  • Join me on a short day session in search of some pike on a small clear London river. It was eventful to say the least with some amazing specimens gracing the bank.

    Some good pike angling there pal. Impressed, thought you was mainly carp and chub/barbel mainly but youre a good all-rounder pal, and the all-rounders are the true anglers of us!!!

    I used to fish this OLD LEA in the 1970's. BIG DACE, ROACH . Not a PIKE fisherman though. right by the side of the Ferry boat pub was this shallow bit of the LEA. Great fishing .. Good days then before the whole area was ruined. this bit though was the lead to the reservoirs if I remeber correctly.

    Alfie - nice to see a Pike angler taking what he needs - and I mean the tool wrap.
    Doesn't happen often (I have had 1 incident in the last 7 years) but those cutters are a godsend when you need them.
    Nice Pike.............ever thought of just freelining a Sprat / Roach fished sink and draw?

    Thanks for the video. I live down the road from that stream. It has been massively depleted by the local cormorant colony so great to see there are still big pike in there. Although about ten years ago a 38lb monster was caught under the bridge where you got your first fish. I understand that there’s nothing of that sort of size left.

    Apart from the Walthamstow reservoir itself - The copper mill is probably one of the only places in the area you'll really manage to hook into one. There are so few of them in the neighbouring river lea itself which is very sad as the copper mill runs all the way to the mariner in the Walthamstow marshes along the river lea but it is what it is. I've fished both directions from lock 17. All the way to the Walthamstow marshes in one direction and Enfield Lock/Broxbourne the opposite way for a year and I gave up.
    I used to fish the reservoir for big carp many many years ago and had a nice 18lb mirror out from the copper mill with a float rod freelining a small bit of bread, but im too much of a cheapskate to go there now as i think their prices are absolutely insane when thames water already make so much money. I think its something like £200-300 a year to fish all the lakes or £160-200 to have access to one or two of them. £15 for a day ticket. I'd rather go elsewhere.

    • @hojo9879
      @hojo9879 Год назад

      Lea Navigation was the first place I fished as a kid 45 years ago. It's so plluted now the fish struggle to live and reproduce, you do find the odd pocket of silver fish though and along with them some decent perch and pike. I have heard rumours that some catfish have come out below Rammey Marsh lock.

    • @aimhigherking
      @aimhigherking Год назад +2

      @SabreTigerLover why would you give so much detail about the spot? theres poachers watching this who would happily go and take 3 pike for dinner. be careful

    • @hojo9879
      @hojo9879 Год назад

      @@aimhigherking Catfish are not supposed to be in the Lea Navigation, if you catch one you are supposed to get in touch with the enviroment agency and get it removed. The other option is to take it home and eat it but the water is not as clean as it once was and the pollution can cause the Navigation to smell during the summer, so no thanks. This rule also apples to Zander and several other alien fish species that are causing problems in UK river systems.

    • @Boxersboy-um1fd
      @Boxersboy-um1fd Год назад +3

      @SaberTigerLover - the River Lea does hold Pike - you just need to broaden your horizons.
      Broxbourne doesn't have many - the main aim here is the 'Donkey' Perch if you can connect with them.
      I have had success with Lures on the Lea going beyond that point - Rye House, St Margarets, Ware and Hertford East - you just need to keep 'plugging' away (no pun intended!)
      They aren't there in numbers - but that's part of the challenge - to catch a few. 2 years ago whilst at St Margarets I was speaking to a guy who showed me the picture of a 24lb Pike caught on deadbaits - and from the picture, I could see that it had come from the area.
      You can't catch all the time! - if you did, it would become mundane. Not catching makes you think - particularly with lures. Shall I change the size? - the retrieve? - maybe even the depth I am fishing at? - what about the colour?
      Keep at it - it can be soul destroying but they are there!
