Now THIS is my kind of shorts. Thank you.
Modz ?? It's moTHS
Agreee
I said that to a Walmart employee after they helped me find a pair of shorts.
AMEN! Be thankful that GOD woke you up today! THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD! 🙏🏾✝️ PLEASE DO NOT USE THE LORD’S NAME IN VAIN! AMEN! Let's keep this family friendly please! GOD DOES! ALL GLORY TO GOD! LORD PLEASE FORGIVE AND HELP IS ALL TO GET INTO ETERNAL PARADISE! Pray for everyone! None of us are worthy! But remember, GOD hates the sin, not the sinner! AMEN! 🙏🏾✝️
So... let me get this straight...
Moths go towards my lamp post... not because they navigate by some celestial body.. instead.. the use a celestial body to navigate and it ends up that they circle my lamp post.
Yep... that clears up a lot. Thanks!
They use the sun (light) as a cue of what position to keep their back facing, so it’s different than using the moon as a gps to tell them which direction to go
Thank you! The difference between the "old" theory and the new is really not great enough to say that the old theory is flat-out wrong.
What about nighttime when there is no sun
He didn't explain it that well, but the 'old theory' was that they try to maintain a constant bearing based on the position of the sun or moon, and so they do a controlled spiral into the lamp as they try to ascend. This is different because this is an *uncontrolled* spiral. The part about confusing the lamp for a celestial body is still true, it's just that the specific mechanism that causes them to crash into it is different.
Yeah, as an entomologist i think this guy either didn't explain something critical here, misunderstood something about the first signal, the article was about daytime insects and not moths, or i dunno...
mothman is doing barrel rolls around a lamp
What if my special someone is a moth?
Or they like science trivia.
Give them a back rub.
Just turn on lamp dummy.
No offense btw
Turn a light on
Boy do i have good news for you
Nice start to the video 😂
I was so excited and immediately let down 😂

“Because the light was on” - moth
Insect black holes are an awesomely terrifying idea
May the world acquire this knowledge
Man this is pretty heartbreaking
I wish they would do tests on how different colors affect them
"Your wish has been deeply considered, but ultimately declined out of lack of interest or reasoning."
@@iLoveBigKnockers rule 156 Doctor Bright is not allowed to summon spectral moon moths with an led lamp (no source)
@@thatidea24 Ew, a furry
@@iLoveBigKnockers dissapointing behavior. also, whats to say they are a furry? and if they actually did happen to be a furry, so what? like get over it. doesn't affect you, so quit being unnessecarily rude and unpleseant about furries existing. its anoyying and mean. =|
This supposed to be highest likes comment instead of those overused joke
A moth must have burnt itself on the candle flame after pondering,
Perhaps in this very burning, lies the pleasure of existence.
So this is kinda like being underwater and suddenly not only is there a light above you, but also under you, and now you don't know which way the surface is.
It may be wrong that moths use the moon and other celestial bodies to navigate, but you've got to acknowledge it's in the right ballpark 😂
Moths are so cute idk y ☺️
It’s cause they’re just fuzzy butterflies, what’s not cute about that :)
Silk moths are the cutest. I'll die on this hill.
I’ve seen hundred of moth flying around some lights in a suburban area. One of the scariest things I’ve seen
They're small and fluffy, with big eyes. Also dumb, and harmless. And prettyeif you look at them closely.
Ik, they're so fluffy
Insects serve important purposes in nature. Please turn your outdoor lights off.
moths are cute, i just dont want them flying around my face and ill adore them
They use moonlight in the same way as sunlight. What hijacks their navigation is the dorsal light response. Which can be from any prominent light source, including moonlight at night.
But moths are attracted also to lamps with access from one direction only (like ceiling fluorescent tubes).
So instead of a psychological thing they couldn't avoid, it's a physiological insect body horror type of thing they couldn't avoid.
I got a butterfly stuck in my laundry room last night. Silver-spotted skipper, skipped its butt all over my ceiling light.
So if you put lights on the floor do the try to fly upside down? Or set the floor on fire in a dark room?
aww poor moths :( this is like trying to go further north while you're at the north pole, you'll just circle the place forever...
Moth be like: Why is "Up" "Forward" now?
Still doesn't explain why insects fly towards the light in the first place, does it?
After careful research, the moths fly with back turned toward the light making them fly into it because they fly upwards not forwards
@isaacpahl690
Not all lights are up
@@_Shiptoster_ I mean, in nature 99% of the light at night is up.
@@tonydai782
Sure, but I'm talking specifically about light that isn't natural
So the Pale King should have used a lamp for the Radiance
This doesn't actually explain why moths are attracted to lights though. It's not like they fly upward toward the sun, but they do fly upward toward porch lights
But what happens to them at sunrise and sunset?
I like the ones as big as your hands. Lol.
The crew and i in the woods have seen the catapillar larva of a cecropia moth. Would love to see those more in the wild.
So what you're saying is....Moths confused the lights with the moon until a few days ago!
Isn't it just a more detailed explanation of why their GPS goes haywire?
i have 2 pet moths, my lamp brings all the boys to the yard
Wow, guess you learn something new everyday. Appreciate the knowledge, some guy on RUclips a few years ago told me knowledge will make me successful 😂😂 Jokes aside, thanks brother and stay safe.
Moths during the day: "Praaaaiiise the Sun!"
Moths during the night: "Praaaiiise the- bleh! Praaaaiiise the- blargh! Praise th- praise th-! praise-! Bleh! Bleh! Bleh!"
