  • Here we have a vintage 1960s Tom & Jerry Music Box toy purchased faulty from eBay. Tom no longer pops out when the handle is cranked. What mechanism is inside this toy. Can it be repaired or will the tin box have to be cut open?
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

That scrape mark makes me happy. If it was random wear and tear elsewhere, you could say it was just from randomly getting banged around in attics or what not. That wear next to the handle tells me ol' Tom brought some kid a lot of happiness a long time ago. Some kid loved that thing.

I'm not sure what I like best. Vintage mechanical repairs, electronic repairs, or Rolls Royce repairs. They are all so brilliantly awesome. Also love the way you also include the fails and retryd. YOu learn most from making mistakes. Keep up the good work Vince my mate.

Brings back memories of me taking my music box to bits to fix it. I got Tom out, bent one of the combo arms back in place and it worked great, then it got thrown out.
Well I was a 5 year old girl. Dad wouldn’t let me try to put it back together.
My poor parents. I dismantled everything.

It really strikes me how similar the outside is to an old style tea tin! (Yes I am American, but my mom had a cabinet full of 1980s Twinings tins...) I bet the outer casing was made by a company that made tea tins, and then the toy company simply placed the mechanism inside.

    • @davidsmith-ih2kk

I bet they saw the tea tin and thought what can we use it for then we can buy tea tins cheaply and make tom and jerry minus jerry, jack in the 📦 boxes

I think we also might of had some!
Were they gold or chrome with a pressed metal lid that was molded with a concave circle indentation that surrounded a black plastic knob handle?
Some of ours might of also had little vertical windows on some of the containers.

I watched this grinning from ear to ear. I had a jack in the box in the sixties when I was a kid. It sounded exactly like yours. Mine was just a clown but played the same tune. I can remember spending hours probably annoying my Great Aunt Nean playing pop goes the weasel over and over. Thanks for sharing another great video!

Amazing how that rubber is still more or less elastic from all those years. Certainly a very different formulation from those cassette players where it turns into a goo after like 25 years.

That acrylic paint can be thinned with water. Deposit some onto any type of pallet, wet your paint brush and thin out what you need to the consistency you need (on the pallet) as you go. That will greatly help with the brush mark problem.

    • @lukerazor1
      @lukerazor1 Год назад

Also the quality of those craft paints is generally pretty bad. If you wanted to do a really nice job you'd use paint designed for miniatures (Vallejo, Army Painter, Citadel etc)

I did not check the comments Vince but the name is partially worn away it actually is ROSEBUD MATTEL TOY MAKERS" Mattel was the licensed makers of these kinds of toys regardless of what the toy actually is. Puppet, Car, Jack-in-the-Box, Doll/Action figure etc. Great fix. Definitely enjoy your content.

Loving Tom's Jazz Hands 👐 Rosebud was a toy manufacturer (mainly dolls) in Wellingborough, Northants in the 1960's. Mattel bought them out in 1967 and from that point on they used the "Rosebud Mattel" branding. I think the L of Mattel had rubbed off from it being close to the winding mechanism. 👍

I tried to figure out how this toy worked before you took it apart. I imagined a music box like the one metioned in the other video, and as you wound the handle it played and ratched down a spring. When the "Pop" section of the tune played, a cam would release the ratchet, striking a lever at the top of the box, releasing the catch and allowing Tom to spring out. The way the toy works in real life is genius, very simple indeed! Great fix as always Vincce :)

My oh my, this was excellent Vince, I love how the hands have nothing to do with the rest of the body, completely random. It’s like the face is super detailed and the effort really stopped there, no budget for anything else lol.
And I must say you did an excellent job with the painting. At first I thought you did the texture on the white paint on purpose to resemble fur, and at least from the video’s perspective it looked right. Thanks for 40 minutes of pure entertainment :-)

I've not YET watched the whole fix video, so may be jumping the gun and repeating what you already know ... but the original 'Jack in a Box' tune was to the rime of: Half a pound of tuppenny rice, half a pound of treacle, - that's the way the mo -n- ey goe's .... POP .... goe's the weasel. And of course it was at the 'POP' that it triggered Jack to shoot up! If their Mum was singing along to it - she would raise her voice at the POP to enhance the surprise and make them jump. Love the Program Vince !!

I used to have something very similar to this as a child. I can't remember what character it was now, though, but it wasn't Tom & Jerry. I'll be thinking about that all day, now. The tune it plays is, 'Pop Goes The Weasel', unsurprisingly. The reason he doesn't come up straight is because you didn't secure the cardboard tube to the bottom of the tin, so every time he, 'pops', it displaces the tube from the bottom of the tin, so it's somewhat skewwhiff. You can push it back into position, of course, but ideally it should be stuck in place.

My first experience of one of these was the version that had Jack the clown from Romper Room inside. I played with one in annAsda supermarket circa 1970 not knowing what was gonna happen. I ended up screaming the place down when Jack popped up and I desperately tried to shove him back down and lock the lid ( not knowing you had to further turn the crank to do this) . Rather cruelly, I think, my parents found this all very amusing and bought me one for that Christmas! I still have it locked away in a box in the attic and it still works perfectly 53 years later

Mattel made a ton of these jack in the boxes and you can still buy similar ones today. There were various other melodies for other characters, Eg I have a seventies Bugs Bunny with a different tune, but there's Popeye, Dr Doolittle, Woody Woodpecker etc. Rosebud I believe was a division of Burbank who mainly made dolls and cuddly toys if I recall. Because they had the rights to make Mattel toys in the UK they made a British version of Chatty Cathy too! I have one and she looks totally different to the American doll and speaks in a very sweet and proper English Accent. You also need to look out for the Burbank Noddy, Tom and Jerry, Buzby and Sugar Puffs Honey Monster talking cuddly toys (similar to Rupert and the Womble etc) I had all those as a kid.

It was Rosebud MATTEL Toymakers who made this. Rosebud was taken over by Mattel in 1967 so this is 1967 or later.

When Vince was painting Tom’s face and fixing his body, did it remind anyone else of Woody being repaired in Toy Story 3?

That would be Toy Story 2.
