Even 50 years ago when I started diving, our beautiful California coast was overrun with sea urchins. They had severely damaged the kelp beds. We did our best to keep their numbers down but it was a losing battle because they reproduce like crazy. I'm so glad to see you keeping up the fight Taku. Step on a few for me! Cheers!
When purple urchin sit around the campfire to tell horror stories, they speak of The Taku. He only comes at low tide and you can't hide, even if you surround yourself with rocks and shells. He only comes for the kids though.
They're the reason we can't have an abalone season. They out compete for seaweed as a shared food source. Someone really needs to start a commercial business and export them to Japan. There's one company in southern Ca that I know of doing that.
as long as you're still young (which you are) you can change career paths however many times you want. As long as you're motivated to challenge yourself and go for it. Sky's the limit.
What a great adventure, can't get any fresher uni on the planet but setting up camp right on the beach. So "cooked" uni is amazing too! Now I know, my favorite food on the planet, damn good!
Love the enthusiasm in this video, all the smiles and laughter make for a great day! Thanks for having us along on this trip Taku! You're awesome bro 💪😊💪
I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. Whenever I’m having some bad anxiety, I put one of your videos on and it helps keep the anxiety attacks at bay...like a lot. So thank you Taku!
Just like with lion fish in Florida. See one, kill it. They're very delicious but even if they aren't an edible size you should still kill them because theyre messing up the ecosystem pretty badly.
There's Italian recipes for spaghetti with sea urchin, almost like the egg in pasta carbonara. I loved having uni rolled into nori, dipped in tempura batter and fried up quickly. So good!
My son in Alaska, told me about the guy. Great channel. Give this man a show. Very enjoyable to watch. Knowledgeable. What more do you need. 5 stars!!!!!
Really glad you've made it Taku, but there is still alot yet to explore! I really hope you could continue providing great content for us. Thank you for your hardwork!!

This is my new favorite channel. I've spent time in Washington and all over California, but now I wanna hit up Japan for some fishing after binge-watching these videos. Taku come visit northern Wisconsin, fishing and camping.
@@bruce_tee Yep there's actually a lot of coastline along there with barely any people. I've driven along it and lost count of the little beaches like that one.
Hop on those herring, Taku. They're spawning in Sausalito right now. I caught some last night fried them up today, delicious- and the milt sacks coated in corn starch and deep fried taste just like shrimp chips if you let them get crispy! I liked them better when they were cooked longer so they had more of a crust and were less creamy/liquidy. When they're cooked for less time, they're insanely creamy with a mild salty and sweet flavor, just like the white gelatinous slime that oozes from crab joints after they're cooked, which you might prefer.
My grandson graduated from the Culinary Academy of San Francisco and did an internship in San Jose on Santana Row for free too and after a month they hired him now about ten years later he’s now an executive chef at a members restaurant in San Francisco. Being a chef is a wonderful profession as you know. I just love the cooking you do outside it always looks fantastic. ❤️😁👍🏻 Doesn’t the Uni have bacteria from the ocean water, just wondering since it wasn’t cooked.?
Your awesome Taku! Hope to see you roll into Aptos with your new van this summer and maybe get to fish together. We'll get Die Hard to join us! Be safe and God bless! 🙏🏼🎣
not one of my favorite creators going to the same college! That is so cool! thank you for inspiring me to become more adventurous and creative with my food plating!
Hey Taku, I just wanted to say thanks for making these videos. I just watched your video where you made risotto with golden chanterelles, and I decided it was time that I should learn how to identify mushrooms so I could do the same. Just yesterday I was able to make my own golden chanterelle risotto, and within the last two days I was able to collect over 5 pounds of golden chanterelles for my family and friends. Thanks for the inspiration 🍄✌🏽
If you want to have a terrific use for uni and don’t like to eat them try this. Take a bucket and smash them into little pieces pour that mixture into a milk carton and freeze. Next time you go fishing use the frozen block for chum. You can buy net chum bags online. Great chum for fishing near kelp.
I would love to see the basics of tools and what they are used for. Like different rods and reels! I have been LOVING your videos. I am moving to Maine soon and can't wait to explore their coast more! And forage there. I am currently in Houston and it's not a very fruitful place.
Nice creation chef Taku. Looks tasty! Dude that guys is nuts that took on that wave lol. Pants and balls all wet.😂 cheers looking forward to how the van is going. As always nice camera action.🤙🍻
When I saw how many other youtuber/influencer types were coming I figured they were going to be super annoying with their phones glued to their hands and faces the entire time. Thankfully they weren't annoying.
For some reason, the urchin dish seems ancient from thousands of years ago, like something you'd discover in Polynesia or Hawaii or even Japan with it excess coast line.
As a person who’s stepped on at least 200 sea urchins while surfing, I thank you for your service.
Same with snorkeling bro😂he’s doing us all a favor
I hope you started bringing vinegar to beach. Getting peed on 200 times is a lot...😂😂 all jokes 🤙🏽

Urchin destroying ecosystem
Taku: YOU CANT HIDE FROM ME
dudum tchh
He has become Anakin, he turned to the dark side and slaughtered all the younglings
considering how invasive the purple sea urchin is, go Executive Order 66 on them
lets be honest with our ourselves, younglings is just a more palatable word for "guy kills a bunch of kids"
😆
