- For the last 27 years, Metrolink's fleet of F59PH locomotives has dutifully carried passengers throughout the greater Los Angeles region. Now, after many years of service, the F59PH and F59PHI locomotives are being replaced by the new EMD F125. Let's go back and look at the F59s in action one final time as they finish off their careers in Metrolink service. We'll also take a look at Metrolink 800, the lone F40PH in the fleet, that has also been retired.
CoasterFan2105 is the home of all sorts of train and railroad related video content. Stop by every Friday at 9 AM Pacific time for an all new railroading adventure and be sure to check out all of my social media pages @coasterfan2105 for even more great railroad content. Thanks, and I'll see you down the line!
Great content as always, Mike! Love the San Clemente shots.
I ,
I grew up watching F59Ph and F59PHI locomotives, they were part of my childhood. I use to drive to a railroad crossing all the time just to see these locomotives in action on Metrolink and Amtrak Surfliner routs. I'm gonna miss these guys but I understand why they are retiring, hopefully at least one or two of these F59 locomotives will be purchased for railroad museums in the future, they are a part of passenger railroading history and they deserve to be alive. I'm still hoping for the day that America will finally bring high speed rail to our country. Great video by the way, keep up the good work.
Your Memorial-Legacy will Never be Forgotten Forever, Metrolink F59 Locomotive. We'll Never Forget You. God Bless You Again. Amen. ( U _ U )
Sad to see CalTrains SoCal cousins go. Especially their horns (P2). I haven’t been on one, but I have seen them up close. Farewell F59 and F59PHI. You will be missed dearly forever in the railroad community.
I love F59's. A few of them were put back into service because the F125's kept crudding out. RIP to 800. I was young and just watched the trains instead of filming them, but now I'm older and filming them, and it's too late. A truly remarkable era is slowly coming to a close. I feel like that 2020 kids are gonna be sad when the F125's retire. As a kid I would always watch the F59's and a couple times see the F40.
Well, F59PHRs 852, 856 868 and 873 replaced the role of F40PH SCAX 800 as Metrolink's new "Tow Trucks"
@@dennisthebrony2022 Correct. We’re lucky to have them. Bringing back some old memories
I just saw one of them pulling an f125 today
The irony of that is crazy because f125 locomotives are supposed to be good but they don’t seem to be
Rest In Peace, Metrolink f59 Locomotive.

I really love the F59’s btw
At Least Metra And Go Trans Still Has F59’s
@@kyleholbrook1288 not just metra and Go, Exo has them too and they will be retiring them probably in the next 10 years
I'm gonna miss Metrolink #800. It was always my favorite loco.
There's a movement to have the F40PH preserved.
Yep
I saw the F59s when I went to LA twice. It's sad that they're being retired.
And scrapped
Metra doesn’t want them?
@@Trainlover1995 metra might not want them because they're relying more on their cringey Mp36s
@@hamtrak_p42dcamtrak67 not all of them. If they scrap them I’ll scrap the scrappers
I rode on metrolink on a school fieldtrip and there was a F59
Idalwave 64 where did u go on your school field trip
Me to
Really cool!
I wish I was able to do that.
Nice!
Welp, it's the end of the EMD 2 Stroke era. All hail the era of the 4 stroke. It's gonna be funny to talk to younger railfans about the thrill of being trackside and hearing the whine of a 645 or 710 at notch 8.
Oh wow these locomotives go way back. It was nice seeing these locos with 3751.
Thanks for documenting their final runs.
Glad I got to see a few of these last summer both streamlined and non streamlined during my summer job at the LA Union Station
Cool that you filmed in riverside! That's my home. I've actually seen a Metrolink F59PHI shortly before their retirement there
My favourite locomotives from Metrolink has finally came to an end. Sad, but not forgotten.
Great video. Metrolink 852 is my favorite F59ph
Thank you! Mine was 860.
Sad to see these locomotives go. Great catches.
I know they were my other favorite kind of LOCOMOTIVES but I don't like to see them go,sad react
Metra has some and they rebuilt them
How does Metra still use f40s and f59s if they don’t have then best emission standards does Metra have a lot of money to rebuild them?
