In this video I show the basic procedure used to check if an alternator/generator is charging a battery, demonstrated on a Massey Ferguson 135, 12 volt system.
This procedure can be used on both 12 and 24 volt charging systems on either an alternator or generator. All you need is a multimeter or a test light that can read voltage. Test the charge by putting your chosen testing device between the positive out let on the alternator/generator and a good earth such as engine block or chassis then with the engine running check the volts being produced. This procedure will give you an accurate measurement of the charge you should be receiving at the battery and can aid in further diagnosis of a faulty charging system.
Disclaimer, I may be a qualified mechanic but I hold the right make it up as I go and am not held responsible for issues arising from advise given in these videos. All mechanical repairs should be carried out by qualified professional.

Thanks for the video. It's good to see you using a quality DVM to test equipment. My (non import) DVM scrambles digits anywhere near my generator.

Very practical and helpful. BTW, you could use the 20 VDC range and get a little more accuracy, but certainly your way works just fine. Thank you.

Mate, did you replace the generator? I have a similar problem with my Massey Ferguson, the genny is only pumping out 2.6v. Thanks

Yes I did end up putting a new one on it

You can test gen as follows, disconnect arm and field wires, w gen spinning jump F to ground or
ARM if there are no sparks and gen does not load down, residual field is GONE and field must be flashed b4 she puts out, I mean the generator.

usually you just bridge the gap at the starter. beware this sparks and eats away at the screwdriver

Hi great video my tractor wont charge my battery been like it for couple of years i checked it today i noticed no wire going from alternator to battery would that cause it

There will be a wire going to a voltage regulator I would inspect all the wiring and make sure there's no breaks

You need to start your videos with "Hey you big, beautiful bastards, here's me face" like Ozzy Man Reviews. Then mention something about Dingo's and baby's.

Hey there if I have a 6v battery on my tractor (a farmall) what should that read? The battery reads about 9-10 but The generator reads at roughly 0.9 I am assuming my generator is shot?

There are two types of genz. A style has field coming off the Amature terminal. B style, one side of
the field is grounded and must be hookt to armature to get field to magnetize field poles and Gen
    will put out.

    Greetings,
alternators to some extent work different than generators, if you have a generator, which you do,
it will charge even when the battery is dead, an alternator will NOT do that. reason being you
need a little bit of electricity in the battery to excite the alternator's rotating field winding.
That gen you have is an internally exciting machine and requires no external current to get it to charge the battery. If the gen is not putting out proper voltage, there could be a grounded
armature or field winding. The gen can lose its residual field and may need to have its field
flashed. If you can put 12 volts+
