From a musical mosaic was born this work of art, here is how:
The band sat down in January of 1971 to begin to work on what they felt would be their best piece to date. Work began by allowing a very open atmosphere for creativity, putting down any and all ideas that anyone had. First, 24 concrete musical ideas were recorded, which was later expanded to 36. One of the experimental ideas that was used for creating this piece was that the group would decide on a key, and while the rest of the band left the room, one of them would play something, each person adding bits and pieces.
While playing around with his keyboards, Rick decided to amplify them through a Leslie rotating speaker. One particular note stood out very clearly. Dave called it "a strange resonance ... kind of a feedback thing ... Ping! A complete accident. We said 'That's great!' and we used it as the start of the piece. "

This piece is still powerful 50 years after hearing it. You can never know how profoundly a piece of music can be on a person's life, but I do not think things are quite the same after hearing this. So many people use the word Journey. And it can even be repeated. Under certain circumstances, the crows... hearalds of impending death, scared the bejesus out of me. But then, there is the soft, beautiful, ascending ending too.
One of the best reactions I have ever seen, thank you so much.

A powerful song about loneliness and isolation that will spark your emotions.

I wouldn't say ahead of its time, I'd say it's exactly in the proper time it should be and it's timeless. They took all the music they had absorbed and made an amalgamation of Blues, Rock, Jazz, Classical, film scores and added an electronic component to it. This is what they're known for and no one has been close to repeating it, I think it's unrepeatable without being derivative.

@@saintejeannedarc9460 Live in Pompeii? NEVER. Only once, have I ever heard a live recording that's better than a timeless studio original: Bullet the Blue Sky live in New York, from Rattle n Hum. Otherwise, there's ALWAYS so much missing. A studio original, has so much depth, so much of the intellect poured into it: that's just not there. Another example I give, is another complex song (and my favourite Led Zepp): No Quarter. It's simply too complex to possibly do justice live, there are too many layers, too much is missing. Another thing, is that pretty much ALL live music sounds good-when you're there, but it sounds dreadful in recordings. But anyway, I appreciate that you at least appreciate Floyd.

As the band progressed, they moved away from shorter songs, pop, rock, blues and more into experimental and psychedelic, as you hear later in the song. After so many years and listening to Echoes hundreds of times this is my favorite PF song. Just so prefect, mysterious, so many layers and great transitions. You are right it is a journey. That is why the longer prog rock songs are so great. The band has time and space to develop the scene and theme and take you on a wonderful ride. If you like Pink Floyd you should also try Yes in the 1971 to 1977 time period. They were also masters of prog rock epics that could take you on a sonic journey and create a movie via sound. So much amazing music was made at that time. I see you have reacted to many PF albums and you are not afraid to try the longer epics (like this) so that is a great reason to subscribe. Continue you Prog Rock journey. And do not worry for a first listen your reaction is perfect and is the way we felt 50 years ago. You need to listen to this type of music a few times to really hear it. Great reaction.

This was the very first Pink Floyd album I had bought with my own money, and it mainly came about because I had been given a copy of 'More' which was their soundtrack album for the movie 'More' which is so so surreal, and I loved it so much (played it every night before bed for a long time) that I had to buy Echoes.. In those days the album did not come with a lyric sheet and I could not really follow the lyrics so easily just hearing them. But now when I read the lyrics, aside from the music, for me it tells a story of old souls emerging and seeing others in the street and connecting with them. And these souls are from Atlantis, whose kingdom's remnants archeologists have located under the sea. And now it's time for those old souls to rise again, connect with each other and build a new and more beautiful Atlantis.

This song has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. To me it's telling a story of the earths creation and mankinds journey/transformation from prehistoric beings to who we are now.
But also to recognise that no matter what kind of society we live in today at our core we are all human beings and thus the same.
There's probably many meanings behind this song but that's the main one I take away from it.

