broken bones or anything like that that would cause any damage if he moved. I just had him do simple movements in bed like just paddling his feet and I bent his knees to a 90 degree angle and do some air kicks also in bed. He was getting tired of laying down so long. Actually, they had a PT team come in and stand him up then sit in a chair for a few hours. Did wonders for him. This builds up the muscles around the diaphragm that help the lungs inhale/exhale. It worked! He’s off the machine! Praise God! Ah, I also massaged his feet and legs and held his hand. Cannot underestimate the power of touch!

I've recently lost over 20 pounds and this really helps to explain it. Late at night, instead of snacking, I practice my golf swing, which makes me breathe heavier. Now it makes sense that standing still in my back garden and swinging clubs for a while is so healthy. I always walk a golf course, which yields about 7,000 steps over 9 holes, in addition to swinging clubs. All this breathing adds up.
India has a yogic breathing technique called Pranayama. You can look at it as an intensive breathing technique. Pranayama fits perfectly with the logic presented here. This man is a genius for being able to explain this concept in such simple terms.
Indians knew it centuries before science was able to explain it. In India when we learn Yoga, we are told that deep breathing helps you. Lose weight. Science now is only connecting the dots. India knew through astrology that sun is centre of solar system. West arrived there much later. So on for so many things

He talks about carbon dioxide as a by-product of metabolism but doesn't talk at all about the rate of metabolism. He assumes everyone has the same rate of metabolism. Granted he needs to simplify. But the metabolic rate is important to talk about. A high metabolic rate is more important than eating less. It uses more calories and provides more energy. And rather than eat less, one has to improve one's metabolism so that it produces more energy to support his health, and not only health, but his development. Energy made is used first to support immediate needs in support of his survival, the extra is used to build his immunity and to repair and/or replace/rebuild tissues and organs, and when there's still energy left, it goes toward development in intelligence and in appearance - the brain, the skin, and hair. When the author says to eat less, he is only thinking about losing or maintaining a normal weight, but he isn't concerned about fully developing the individual.
And that one's ability to metabolize food energy decreases as we age, and that not everyone's endocrinal system operates exactly the same way, or "perfectly".

As a professor in psychology, I whole heartedly agree that our educational system isn't working. Any age group for the most part can get basic concepts, you have to adapt how you teach them. I viewed this fellows Ted talk years ago and enjoyed it. Now I'm thrilledfor his follow up.

The last two weeks I'm holding a calendar with all my food and movements in order to lose weight. 'Eat less, move more and keep breathing'. From 100,6 Kg to 97,2 Kg in just two weeks and man...I'm eating normal things but modest portions. Also I move more and that's just such a great feeling. Like the man said, "We know that its as simple as eat less and move around more but, we don't want to listen". I've known it all my life and been slim until now. My work causes me to comfort eat and the nature of the job means I don't get to move around (so much kinder than the word, exercise don't you think?) as much as I like to. Hence, I'm a stone over, my ideal weight. This man has persuaded me to eat less, which means, not eating at night, when I finish work. Breaking down the meaning of the formulas of what goes in and what comes out, makes me wish my family had been able to send me to a good school, where the standard of teaching may have been better....what am I driveling on about. ....Great job, Mate. K 1 second ago I'm a Texan and was introduced to all of it in fourth grade. Private schools do a much better job here. Public schools across the U.S. are often educating their kids according to the slowest kid in the room, but it depends on the socioeconomic level of the neighborhood/district. Rich kids in public schools rely on tutoring as to not slow an entire class down. Poor kids (usually in the cities or very poor rural areas) in public schools have little help at home and tutoring is rare. (stereotypically).

