  • This is my 3D-printed opposed-piston engine. It took a lot longer to make than I thought......

    I wish I'd seen this sooner! I'm in the process of designing a unique engine as well an this was a huge motivator! Also, the quality of your videos has sky-rocketed! Good Job!

      The OP 2 stroke chainsaw will be coming out soon! Now lets tak 2 850 rotax and make a 1700 uni-flow scavens 400 hp 2 stroke trail sled and much more with a turbo, how about a 9.5L mini Deltic 2 stroke made out of 3 60 deg mercery optimax 3160 cc 2 stroke for 1000 hp OP 2 stroke deltic or way more with turbo and torque! How about a rhobus 90 deg v16 time 4 3516 cat motor op giant 2 stroke motor!

    nice, tip... loosen the tolerances, then to make that up & *seal them properly,* dip the parts in sodium silicate (concrete path sealer , some cat litter, etc) & spin dry each part to get a somewhat uniform super tough glass like thin layer (& extra far harder infill as a free bonus) ...stick a small compression spring on the ball barring to make it re-seat properly....or make a small recycled internal air passage to the top so as to push it back down oc

      that sodium silicate sounds messy lol, wouldn't the surface be quite rough? I will try a spring and see if it helps things, there's a trade off i guess as you lose some power as more force needed to open the valve, not sure how much it will impact the engine though

      @@kurzey8532 messy, can be sure lol, do the engineer thing -put on you're old recycled covid groves- do it in a bucket inside a plastic bag inside a cardboard box ,twist & hang them on a thin steel wire -cage, cheap fence wire/diy plastic/coke can string- ...
      *smoother as the sodium silicate is essentially as fluid as water hence its other name 'water glass'*
      it basically goes off/hardens due to the CO2/carbon dioxide in the air, or as many aluminium casters (should) do add a bit of it to the sand, mould, then force carbon dioxide through it to almost instantly cure/harden it all solid in place.
      use a derivative of that fast cure.. for recycling shredded/sand wheeled old plastic -+Mica, ball milled iron filings + some ground 'face mask' small neodymium for magnetic engine parts, dense flywheels/gears etc-
      with 'water glass' binder as an infill/insert for a far quicker printed plastic -thin liquid rubber covered- part shell
      -yes you Can Do advanced but simple & quick diy too, heat it/the composite up (old microwave for a few seconds- , -loose some of the neodymium magnetism through- )
      -as in, heat that -*-composite-*- to melt the plastic in place, its just harder to actually get co2 in there to make it/sodium silicate binder go off quicker without bubbling it through-
      + the main use (super) quick dry, hard finish & seal for instance.
      if ya going to 'make stuff' for fun, you might as well think what useful test part/device might i use later & make chain link parts etc rather than useless test boat prints... one of my pet hates

    Great job! That is the best 3D motor I have seen, due to the lack of fiction and low pressure required. Most you see run off a large compressor using a higher PSI to force the poorly mated parts to turn. I shared your frustration through the video! Been there done that!

    This is amazing! Opposed Piston Engines don't get enough love. The only automotive one i can think of is that "Achates Power Opposed Piston Diesel", which idk if that will make it (maybe they could *open source* it if they go under, one can dream lol)

    Very good vid but you missed out on the Deltic and Commer knocker engines which were very efficient and powerful. All two stroke diesels have to have forced induction, but importantly the inlet and exhaust are timed so the exhaust opens before the inlet.

      Thank you! Someone else mentioned the Delta, I saw the commer knocker during my research but didn't think to include it...Perhaps I can look at doing these sometime in the future, would've made for a very long video if I covered everything haha

    This was really cool to watch. Graphite is porous - great for lubrication but not sealing air so that part was no surprise, but still cool.

    I made an opposed-piston air engine a couple months ago... I had a working engine, smaller than yours but probably **way** less efficient... Also mine stopped working after like 20 runs or something haha. I did not have the determination to continue to fix and improve my design though... plus I wanted to release a video finally... so great job sticking it out and actually making a good design!
    Also, great video, entertaining to watch, you are improving with each video I feel like.

      Thanks man! Just checked out your video it's impressive you modeled that in blender 🤣 I haven't had much luck with springs as of yet, they're a pain
      I was close to quitting both times I couldn't get it to work lol, I know the feeling of wanting to get the video out, close to succumbing to it with this one too!

      @@kurzey8532 Hopefully it will he's going to take it for a drive tomorrow. I'm surprised it didn't melt already. My 50% infill print melted in the thin parts when I submerged it in boiling water but the thinker parts held up better I guess 5mm walls can conduct enough heat to not melt immediately. Can't wait to see how it holds up.

    Hello from Martinique F.W.I....You have done a nice job , to increase the rotation of your air engine, may be you could use the air coming out of the exhaust port and send it to the air tank with a valve ...or to a kind of turbo charger to keep the pression in the circuit...have a nice day...and congratulations...

    Because the two-stroke two-cycle engine spins quicker it rotates faster per minute that's why it puts out more power that's just one reason one stroke is there power intake and exhaust and the other stroke is the compression

    The Porsche Boxster used a boxer engine, that is, opposed pistons that compress and expand together, not opposed, in 1996. So they must have been legal then.

    Please, PLEASE use a resin printer. it prints finer than a hair and you can make tolerances almost exactly as you would have in your cad software +- 0.05mm or so.
    lubricate everything and test again. This could be an amazing diy air engine for toys or rc aircraft, I believe in you !