Wait, so does this mean moths don't have that sense we do of which way down is? Or does it just not work well in flight? Cuz like, I don't need to look up at the Sun to see which way is up...
THANK YOU! i have been hyperfixated on lepidoptera for a few months, and recently my old teacher has requested me to teach for her sometime in the spring when they get caterpillars, and this fact REALLY helps! 🙏 teaching children the truth is the best
I dont get it? Can someone explain more simple 😭
Moths try to fly so that the sun is oriented above them. They think lamps are the sun, so they try to keep it above them, which basically means flying in circles around it until they crash into it.
@EdKolis if they use the sun to orient themselves how come they're nocturnal? I'm genuinely asking
@@star_of_666 good question...
Also a gr8 way to rack up iNat observations. 🦋
What is that moth at the end? It's beautiful
IIRC, that's an Atlas moth.
Edit: Looked it up, and yep, it's an Atlas. Fun fact, they're one of the biggest moths on Earth.
@@lunalgaleo1991 thank you!! I learned something new :-)
@@marlesimms 😁 No problem. I love bugs. They're so cute!
That genuinely had me in the beginning.
I skipped the video and came back to know that bummer impressing tip 😂😂😂😂
I actually did work experience at a research centre doing a study on this, and we set up a moth trap as they explained how they work!
Also loved that "BUT THAT'S WWWRRROOONNNGGGG" 😂
Nacho libre
Thank you for telling me how to stop my moth infestation in my home, I'll just get a flamethrower with a lamp
But then there is the flame! :-O
THIS is what I needed
I thought because the light is hot and at night is cold...
I thought it was just to find mates.
it's so cool that science adapts and changes with new information, kind of like the opposite of religion
Can't wait to find out. Is it because moths ... are idiots?
I was always told it's because they get close to it, there eyes don't adjust to the dark, they get spooked, and fly back, and they just can't go anywhere until its day. Lol
during nuptial flights termites do this, too, but that doesn't quite answer why theres so many of them bunching up around the lightbulb if thats the case
So basically the samw answer. They use it to help navigate while also using it as a gyroscope l
The cute special someone I wanted to attract was a moth.
It's the same theory but worded differently...
You litrally just said that the old theory is wrong, here's the new theory according to the latest research and its the same thing. The theory hasn't changed??
I think there are some colored lights that bugs don’t see or hardly see so they don’t get pulled in
Isn’t that the same thing as what you said scientists initially thought?
No because we taught insects were navigating using celestial bodies. They just want to point their back to the sun
The poor moths
Moths are assholes. Now fights me, absolute radiance
when he said " this isn't the video for you" I said "Okay thank you" and scrolled
I actually got to see the setup for this experiment at Imperial College London! It was extremely cool.
Only explains why they get stuck near the light. Why did they fly towards the light in the first place.
awh man now i feel bad for them
As a moth I can confirm that It's true
Everyone knows that moths actually go towards light because they believe that the light is The Radiance!
I thought you were going to say "because they can see things around the light…"
I'm honestly suprised that natural selection hasn't already taken care of this. Electric light has been around for a while now, especially for insects that have a very short live span and therefore produce many generations in just 1 year.
I guess it's not THAT big of a deal for insects.
At first I thought you were gonna give away a good info who knew you were gonna give away a great info.
This is not a butterfly
*IT IS ELEPHANT MOTH*
Have you seen this little boy who named his pet moth Mothew?
Does that mean their altimeter goes heatwire!
The bugs are not attracted to bistro lighting, so I use this instead the porch light.
MAWS
Moths use the sun to keep themselves level? Do they not know which way is up? I know they're just moths, but surely they must know when they're upside down.
Random question the caps on bath and body works hand sanitizer are either black or white but what do they mean? 🤔
Darn, so they aren't even wanting to go there? Oof
Möth
Why donthey keep their back pointed up..doesn't everyone agree that seems random..except to avoid being blinded or burned by the light?
What if.... We put a moth and a Firefly in a room together???!!😮
It's a Pixar movie waiting to happen. The whole day moth would tease the firefly but as soon as it gets dark it'll be attracted by the firefly's beautiful dump truck!!
Moths are nocturnal, though
Don’t think of it as light. Think of it as energy. The energy from an artificial light with have them spiraling down 🌀
Has the same effect on humans
I had one hope today...
I like Norm Macdonald's explanation better
But what about flies flying around a light that's off?
So,moths come to light because they think it's the sun or moon?
So basically it’s just a different way of saying the first one was right.
And in what way is the new research explaining it? This sounds like "six of one, half dozen of another."
I thought they go to the light to mate ☠
This is great😂
Does anyone see moths anymore though?
Certainly not as many as there used to be
so.....they dont mistake the lamp for the moon, they mistake it for the sun ?AT NIGHT ? they are even dumber than we expected.
That was wrong! But also completely correct
This explanation leaves me very skeptical. Doesn’t explain why they’re pulled towards a light.
That doesn't make sense. If they point their butt towards the light, then they would fly away from it. But they fly towards the light.
Science be like "do you want to know why humans enjoy strawberries? We've picked up ten humans and found out their grandmas made strawberries jam, their grandma was lovely so strawberries remind them of strawberries jam that reminds them of grandma. So now you know why all humans love strawberries. And remember, they all love strawberries and grandmas, obviously." Ok science just do it 🤖
Why in the world haven't they evolved to adjust to this relatively new thing, by now? I mean, freaking frogs can change their sex all within MY lifetime, why haven't insects figured this out yet?!
So... They do confuse it for the sun/moon after all?
So then they do use celestial bodies to navigate.
Well, what about ceiling lights then?
