Modifying an Impact wrench for more torque (1st attempt)

  • I've wanted to experiment with improving the performance of this cheap Harbor Freight impact for a while now. In this first stage I improved the air flow from the inlet to the motor. Although there was a noticeable improvement in power, it isn't enough. I'm now working on improving flow through the motor, hopefully there will be enough of an improvement to remove lugs that were installed by a more powerful twin hammer Impact.

    I used ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4ynqaujg7rZKFapA8s29kTpRszJGa3-K this for the first time today to replace the front wheel bearing on my rwd 98 dodge dakota. This had absolutely no issue removing or reinstalling the lug nuts and it took off the axle nut without any struggle. Sounds like it's got some muscle to it. Time will tell

I was like well he may go to a dermatologist like me cause i have severe phoriasis n some times it gets on my arms when i get sick, upset, eat something. I mean i say he meant it in a kind way but you think he would know or at least think you know what to do. Esp n you posting a video. Idk why some ppl comment on a video when it hadnt got nothing to do with it or like the ones saying you get what you pay for. I mean there has been sometimes when i wish i had a cheap torque n hadnt had 2 pennys to rub together.

    Just did similar mods to an identical wrench. Drilled out the screen, drilled the exhaust ports in the motor out to 3/8, drilled two 3/8 holes in the housing directly over the motor exhaust ports, and drilled the number 4 port out to 5/16. I also oiled all the internals with motor oil. Even on standard 1/4 inch hoses and fittings it really rips at 100psi. It's also much louder. I put a 1/2 inch nut in the vise and it ran a grade 2 bolt all the way down to the head, unthreaded shank and all, without any trouble at all.

    That's my first impact. Still have it, got in a 1995yr set with the CH compressor and 1/4&3/8 ratchets. I don't know why I still have it, other than no one else will want it and still works. Kind of a nostalgia thing i guess. Never did have any great torque, but was better than nothing and did work well on less than 150ft/lb nuts. I have many other impacts now. A lot of great memories fixing cars with it. Now just a tool box decoration.

    It seems to be a growing thing that everyone is looking for more and more from there air compressor and air tools, especially the renown impact wrench. I for one have been using the same air compressor and impact wrench since 1998. The only changes to my compressor, is I had to replace the pressure gauge 2 times until I figured out that if I made sure it was positioned correctly so as to not allow moisture to collect due to facing 'down hill' so to speak. I replaced the pressure regulator switch once. Also I learned to use quality connectors. I prefer Milton, not to imply that there are not other quality types out there. Just that they don't sell them at HF. I've had no issues dealing with lug nuts on all my vehicles and my grown children's vehicles. Just so you know, I have a Campbell Hausfeld compressor VS501000 13 gallon 125 psi max SCFM 5.6 @ 90 psi and a Campbell Hausfeld 1/2 impact wrench which I do not know the model number but I purchased it the same day I purchased the compressor. My compressor does not have an out pressure regulator, so I have one attached to a bracket that's hung on the wall so if I have a reason the set the out pressure below what the 125 max, then I connect it to the outline and connect air hose on stored on the reel. I have 100 feet standard 3/8 rubber hose using Milton Hi-Flo connectors. It has served me well and I do not see any need to change anything until it is worn out. I was able to remove all the lugs on a friends 2010 GMC 2500 HD with no problem. I would suspect that if someone threw a 1 ton at me, I may not be able to handle that unless I pickup a higher torque impact, like an Earthquake. Not a mechanic like many of you are and you very well need all you can get out of your tools after all they're your livelihood.

    i wonder if drilling the passages in the housing itself would help. also, maybe somehow adding weight to the hammer, maybe migging beads across the back? just throwing ideas out. the forward/reverse switch is pretty restrictive too.

    • @SteveStoltz
      @SteveStoltz  7 лет назад +1

      I considered drilling holes in the case, the exhaust seemed to be the most restrictive bottleneck on the outlet side, but since I didn't got to the extreme on the inlet I just settled for opening up the existing ports and machining the outside of the cylinder a bit. I machined the forward/reverse mechanism quite a bit, but the ports that were cast into the housing were hard to reach with anything that I had available.

    I am enjoying your video, and I had the same impact for many years. It died, but it was my fault. It took a spill off a ladder onto cement. Anyway, I replaced it with a much more powerful unit. While I like my new impact a lot, I *really* miss the old one as you could not snap off a fastener with it. The new one will snap things at the drop of a hat. Every tool has it's place. It surprises me how much I miss that old impact. BTW, she will crack lugnuts, it will just take it like 10 minutes of banging on each one.

    You get what you pay for. You can get the Earthquake XT with coupon for $99. Instead I upgraded to the Aircat 1150 and I expect to have a quality product for a long period of time that can actually do the job. You should also upgrade to high flow connectors and couplers and that will provide more power.

      @@socialghost4400 on mine, the air fitting just unscrewed and the spring and ball just came out. For the adjustment knob on mine, there is an Allen set screw on the front of the grip down from the trigger. Once you back that set screw out you should be able to wiggle the knob out.

    I have the same gun, and the same problem. It would have been interesting if you had torqued those lug nuts to a value (say 100 lb ft and 120 lb ft) and note the before and after results.

    • @SteveStoltz
      @SteveStoltz  6 лет назад

      Yeah I thought about that after the fact, It would have been more helpful to people with something to compare to. It is a useful impact now though, I use it all of the time for lighter nuts and bolts, I don't have to worry about snapping things off with this one.

  • @jordaneven9096

    don't fail to consider how much a quick connect can impact your torque, too. You could try to ream the the wholes in the quick connect like you did the gun, or screw the tool straight into your airline. Alternatively, it could just suck :p I've been relatively happy with the HF "professional" model (earthquake) for working on my little nissan sentra, so I don't think you got pop out near 500+ bucks for a great impact

  • @philldownes8685
    @philldownes8685 3 года назад

    first thing to do is go to compressor and check the gauge shows 90 psi with the wrench working.. not with wrench sitting idle.... and then make sure you go good air line 3/8th minimum and put the gun to the hose with just a single quick release. quick releasefitting slow down the air so you need to make sure the air line can give the power... put airline direct to tank not through any fittings. go direct or you lose the power... only drill out the one large hole in the setting.. the idea is not for speed but for power. so you can dial it down and not strip out weak bolts/nuts.

  • @CuriousKL
    @CuriousKL Год назад

    OK. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton 4WD. The torque specs on the lugs are around 140 ft lbs. I can remove my lugs with my Kobalt 1/2 brushless impact that only has 200 ft lbs break away torque. Those lugs nut on that truck are tightened way beyond what is required. So who ever is slamming those lugs on that truck is a jerk.

    You can get a IR TI 1/2" impact used on Ebay for a reasonable price and rebuild it for cheap if it needs rebuilding. IR are the industry standard.
    Or at least get the HF Earthquake models. They are supposed to be very decent and modern in design and performance.
    Those steel case impacts (whatever brand) are very ancient in design and should not waste time on those. Time is money. And wasted time is stressful. Seriously, just give it to a metal recycler.

      I have other impacts, I actually compared this one to an Earthquake in the video. This was just something I did for fun in my spare time. This impact has become my go to for light duty things though, like removing stubborn bolts from lawnmower engines etc. The 700 ft lb gun will just snap the heads right off of the bolts, where this one will gently work at them.