    About sealing, have you tried to coat the mechanism in some sort of food spray? Or cast the parts in acryllic to get all the holes sorted

    Well done with your 1 cylinder engine. Keep experimenting, I can't help thinking though, that there must be a reason that the [real world] engines are mostly 3 cylinder.

      I think Most cars are straight fours, problem with 1 cylinder is there's no opposing mass going in the opposite direction on the power stroke, so you get a lot of vibration, thanks for the comment!

    I'd imagine the efficiency figures for the Achates engine isn't 50% better than a gasoline engine, 30% better than a diesel, but rather running the Achates on gasoline, it's 50% better than a conventional gasoline engine, and running it on diesel it's 30% better than a conventional diesel. Since the engine surely uses gasoline or diesel itself. Probably either if you give it a tweak, the same way conventional gasoline and diesel engines are largely the same design.

    I'm currently printing my 7th air engine ^^
    1) one cyl, fdm print, never worked
    2) one cyl, resin print, worked really well (8.8 ccm)
    3) V2 engine, resin print, never worked (too many print issues and leaks)
    4) one sqare cyl, resin print, has a second valve to fill the crankcase with air and press the piston back up, but never ran smoothly (leaks)
    5) similar to 4, resin print, with only one main valve, worked okay but leaked (~3.9 ccm)
    6) one giant cyl (25 ccm), never made it's way to the printer
    7) one cylinder, fdm print (0.1mm resolution). Piston is made from 4 parts + 2 screws and 3 piston rings. It actually has noticeable compression and very few friction! I'm currently waiting for the delivery of the bearings 🙂

      @@kurzey8532 The new model runs absolutely insane! 2000 rpm at 20 psi. Never had this before. The old engines reached 1000rpm at 60 psi.

    How small do you think we can go on a 3 cyl. for motorcycle or marine . I want diesel & HHO to avoid supercharging . Suzuki used rotary valves on their 2 strokes . Do you think a tooth belt will work instead of gears . I think you need 2 cyl minimum .

    rather than graphite, you can use that PTFE bike lubricant. At least, it worked on the turbo of my Corsa by removing the rusty hard point. Also, when it comes to insulate, the aerosol expansible foam does wonders, I use it for my wingtips.

    Hi Kurzey, question here, I am also making a compressed air opposed piston engine here, but with a valve similar to those used on a 4 stroke engine, I know it brave as I could find very few compressed air engines with valves which aren't ball bearings, but i notice you have printed your cylinder as one piece with the valve assembly, how did you get the support out, and if you didnt use support, which orientation did you print it? And lastly, what is the clerence of the pistons in your cylinder and did you sand them at all?

      I was torn between a rotary and this, choose rotary, couldn't get the geometry to work in fusion 360 so threw my toys out the pram and went for an opposed piston engine 🤣 but yes I want to try and make one lol

    Does the inlet not need a 'valve' which stops the compressed air on the compression stroke being forced back out the inlet port, as the it'll exceed the input pressure. A presto type inner tube valve should work, the closer to the piston as possible to minimise any uncompressed air.

      The idea is the air pressure in the air tank should exceed the pressure on the "non-power stroke" at least initially, though as the pressure in the tank decreases this is probably less effective, some kind of spring would probably help

    I think if you made the entire expansion chamber more square, it would increase the efficiency. You could also use a diaphragm too.

    This is an awesome video. Have you considered the addition of another exit Port directly under the inlet port that would shut just as the inlet Port opens and thus it would vent the air out that the two Pistons are attempting to compress on their return stroke to take another puff of air to push him out? There is no reason to have a compression stroke on a non combustion engine. Just a thought. I wish I had the time to try this myself.

    Just wondered... have you considered buying an electric compressor? Seems like it'd make your life so much easier, even if it's just a tyre inflator and maybe use a bike tyre as a reservoir.

      @@kurzey8532 its actually gonna make valve timing super easy as the only moving parts are the pistons and the block, i think the main issue is getting the inlets to seal to the block when its spinning and all that..

      Trying to get air to seal is a pain at the best of times so yes sealing would be a nightmare, I doubt this engine would be efficient simply due to air leaking everywhere, at least at first, but it sure would look cool!

    can you make a model where the exhaust air is used on the way out of the cylinder to push the piston back, perhaps quite simply by this air being led out behind the piston and thereby blowing on the back of this

    What do u use as piston rings or how are you sealing the pistons ?

      The sealing is entirely dependent on the gap between the pistons and the walls, so there will always be some leakage

    Sucks to hear that you will not be making more videos on this any time soon. Perhaps when you do, try adding a function to change the timings? I think that is probably the next biggest influence on efficiency. But since youre taking a break from this, the next videos should probably be about something a bit more simple and easier to succeed at. Not sure what kind of things interest you, but im sure that anything you do will be fun to watch.

      I think I will make some more videos on it soon! This was just enough for one video 🤣 took me 5-6 weeks to get to this point lol Got a few ideas, not sure what to do yet but hopefully now I've got it working shouldn't be as difficult....i hope

    Build a real one for a bicycle .The rotating wheels should somehow [pump air into a small tank]
    which in turn supplies the engine with air. Some ware the pedals can also be used to improve
    air supply.😇
