It is so nice to finally see it explained this way. I got really hung up with the way it was taught to me initially, because the teacher never mentioned the 'trade-off' going on between alpha and beta at all. He was focusing solely on the fact that POWER increases as alpha increases (and beta decreases). I could not warp my head around how increasing alpha (increasing the probability of a Type 1 error) could possibly be linked to greater POWER (probability of accurately rejecting the null hypothesis). That seemed totally counter-intuitive to me. This video does a great job of showing the trade-off involved - which is how it finally actually made sense to me. Anybody else run into this?
It's sad to say, but they should fire my professor and replace him with these youtube videos. He knows what he's talking about, but we don't. You know what you're talking about, and now I do too. That's an important skill to few people have
I most definitely agree that DE courses should incorporate resources like this. The answer to "why don't they" is that making videos like this is incredibly time consuming (and not that easy to do well). Nobody in their right mind has the time to do it. I certainly don't, but I'm crazy enough to do it anyway.

After studying a bit of statistics in high-school, then at university having recently started an online course, I still couldn't get my head around the relationship between Type I and Type II error. Although you did not say it directly this way, I was able to deduce the following understanding in a more intuitive sense: There is or isn't a difference between two things, in reality, and this is independent of the statistical test we use. Whether our test detects this is another matter. So if we set alpha to a really low level, it basically becomes very hard to reject the null hypothesis...therefore our test most likely predicts 'negative'. Whether there is a difference (positive) or not (negative) is unchanged by how we affect alpha. Therefore, if a test is more likely to predict negative because of low alpha, for any given real difference we are more likely to falsely conclude a negative answer.

I'm not sure precisely what you're asking. The probability of a type I error is the probability we reject the null hypothesis *given it is true*. Power is calculated assuming that the null hypothesis is false in a specific way. For example, when testing H_0: mu = 10, we might calculate the power given mu = 15, or mu = 3. Here, the probability of a type I error would be the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis if mu = 10. As a hand waving argument, when we increase alpha, we make it easier to reject the null hypothesis and thus we increase the power for any value of mu (any value of mu that differs from the hypothesized value, that is). I go through detailed explanation of the effect of sample size, variance, alpha, and the true value of mu on power in another video.
one thing I cant understand: I know is worse making a type I error than a type II, I just cant understand why... In the criminal trial exercise shouldn't the null hypothesis be that the defendant commited the crime and vice versa for the alternative? Since the person is on trial It's assumed he commited a crime so the null hypothesis is equal to the original hypothesis of him commiting a crime and the alternative different is from him commiting a crime.
A person is assumed innocent until proven guilty. If only weak evidence is presented, then they are found not guilty and off they go. If very strong evidence that they committed the crime is presented, then they are found guilty. It is not the case that the person on trial is assumed to have committed the crime.

Correct me if I am wrong - For a small value of alpha, the type 1 error (false positives) increases. But in the video at 5:38, it has been shown that type 2 error(false negatives) increases. Can anyone help on this?
If we decrease the value of alpha, that makes it harder to reject the null hypothesis. So, we will not reject a true null hypothesis as often (we won't make as many Type I errors), but we will also not reject a false null hypothesis as often (we will make more Type II errors).

