  • So I got my oil changed at the Infiniti dealer last week. I decided to compare the cost on the invoice to the cost of doing it myself. The results will surprise you.

2015 Subaru Outback, 5.1qt. crankcase. I use the 5Qt. Jug of Quaker State 0/20 (holds onto the QS best) at $23, the Tokio Roki Mazda RX8 filter ( same specs and fit as the Subaru) for $8 and every other oil change the $1.50 washer. Oil change intervals are 4,500 miles.
It is so easy because the filter is on top and can be removed without tools, and easy access with a 17mm socket tool to the drain plug. The dealer charges $129 and 10.5% tax added.

If the filter is on top, I'd use a suction pump and you wouldn't even have to get under the car.

I do my own oil changes primarily because I don't trust the oil change techs at the dealerships. You do have to buy some supplies/tools but the cost is divided by the number of oil changes that you end up doing. If your vehicle is under warrantee keep receipts and meticulous records in the event the dealer questions your maintenance regarding a warrantee claim.

A friend of mine paid the dealer to change his spark plugs. They put the wrong plugs in the car and it blew the engine up. The dealer said that according to the paperwork they put the right plugs in, no liability.

I always used to do my own oil changes but got into letting the dealer do it. One time I took my F150 in and they put the wrong viscosity in and had to change it again 2 - 25 mile trips. Then I took my 18 Mustang in and they put in 8.5 qts - that’s what the 17 and older takes. The 18 takes 10 qts. I checked it as soon as I got home and topped it off. Since then I’m back to doing my own. They don’t give a crap if they cost you an engine - I do care.

Wow, 124 bucks for an oil change? I thought my Ford dealer was high at 64 bucks. I could possibly do my own oil changes, but when it's single digit temperatures outside I don't even want to mess with it freezing my butt off.

It's going to be 1 degree here in Ky this week. One singular degree. I'm glad I have a garage with a propane tube heater.

I’ve done mine in the snow already but it was a pickup so I didn’t need to jack it up - just drive on a couple 1x8 cutoffs. When it’s cold you work fast.

$124 for an oil change. That’s twice if what I pay at the local oil change place.