Nice catches Mike! My buddy Jim worked for Metrolink from 1992 up until his retirement in 2014. He ran all of those locomotives, including 800. 800 was a bad run because they threw a monitor right in the middle of the cab, and the engine loaded slow and whatnot. But he liked the F59s.
It always saddens me when locomotives get retired. They show up for work every day and then when they become a little less efficient then the new stuff they get fired.
I’ve only been to California once, I hope to go back soon, and i’m saddened to see an iconic locomotive of the Metrolink commuter rail go into the history books. But, I’m glad I saw three of them before their retirement (851, 870, 874). Although not many people like or have interest in the new F125, in my opinion they’re a good replacement, I hope to see how good they will perform as the new face of Metrolink.
Have a Nice AfterLife in Railroad-Heaven, Metrolink F59 Locomotive. We're Gonna Miss You. And We'll Always Remember You Forever and Ever. God Bless You. ( U _ U )
I grew up in Laguna Niguel growing up in the 2000s I saw these things go by ALL the time
I thought Metrolink will be keeping the rebuilts for a few more years what a shame. These were so cool and my childhood favorite, farewell my F59 Friends I had fun going on trip with you Everytime I rode the train.
Seeing these videos of metrolink F59s is just nostalgic at this point
as a kid for some reason, i always saw metrolink like a sibling to trinity railway express because not only did they both use the same locomotive and passenger car designs, but they almost had similar color themes. but now that the f59ph’s and f59phi’s are being retired and they have a newer color theme, i can’t see metrolink the same way anymore. i also wished i started learning about locomotive designs way earlier.
I honestly almost cried when I heard they were going out of service. My first train trip was with a F59ph and it had a great P2 Horn.
Metrolink: Man, we really need to retire these old-
Metra: *Hello.*
Anyone with a brain: DUDE!
Metrolink: WHY DID YA INTERRUPT MY CONVERSATION!?
Metra: I wanted to buy these locomotives.
Metrolink: Oh ok but don’t interrupt me ever again.
Metra: Ok.
Don't worry Metra won't be getting these garbage locomotives with their trash horns. You guys can watch your f59's get scrapped.
Ricky Rodriguez Can’t beat the secondary K5LA horn on the locos
@Amrep dude499 They removed them from all F59PHRs in January.
RIP to the F59PHIs on both Amtrak and Metrolink, and the F59PHs from Metrolink... Grew up riding them... So sad to see those go :(
They should be sold to a different commuter rail or donated to a railroad museum
Metrolinx still has them lol
Super informative. Thanks! Great job!
Great catch of F40PH number 800!
Excellent footage I really enjoyed watching & I just subscribed 😎👍
Saw them once in LA when i visited, sad to see them go. First the toasters, f59phi and now the Metrolink f59
Next, the p42dc
Fantastic Video!!!!!!!!! Im really sad to see the F59s go :( I really hope they get sold to Railroad Museums for Future generations to enjoy!!
Maybe one or two will go to a museum
IM NOT CRYING. YOURE CRYING.
On a serious note though, rip these two loco’s. They are some of my all time favorite commuter locomotives. I grew up with them. They are both gorgeous locomotives. The only stupid part about the f125 is it never reaches its top speed. Same applies to the sc44 charger. Unless metrolink and Amtrak have plans to raise speed limits for both trains.
That's not their decision, that's federal regulations.
UTAFan 01 just saying. If they are capable of going that speed, wouldn’t metrolink want to use it to their advantage
852, 856, and 868 are still in service along with 851 as a switcher at the CMF.
@Amtrak fan 455 Yes, 851 is still a CMF Taylor switcher.
I miss these locomotives :( I remember seeing it in January 2020. I didn’t know that would me my last time seeing it ):
I think it would be nice to see some F59’s on Metra Railroad. (If they buy them)
No, NO NO NO. metra doesn't need these.
Thanks Mike for differences between the 2 versions.
rode on the last consist with one yesterday, on the Orange County line to Oceanside, the 6 40 train. I now regret riding in the cab car to try and charge my phone, but there was no power in the outlets. I shouldve moved to the front car behind the F59, just to hear an actual P2 one last time since those awful K2s are now all that will be heard.
Great seeing camarillo as a Ventura County Resident.
would you ever do a second train meets and races video?
Yea I’m subscribing, this is great quality!