I had not thought that far ahead about multiple H0 where not all are false or true to look for that reasoning. I now realize I would answer a lot of questions that couldn't be answered :). On the matter of the language used, I was trying to translate the math into normal language, which brings it's own difficulties for a novice like me. Power depends on various factors, such as the sample size, the true value of the parameter, the hypothesized value of the parameter, and the variance. The word "power" typically has positive connotations in English, and that holds true in statistics -- we like tests that have greater power. Rejecting a true null hypothesis is a bad thing, and that doesn't have anything to do with power. Your statement "do not reject H0 | H0 =TRUE, is exactly the same as reject H0 | H1 = TRUE." is not correct. Not rejecting a true null hypothesis and rejecting a false hypothesis are very different things. They are related in the sense that they are both correct decisions (decisions that are consistent with the underlying reality of the situation). Cheers.
There are two ways of writing the hypotheses in one sided tests, with each one of them having pros and cons. If the appropriate alternative is H_a: mu > mu_0, then writing the null as H_0: mu
Call me stupid but I don't understand something. I know that if type 1 error is small then the probability of not rejecting Ho when Ho true is large. How (if possible mathematically prove) the connection between α and β cause I cannot understand why if the one increases the other decreases.. THANKS
3:34 In Russia police cares only about good statistic and doesn't take into account guilty you or not. Thas more than 99.5% of cases in court end with a guilty verdict.
Typically we simply choose an appropriate value for alpha and go from there, and there is no optimum value of alpha (without imposing other constraints, like on the power in certain scenarios, sample size, etc.). But if a specific rejection rule was outlined, you might be asked to calculate alpha in that scenario. For example, if in a Z test we stated something like "We will reject Ho if Z > 3", we could calculate alpha for that specific scenario. But usually, the researcher simply chooses what they feel is an appropriate value for alpha for the given problem, which means they often just pick 0.05 (but don't get me started on that).
Power is the probability of rejecting a false null hypothesis. Alpha is the probability of rejecting a true null hypothesis. They are probabilities calculated under different conditions (Ho being false / Ho being true), and there is no reason why these probabilities would need to add to 1.
Thankfully there are other videos on this, because i find your descriptions short, confusing, and leaves me more confused than if i try figuring out on my own. I had not thought that far ahead about multiple H0 where not all are false or true to look for that reasoning.
I now realize I would answer a lot of questions that couldn't be answered :).
On the matter of the language used, I was trying to translate the math into normal language, which brings it's own difficulties for a novice like me. I am also not a native English speaker, "given" in my language translates into "on the condition that". I accidentally used 'when' instead of 'given'. Yet your point remains the same.

Again a wonderful presentation, I enjoy listening to you. However, if I follow your explanation : power = proportion of people in whom you do not reject H0 given that H0 = TRUE. When you look up the definition in wikipedia it says Power = probability( reject H0 given H1 = TRUE) . It cost me some time to swallow that do not reject H0 | H0 =TRUE, is exactly the same as reject H0 | H1 = TRUE. Am I right?
Power is the probability of rejecting a *false* null hypothesis. Alternatively worded, power is the probability of rejecting a null hypothesis, given the alternative is true. (If the alternative hypothesis is true, the null hypothesis is false, and vice versa.) Power depends on various factors, such as the sample size, the true value of the parameter, the hypothesized value of the parameter, and the variance.
The word "power" typically has positive connotations in English, and that holds true in statistics -- we like tests that have greater power. Rejecting a true null hypothesis is a bad thing, and that doesn't have anything to do with power. Your statement
"do not reject H0 | H0 =TRUE, is exactly the same as reject H0 | H1 = TRUE."
is not correct. Not rejecting a true null hypothesis and rejecting a false hypothesis are very different things. They are related in the sense that they are both correct decisions (decisions that are consistent with the underlying reality of the situation). Cheers.

Are H_0, H_a not supposed to be one another's logical negations? I.e What is H_0 :mu = 10 and H_a: mu > 10 ?
There are two ways of writing the hypotheses in one sided tests, with each one of them having pros and cons. If the appropriate alternative is H_a: mu > mu_0, then writing the null as H_0: mu
Call me stupid but I don't understand something. I know that if type 1 error is small then the probability of not rejecting Ho when Ho true is large. How (if possible mathematically prove) the connection between α and β cause I cannot understand why if the one increases the other decreases.. THANKS

is there a way to solve for alpha?
Typically we simply choose an appropriate value for alpha and go from there, and there is no optimum value of alpha (without imposing other constraints, like on the power in certain scenarios, sample size, etc.). But if a specific rejection rule was outlined, you might be asked to calculate alpha in that scenario. For example, if in a Z test we stated something like "We will reject Ho if Z > 3", we could calculate alpha for that specific scenario. But usually, the researcher simply chooses what they feel is an appropriate value for alpha for the given problem, which means they often just pick 0.05 (but don't get me started on that).

Power is the probability of rejecting a false null hypothesis. Alpha is the probability of rejecting a true null hypothesis. They are probabilities calculated under different conditions (Ho being false / Ho being true), and there is no reason why these probabilities would need to add to 1.