This is brilliant. We often view weight gain and loss as such a complex topic but in reality it's quite simple. Letting us visualise a meal in terms of hours of breathing is such a unique way to help people understand the energy density of the food they are eating. With the examples of the fast food meal being a full 24 hours to expend from the body, we can see why consistent intake of these high energy foods results in weight gain, since there are more atoms entering the body than being exhausted! Well done Ruben.
Wow I heard about this many years ago. A new study had found that the secret to weight loss was actually breathing. At that time I wondered that the fact that we exercise more makes breathe more and more deeply was what actually made the quicker weight loss happen but I never heard anything about it again so I thoguht it was just one of those new fad theories. This explains it perfectly, it's great. It's much easier to control what you put in your body once you understand the mechanisms of biochemistry. Really good
Years ago from his first talk I went keto. I eat mostly vegetables and meat 🥩, I lost 100 lbs and my blood work in all areas became impeccable. I’m a strong beast 💪 ever since and all I did was lower my daily carbs to 30g or less. Problem is... people don’t want to give up carbs even though that’s the true scientific way to go Savage Beast Mode Healthy 💪!!!!

I knew it! I need to sleep more because I'm breathing when I sleep but not eating. I'm going to sleep all day! Great to hear this topic explained scientifically and what a cool guy promoting it and teaching it in schools. When we experience trama, even drama, our breathing is affected. Often we end up holding our breath at some point as a reflex to get through the traumatic situation. We clench as a result and hold ourselves up with our muscles or soft tissue rather than our natural skeletal, ligament, muscle combination. Then muscle memory gets linked to the situation and our body can get triggered by many things and we subconsciously return to what got us through the original episode and the loop of PTSD kicks in. Self medicating is often part of traumatic situations, which makes the recovery harder.
This is an awesome talk! Very easy to understand. Leaves me wanting to know more, too. People who increase muscle size through strength training increase their metabolism, so even days they aren’t exercising at all they will burn more calories than they did when they had less muscleーare they breathing more as a result? If so, what’s the mechanism? Does more muscle make for deeper breathing, higher lung capacity or such without us even realizing? I’m so curious about how energy works with breathing and also movement and muscle function now.
Jimmy Buffett has a song "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On" which is advice on dealing with difficult situations/people. Now I know it is also the key to weight loss.

It's a fun talk, and very instructional. I like this perspective. At the same time, it doesn't solve the problem that it's aiming to solve: the core of the issue is the psychology around eating more or eating less, moving more or moving less. Of course eating less and moving more leads to losing weight, but only by understanding why people don't do that even if they know that's what needs to be done, that we can help them. It's not by simply knowing what's right that we apply what's right... there's more to it: it's called psychology, habits, bodily sensations. We need to learn to handle those, in order to be able to apply the simple knowledge of this video.

As a professor in psychology, I whole heartedly agree that our educational system isn't working. Any age group for the most part can get basic concepts, you have to adapt how you teach them. I viewed this fellows Ted talk years ago and enjoyed it. Now I'm thrilledfor his follow up.
The connection of our body with food has been explained here in such a simple way but with such depth and clarity. Wonderful lecture. Highly educational and beneficial. I am passing this on to friends and family.
He did such an amazing job at explaining something that often times can be seen as complex. This was very interesting. The photo of him surfing was really awesome that I didn’t even notice his belly until he said something and that’s what inspired this whole thing! Amazing. Did anyone else breathe deeply throughout this whole Ted talk?

Eat less, move more...and keep breathing. That's great info for all of the people that were not breathing before watching this video, or were planning to stop breathing as part of their diet. In other words, we are back where we started - eat less and move more.

More and more I'm convinced that THIS IS the method to stay in shape and to stay healthy.
I've watched this video a lot and also your other videos.
The last two weeks I'm holding a calendar with all my food and movements in order to lose weight.
'Eat less, move more and keep breathing'.
From 100,6 Kg to 97,2 Kg in just two weeks and man...I'm eating normal things but modest portions.
Also I move more and that's just such a great feeling.
This movement should become bigger and bigger!

Sooooooo, teach kids to eat 3 small ice creams (with inflammatory dairy and sugar and weird thickeners/gums that mess with the gut's lining) each day instead of organic produce and clean proteins with the same calorie count as the ice cream because nutrition is about calories not actual nutritive value??? Brilliant! An easy-to-understand explanation. Watched it twice then forwarded the link to a bunch of people. Fascinating that doctors don't know this. But then, I asked a doctor about gluconeogenesis and she looked at me blankly. I left mid-consult and never went back.