I love the old metrolink locomotives
Me too
*Hope a few of thoze F59PH are saved? Great sound! There has to be somebody out there willing to save a few for future generations to see, like plenty of F9s, etc. still around...*
This is almost the exact same thing as Amtrak retired all of their F59PHI locomotives. Really miss them :(
At least those ones are still running in Metra service, which is where the Metrolink ones should go, too.
It was good to see them while they were here!
Amtrak California still runs f59phis up north and in North Carolina
Awesome video
Thank you!
CoasterFan2105 Metrolink is rebuilding the 2 non rebuilding F59PHs and F59PHIs. Also Metrolink is sending the rest of the non rebuilt F59PHs and F59PHIs to different commuter rails. The rest of the Non rebuild F59PHs are going to Sounder Transit, Tri Rail, and VRE. The F59PHs on the GO Transit paint are going to West Coast Express. F59PH 18533 doesn’t belong to Metrolink, F59PH 18533 is on the Mi Train paint and it’s going to the Steam Railroading Institute for the ongoing constructions of the Mi Train stations and it will operate and run excursions including the North Pole Express with PM 1225 and GLC 395. Some of the Metrolink F59PHIs are going to Tri Rail, Frontrunner, railrunner, North Star, VRE, ACE, and AMT Montreal
So sad to see them go, but at least some will still serve at Taylor Yard and some will be running on the Piedmont!
Love your videos!
Awesome video Mike! We really looking forwards for the next Metrolink videos! Great work! From my Family! Also one question: will the streamlined nose ones retire too?
I got on Amtrak California and there was a EMD F59PHI. Anyways I’m gonna miss them.
I’m going to miss F59 locomotives
I just wanted to let you know Mr. Armstrong that you are my 4-year-old son's hero. He looks forward to Friday every week for your videos. He insists that he'll live on an Amtrak train one day!
All PHIs except for CalTrans 2010-15 order only have one red marker light, the other is an emergency flasher-basically a red strobe light for emergencies.

I will never forget about them i always wanted to see them in person sadly i couldnt i heard some of the f59phis can be rebuild hopefully it turns out true and i loved them a lot :)
I mean go transit has some F59PH in toronto but is rarely seen. It was used for the Niagara Falls express
My last Metrolink line I went on, the PVL/91 line had an F59PHI.
Rest in heaven F59PH locos, we love you and miss you
I always got interested in the old Metrolink engines sucks there all gone now :(
As of 2020 four f59ph locomotives stay operational are 852, 856, 868 and 873.
I grew up seeing these metrolink locomotives in action
Despite their age, they will always be more trustworthy than the F125's. They also look so much better than any other locomotive on the Metrolink roster. I got to see 857 in person one last time earlier this year at Downtown Burbank and hear the gorgeous EMD 710 rev up. What exactly is going to happen to them because many are on the common page that they aren't going to scrap yet but no one agrees as to where they are going to be sold off to.
A wet leaf on the track can shut down the traction motors on an F125.
F125 is the dollar store version of the SC44, I never liked f125’s
RIP the Metrolink F59's. I saw them only twice, but they were in their final days then.
8:25 chatsworth was where one of the worst trains wrecks in the United States happened, when an metrolink train crashed head on collided with an union Pacfic freight train and it was both the worst train wreck in metrolink's history and the worst in the United States since the 1993 big Bayou disaster.
Rest in Peace to that F59PH that was scrapped after the wreck.
I don’t get why eight 884-887 were taken out of service so quickly because they entered service around 2004! While 883 suffered in HEP failure! I caught 3002 today! I also caught 881 shortly before it was taken out of service!
884-7 were retired due to the pandemic, 882-883 are also in the same category as them, and will probably get rebuilt.
A Very Random Person 883 was retired a long time ago and maybe 882 will come back, but that is probably it
Why would it be retired because of a pandemic?
@LA Railfan Due to decreased ridership, Metrolink is temporarily offering a reduced schedule. Fewer locomotives are needed now.
Goodbye F59! I will miss you.
My most favorited f59 locomotives where 877, and 864 because they sometimes had good horns and where the first two I ever saw when I was like a 5 year old.
They are my favorite locomotives
the original f59s look like a larger version of an f40ph and the newer f59s (the f59phi) look like a diesel power bullet train.