You captured what the essence of the song is about for me extremely well!! An interpretation that has evolved with the passing decades since first hearing it when released. Hope you do not mind if I build off your description with some details where we may share the interpretation further?
The first verses of lyrics are describing our world when it was covered in ocean, when everything was "submarine". Then "something stirred and something tried", being the first multicellular organism to become self-mobile instead of carried by wherever the ocean currents dictated. Which evolved into life-forms ever more aware of their surroundings and becoming ever more self-determining in their actions. Evolution.
The pings at the start representing those evolving organisms "sounding out" mapping) their surroundings, somewhat similar to how a modern submarine vessel does with sonar.
The music could be representing various stages of that progression of more sentient life-forms over time and emergence onto land. The sombre sections being lows (say, natural disasters affecting the environment, mass extinction events, etc), the lighter, uplifting parts for the advancements made in the evolution of life, the times of flourishing diversity.
To me, the extremely chaotic section after the instrumental leading to it breaks down in structure and melody, is the asteroid that hit 65 million years ago, wiping out something like 50% of all animal and plant life. After the climate had settled down and the planet eventually healed from the impact, I believe, was the time when life-forms first evolved sonar. Represented by the simulated sounds of whales sounding out their surroundings, exploring, then learning to communicate with their relations via sonar, an evolution bonding them tighter as a species. The slowly emerging structure of a melody and tempo that builds in complexity out of the previous chaos = life flourishing once more.
The second verses, I think, representing someone's evolution from childhood to adulthood, their growing awareness of the world, themself and how closely related all humans are in our shared evolution, both past, present and future (yet, it can also easily be seen as humanity's evolution told through one person's life/changing views as they/us mature). They have matured and are the current day "something stirred and something tried" by attempting to reach out to other people, to share experiences so each can learn and grow with the other, as the whales did. In a sense, they are "sounding out" their/our surroundings further, exploring, another life-form continuing to evolve, which helps us all mature as a species.
A song about evolving and maturing and where that could lead us all (notice the song leaves on uplifting, hopeful notes to match the verses).

@@rorycallaghan5719 I had a lengthy reply typed out on my phone then my battery died and I lost it all so I've not the energy to type it out again unfortunately.
Needless to say I think you hit the nail on the head about echoes. The song shows the parallels between physical evolution through time and the cognitive evolution of humans.
It ends on a fairly hopeful note about optimism, free will/free thinking and a hunger to improve and evolve further.
The sun is brought up with is typical for pink floyd, symbolising our life/existence.
I guess the very last line could be our need for answers ''call to you (the sun) across the sky" about our existence and our future?

For me this song represents life and earth as a whole. The initial high pitch piano note at the start represents the start of the universe or the start of earth and the creation of it all. David’s first solo along with the background keyboard makes think about how beautiful the creation of earth is and then the song gradually gets more hectic as it leads up to the high pitched screaming sounds, which could represents the chaos of the planet and the universe before life started developing.
The high pitched squealing part gives me the feeling of loneliness as if the earth is now capable of producing life but it’s empty.
And then finally the gradual build up to the ending and once again the single piano note represents life rising up and slowly becoming what is to be our past, present and future.
That’s how I view this piece when I listen to it. I had to listen to it a couple times before I fully understood this concept but it brought a tear to my eye once I got it :)

Great job. Check out Echoes Live in Gdansk from 2006. Gilmour and Wright (keyboardist) play the entire thing note for note in a beautifully staged rendition. This would be one of the great Richard Wright's last performances of the song before his death. Richard Wright is one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. After his death David Gilmour said he would not play the song in concert again. He was such an essential part of the piece. Their musical interplay at the end of this Gdansk performance is heart-wrenchingly beautiful.

I love the first half of this song quite a bit, the second half too. The chiming, the slow introduction of new instruments, and the lyrics. Telling the story of the genesis of humanity and the constant fight from life to exist. But then the song gets quiet. We're left alone, in the world that was created for us. No hope from above.
And then we hear it again. The chime returns. Warning that our journey is not yet over, that there is more to overcome.
