Thanks for this! I was following LibreOffice's tutorial on this, but only got to the point where I had the template and filler without showing the actual address data in the fields. I eventually figured out that in the most recent version, rather than your steps described with the Mail Merge Wizard at 3:05, you must now choose the "Edit Individual Documents" button along the bottom-left of the top toolbar. This will open a new document which has all of the address data visible.
VERY IMPORTANT TIP. Since LibrOffice likes to progressively crowd the left edge of the labels and in fact runs off on the labels in the right column, I deployed a blunderific work around. I added spaces as needed during field selection to push the addresses to the right.
Very helpful. There's been a minor change since this was made. The options to print or save to file are now only on the toolbar, and you will not see the final merged file until you do one or the other. I think it is also often necessary to add a blank line at the top as well as a space to the left. Also it is possible to copy data from a spreadsheet and paste it into Base. Base is a separate installation from standard LibeOffice. sudo apt-get install libreoffice-base
This video is one of the best step-by-step instructions on a software program I have the good fortune of viewing. I'm not sure why LibreOffice has made it so cumbersome to use a simple label program, but I appreciate your help. Bravo!
You are amazing. Every year I struggle with Libra. My computer guy put it on and said I did not need Microsoft. Definitely not user friendly. Thank you for posting.
YOU ARE THE BEST ... I just created table in the LibreOffice....with 100 of addresses .. and thank to you ..I should be able to print out the labels.....I am NOT - the f4 has different message "Save changes to document “Untitled 1” before closing?" .....now I clicked on VIEW and Data Sources...and there is the window with my Document I like to merge with .... clicking on the Tool and I have different info in the new window ....only 1/ select starting document 2/ select doc. type 3/ insert address block 4/ create salutation 5/ adjust layout ( in grayish color) ...missing 6,7,and 8 ...and after going through all 5 steps - no success - do not see THE change/merge on the document on the screen ... any idea what to try next ? Also ... What "IF" ... I would like to print out just some of the whole database of addresses - is there an option to select few out of the whole database ? Thank you for your precious time
So, your tutorial seems straight forward, but i keep getting stuck on the part where you say to hit F4. I don't get what you do and can't seem to get it to work past this step. Please help!
Thanks for the tutorial. It helps much when I print labels. Only I thought there was a way to populate the information in the fields before printing the document. I would be more helpful if it were possible. Thanks
Oh nice. I didn't even know libreoffice could do this. One less thing windows is needed for. The list sure is getting shorter. We really need a good pdf editor. That is the only thing I can think of that's left for me.
What if I need to pack much more information on those labels? like 3 columns per row, spaced, font edited, maybe some image? I've dabbled in macros in LibreOffice, problem then is to fit every cartouche on the labels A4 sheet.. Has anyone done something like that?
I was doing well until I get to where it creates a new database and to select the spreadsheet and it doesn't recognize my spreadsheet. The space where I am select the spreadsheet is blank and won't open up anything. ???
From 3:13... "hit F4"... this begins to fall apart. F4 does nothing, the wizard suggests that I'm setting up a letter template to import my list into, and when I print my labels the preview prints.
It must have changed again. Figured out it was Ctrl + Shift + F4. There is also an icon that looks like a stack of pancakes at the bottom of the tool bar that will do the same.
You just showed me how to print a page of barcodes! I have been working on this for 4 hours, starting at Avery .com and going to Tec-It .com and ending up here. Thank you so much!!!!!
Kris, they are DONE! Woo-Hoo!!!! Now I get to put my product on Amazon for sale! I wish RUclips had a happy smiley with music for this comment. :) :) If you know anyone who needs to purchase a UPC code for anything, send them to barcodestalk. com. $5 for one, $10 for five different barcodes. Images are included. I'm happy with them. I almost bought them from eBay, but in Amazon Seller Central forums, I read where sellers had done that, and Amazon had denied them the use of that UPC code. That led to further research. Turns out that some of the eBay UPC codes are not correct. Barcodestalk buys their codes directly from the licensing company, in bulk. from GS1 - the Global Standards Organization. That's probably a WHOLE LOT MORE that you wanted to hear, but it's good for people to know. So thank you for allowing me to use your comments area to inform. You have just performed a valuable public service, and we salute you! ;) ;) (really need a big smiley but like I said earlier....)
Nice tutorial Im new to Libre you did very good job step by step limited BS.. I rewound it a few times but easy as pie! thanks man keep up the good work.
This doesnt help. I just want to print one label for an envelope. I have a hard time writing. There has to be a simple way. I wish I still had a typewriter.
I kept getting lost at various points, like taking the wrong turning down a country lane.. Still not quite there.. No labels yet. . I suspect things have changed or there is a glitch somewhere.. That Wizard seems to have lost his powers to make Labels :-) This definitely isn't working. Sad. I wish they still produced Dynodex for address labels.. ...
Ermagerd! File > New > Labels ! ! ! - I spent the better part of an hour just trying to find out how to make a new blank document of an Avery Label Template. I just switched to Zorin because I am so disappointed in the constant errors I get with Windows. It's going to take some getting used to the new layout of the menus but It's already been worth it. The top quality open source software is going to save me a bundle of money and also time that I used to spend repairing windows errors.
Yes I am learning that! not the easy way either. I get a list of names and addresses and phone numbers from a volunteer group in a pdf file. then I have to turn it into a spreadsheet and then into a database and into labels- ugh- just thinking there had to be an easier way- none of us are extremely computer literate- plus they use windows and Im on Linux...
Mistie Fitzgerald Basically, you don't convert a PDF into a spreadsheet. You'll have to grab text from the PDF and use it to create a spreadsheet. But, if the PDF's aren't all formatted the same you can't really do this. If you do get them into a spreadsheet, then you should be able to put them into a database easily. Most spreadsheet programs will export to csv, and more database programs can import csv files.
Once a year I do the labels for my wine, once a year I need this to show me how to print labels.
Thank you!

