THIS STUFF IS SO EXPENSIVE | Coastal Foraging for SEA URCHIN (Uni) in Half Moon Bay, California

- Want some delicious uni?! I'll show you how I foraged a bunch of sea urchins at Maverick's Beach in Half Moon Bay, California. The cleaning process is tedious, but the urchins are too damn good to pass up! While not a true catch and cook, uni are delicious when served raw! I encourage you to go out and collect some sea urchin as well, as they are highly invasive and destructive to the local ecosystem. They can easily decimate kelp beds, which have caused the local abalone population to decline significantly.
In California, you will need a fishing license to harvest these urchins like I do in the video. Each licensed individual may harvest 35 urchins per day. Please be mindful to not damage the rock bed while harvesting.
Be safe and have fun! Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video!
The orange "meat" parts are the gonads FYI!

This is a great video! My fiancé and I are trying to forage for uni for our first time in half moon bay too and found your video. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome! Be safe out there. That's the most slippery place I've ever foraged😅
This cleaning tutorial is SO GOOD.
Omg that looks amazing!
It truly is so delicious! I used some for a pasta sauce too. Give it a go!
That's awesome that you were able to harvest that many. Your cleaning technique is meticulous and neat, I like it. Would love to see a catch and cook with these. Maybe uni pasta?
I've made an uni pasta before and it was so rich and delicious. The cleaning definitely takes a long time but it's worth the effort!
Damn!! Those uni were CLEAN. Great work bro!
Thanks dude! Hard work... But helllllllaaaaa gooooooood. Never sick of uni!
very good tutorial. thank you for posting
I love sea urchin u inspired me to go hunt for urchin
Awesome! Tides were kinda low recently. Did you get a chance to harvest some?
Now I know how to clean the uni!
Nice! You could even dehydrate the shell for decoration too
Nice!
Thank you, Taku!
Rip to the crabs in this vid😞
Yeah that first one not sure why it was there. It was pretty close to shore when we found it motionless. That second one... Yeah that was my fault! Leg will come back in a few molts. Thanks for watching!
Wow ver nice
Nice video! Subbed
Appreciate the sub! Watched a couple of your videos last week. Good stuff 👍
Great video! How low does the tide need to be? Doesn’t look like there are many low tide days this month.
I wouldn't recommend going to this particular location unless it's 0 or less. I've definitely made the mistake of "1 foot of water isn't that bad" 😅
I want to do this soooooo bad. I love Halfmoon bay beaches (my personal favorite is Ross Cove)
You really should! The coming months are the best times to go as the tides will start to become more and more negative. The uni will be pretty filled too usually at this time of year
@@FishAnotherDay thanks for the tip!!

Great video. I went in that weekend but got nothing. Got sth today from another spot.
Awesome! Are they still just as plump and full now?
@@FishAnotherDay I think some are a bit melty, some are still full
I’m going today. Hope I have a much luck as you. What breed are your pups? Very cute
Good luck out there! The spot in the intro has a bunch and they reproduce so quickly. My dogs are a mix of pomeranian and yorkie. They'll be in more videos too. Thanks for watching and stay safe!
Just saw this video august 10, I see all the low tide is like 6am, how did you find low tide during day time?
Varies with the seasons. I actually kinda prefer the early low tides because there are way less people if you're at popular spots
awesome video, how long did it take you to find the limit? Thanks!
Once you find a patch, not very long! It's a matter of how picky you are with the sizes. You can easily limit in less than half an hour of good sized urchins if you're willing to get into deeper pools
@@FishAnotherDay Thank you for your awesome reply, one last question what level of low tide you can catch sea urchin, many thanks!
@@asianmomfacts technically, there's no tide level requirement, as you are legally allowed to dive for them (way higher daily limit for drivers as well; 40 gallons of urchin if I remember correctly). If you're strictly looking to harvest at the location in the video, I wouldn't try with anything higher than -0.5ft
@@FishAnotherDay Thank you so much for the information, maybe one day i will try it! subscribed
@@asianmomfacts appreciate the sub and happy to help! It's not difficult, but just be careful of the waves if you're near the edge of the tide. Have fun!
Music is a bit loud but that uni looks delicious!
Yeah, definitely still learning how to edit then and even now! There's a low tide this coming weekend. Give it a try if you have time! Thanks for watching
😍❤💙💛🙏🌍😍
Ooooh O! you broke his leg. I feel sorry.... cause Ocean doesn't have a disability agency for the crab to claim disability for a loss leg.... LOL
Yeah... On the bright side that leg will come back in a few molts! Felt guilty on that one
@@FishAnotherDay I was just teasing you.
What's a good month to visit this place?
Where exactly is the location?
Must you eat Urchins raw? What does it taste like?
Haha you can definitely cook it if you'd like. I've made a pasta dish using the urchin as the sauce. Basically tossing the urchin into the hot noodles. I've also had it steamed with eggs, but it's just often eaten raw.
Try it if you get the chance! If fresh, they're a bit sweet, a little savory and a pleasant ocean flavor. Think butter of the ocean
@@FishAnotherDay heheehe you made it sound so deeeelicious and tasty which I'm sure it is although I just recently heard about it.
What is domo's breed? He's adorable.
Fishing license? Isn’t the purple one invasive
Yup, fishing license required. The purple ones are indeed invasive. Luckily they taste delicious👍
Where rU foraging my friend
Maverick beach
The red one is the one people want, not purple
Yup, most people go after the red ones since they're generally bigger. I like the taste of the purple ones by far since they're much sweeter than the reds
what kind of dog?
His name was Domo. Half Yorkie terrier and half Pomeranian. He sadly passed away in July. I miss him so much
@@FishAnotherDay I'm so so sorry. My mom wanted to know, she thought he was so cute. I love your videos so much, I want to go up the coast just to forage some urchin :)
purple urchin is actually UNLIMITED
DFW regulations still state a daily limit of 35 urchins if harvesting like I did. However, possession is unlimited (meaning you could go everyday to harvest 35 without penalty). Honestly, I'd like them to make the daily urchin limit unlimited for a while to let the kelp grow back so we can have abalone season open back up sooner though!
You’re actually eating the gonads
Yuuuuup! Noticed I called them roe sacks in the video (they are not). They are nads indeed
Wow. Nice job ripping that poor crabs arm off. 😖
While not my proudest moment, I left it in the video intentionally. I'm not the first, nor will I be the last to accidently rip off a crab's leg. I left that in to show how fragile they are when they're small. Could I have left it out and made myself look better? Sure, but that wouldn't be helpful.
Anyhow, appreciate the view! Stay safe in your search for urchins👍
@@FishAnotherDay Thanks for the feedback.
I was a little "crabby" this morning. (No pun intended!). my comment was not the nicest of comments, obviously.
I know you didn't intentionally hurt Mr.Crab.
I apologize. Accidents happen.
Be well!! And no more crab grabbing! (Jk!!)
Leave rock crabs ALONE in future videos.....