As a chemist I love to see stoichiometry discussed in such an amusing and relevant way. BTW this is covered in the first semester of general chemistry.
Like the man said, "We know that its as simple as eat less and move around more but, we don't want to listen". I've known it all my life and been slim until now. My work causes me to comfort eat and the nature of the job means I don't get to move around (so much kinder than the word, exercise don't you think?) as much as I like to. Hence, I'm a stone over, my ideal weight.
This man has persuaded me to eat less, which means, not eating at night, when I finish work. Breaking down the meaning of the formulas of what goes in and what comes out, makes me wish my family had been able to send me to a good school, where the standard of teaching may have been better....what am I driveling on about.

I'm a Texan and was introduced to all of it in fourth grade. Private schools do a much better job here. Public schools across the U.S. are often educating their kids according to the slowest kid in the room, but it depends on the socioeconomic level of the neighborhood/district. Rich kids in public schools rely on tutoring as to not slow an entire class down. Poor kids (usually in the cities or very poor rural areas) in public schools have little help at home and tutoring is rare. (stereotypically).

This is brilliant. We often view weight gain and loss as such a complex topic but in reality it's quite simple. Letting us visualise a meal in terms of hours of breathing is such a unique way to help people understand the energy density of the food they are eating. With the examples of the fast food meal being a full 24 hours to expend from the body, we can see why consistent intake of these high energy foods results in weight gain, since there are more atoms entering the body than being exhausted!

Wow I heard about this many years ago. A new study had found that the secret to weight loss was actually breathing. At that time I wondered that the fact that we exercise more makes breathe more and more deeply was what actually made the quicker weight loss happen but I never heard anything about it again so I thoguht it was just one of those new fad theories. This explains it perfectly, it's great. It's much easier to control what you put in your body once you understand the mechanisms of biochemistry. Really good

Years ago from his first talk I went keto. I eat mostly vegetables and meat 🥩, I lost 100 lbs and my blood work in all areas became impeccable. I’m a strong beast 💪 ever since and all I did was lower my daily carbs to 30g or less. Problem is... people don’t want to give up carbs even though that’s the true scientific way to go Savage Beast Mode Healthy 💪!!!!

Great to hear this topic explained scientifically and what a cool guy promoting it and teaching it in schools. I suspect eating less and moving more will also help with stress, depression, and heaps of other modern issues. Just getting out of the house is beneficial.

When we experience trama, even drama, our breathing is affected. Often we end up holding our breath at some point as a reflex to get through the traumatic situation. We clench as a result and hold ourselves up with our muscles or soft tissue rather than our natural skeletal, ligament, muscle combination. Then muscle memory gets linked to the situation and our body can get triggered by many things and we subconsciously return to what got us through the original episode and the loop of PTSD kicks in. Self medicating is often part of traumatic situations, which makes the recovery harder.

This is an awesome talk! Very easy to understand. Leaves me wanting to know more, too. People who increase muscle size through strength training increase their metabolism, so even days they aren’t exercising at all they will burn more calories than they did when they had less muscleーare they breathing more as a result? If so, what’s the mechanism? Does more muscle make for deeper breathing, higher lung capacity or such without us even realizing? I’m so curious about how energy works with breathing and also movement and muscle function now.

Jimmy Buffett has a song "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On" which is advice on dealing with difficult situations/people. Now I know it is also the key to weight loss.

And sad to see that many ppl spend lots and lots of money for weight loss. Actually they bcm more weak anemic. Hair loss. Only solution is eat correct qty food which is necessary for your daily activities. Every person is different from another. There is no one common food diet which goes for every one. This dude literally blew my mind in less than 8 mins.
It's a fun talk, and very instructional. I like this perspective. At the same time, it doesn't solve the problem that it's aiming to solve: the core of the issue is the psychology around eating more or eating less, moving more or moving less. Of course eating less and moving more leads to losing weight, but only by understanding why people don't do that even if they know that's what needs to be done, that we can help them. It's not by simply knowing what's right that we apply what's right... there's more to it: it's called psychology, habits, bodily sensations. We need to learn to handle those, in order to be able to apply the simple knowledge of this video.
This guy put it in a genius way and simplified it for anyone and everyone to understand, thats genius IMO.