This hint's a winner. Much better than trying to adjust the margins.
Once a year sounds right!!! Our company does the same thing. You’re awesome, many thanks!
You can't imagine how much time this saves me year after year. Great job and thank you!
Sorry, But in the new versions on LO it doesn't work this way anymore

You restored my sanity, many thanks for an excellent tutorial.
Glad I could help.
Perfect! This is exactly what I needed. The help wiki just wasn't answering the critical "create a database" step for me. :)
Chris thanks a lot for this tutorial. It's very clear and easy to follow!
if you get almost done but can't see the names of your friends, click on "edit individual documents"... that worked for me.

Really helpful, concise and to the point. Thank you!
Followed the directions. My Mail Merge Wizard stops at "5. Adjust layout" and it is also greyed out. No 7. or 8. to be able to Save Starting Document?
I have used LibreOffice for years but probably only use a fraction of its features. Nice video!
Super-helpful for our holiday postcards! Thanks so much!
Kris, this tutorial help me maintain my sanity! Thanks!!!
happy it helped.
Thank you This is the first time making labels not using my Works 5 program. I did it just the way your video showed. Now I can get a new computer.
So, your tutorial seems straight forward, but i keep getting stuck on the part where you say to hit F4. I don't get what you do and can't seem to get it to work past this step. Please help!
Control f4
I'm stuck on this step as well and control f4 only closes my document. Please help!
thanks for sharing, very helpful, got me through the worst of it, definitely not a smooth process though! it was ugly but it's done
Thanks for the tutorial. It helps much when I print labels. Only I thought there was a way to populate the information in the fields before printing the document. I would be more helpful if it were possible. Thanks

How can you print just one label like I could in MS.
YO!! That was so helpful!!! Trying to wedding stuff and it was killing me! Thank you!!
Well, Congrats on the Wedding, if it's your wedding that is. :)

I had to use control + f4

It must have changed again. Figured out it was Ctrl + Shift + F4. There is also an icon that looks like a stack of pancakes at the bottom of the tool bar that will do the same.

Great tutorial. I would not manage without it. Thanks!
This was a big help...Thank you!!

this is very helpful. Can you please post a video of how to turn a pdf file into a spreadsheet on Linux Ubuntu? thank you!
pdf file into a spreadsheet? It can be done, but it would very from pdf to pdf. spreadsheets and pdfs are completely different things.
Yes I am learning that! not the easy way either.