Excellent Video
💮💮🇮🇳💮💮
Well, they’ve served their purpose, the F125s, along with the Rotem equipment should make for a sleek and modern looking setup!
8 F59PHIs For The California And Arizona Railroad, And 12 F59PHIs For The Trinidad Denver And Western Railroad
I heard that they would rebuild some let’s hope so. After watching a video on metrolink’s and seeing 882 (the locomotive they said they would start the rebuilding process with) sitting and roting away I think not.
It will be sad to see the F59PHs and F59PHIs to be retired. But if someone restores any of the F59PH and F59PHI locomotives, it would be happy. Like Amtrak did with their AEM-7 locomotives. Or what Amtrak Surfliner did with their F59PHI locomotives. Because we know two of the Amtrak AEM-7 locomotives, 915 and 945 are put on display at the Railroad Museum Of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Pennsylvania. And the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. And we also know that Amtrak Surfliner had moved their F59PHI locomotives to Chicago Metra.
My Favorite Metrolink F59PH is 859, and F59PHI, is 875. I'm glad 859 has already found its new home in North Carolina, but we still need to hope that 875 makes it. Hopefully it could be sold to Tri-Rail or Exo.
859 had a white numberboard with small blue text and the old Metrolink logo was patcher over with blue, and 875 just looked better than the rest of the PHIs in the scheme.
I always felt closest to 859, with it being "F59 859, '59 '59", having been used with the Coaster set back in 2007, and having been involved in the Placentia Collision in 2002.
I've owned an HO Scale Model of 875 since childhood. I also think 875 has a better K5LA than every other F59 on the system.
Goodbye F59s of Metrolink! They'll be missed.
Sad to see them go :( Will any of the F59PH's be saved?
Most likey not
This is like the end of the world for me because back when Metrolink used to do the holiday toy express they would use these for the engine with the decorations and greetings on it, but now that can’t happen again with these engines being gone😭😭😭😭😭😭
i didnt even know they were going away, my first train video was a metrolink f59
Sad to see the ones on metrolink go but the f59's are still going strong on the Trinity Railway Express and on the NCDOT piedmont
And Metra.
Awwwww I never Got to see metrolink F59ph oh no their being retired pls don’t!
Same.
A few of the rebuilds are still running so you may still have a chance to see them.
@@CoasterFan2105 that's a relief. Hopefully I can go visit California before they're retired. Hopefully if I don't make it in time one or a few might make it to a rail museum or tourist railroad. Or make at to Metra to continue life in the Windy City.
Just wish the F59phs and f59phis are my most favorite Metrolink locomotives!

Metrolinx still has them, and they also have the same bi-level cars! The 2 systems, are surprisingly similar!
@@Humulator I was gonna say they're the exact same thing, but then I remembered Metrolinx is the agency running GO Transit. Thank goodness no one actually calls them that or else mass confusion would arise.

I've always loved this locomotive :( farewell!
goodbye F59.. u will be missed
First amtrak f59ph and now metrolink f59 how sad :( I actually rode on one of a f59 trains rest in piece...
Ik, screw the ugly chargers and f125s, they're nothing compared to the f59s and p40s, oh well, it'll take a while to get used to them
Great video, but I heard that some of the F59PH's will be overhauled and sold to Amtrak Piedmont, and some of the PHI's will also get overhauled and used along side the F125s due to them having issues
The F125’s issue is being a failure
@@hamtrak_p42dcamtrak67 ik
Hamtrak_p42dc Amtrak Hardly lol. They had a few bugs at first but they are amazing power. A lot of the AV line engineers love them and have given them the nickname “Monsters”. They are great locomotives, not failures
@Amrep dude499 A wet leaf could disable the F125s traction motors back in 2018.
@@Amrepdude499 monsters? I'd say orca since they kinda look like one with their scheme.
Oh I wish the original locomotives can come back of the F95 PHIs
I like the streamline version of the f59pjh locomotives better than the regular body versions.
@Acerailfan3101 F40PH I been having that same thought in mind, too!
Well, they were fun while they lasted. Right Mike? (And everyone else?)
@Coaster Fan 2105 Good Job! Noooo! I love the F59’s. I already miss the Pacific Surfliners. I don’t like the F125’s. I hope some go to museums in California. Do you know their disposition?
