So I just had a quick look at the Micro Station video - and saw that in fact I DID de-orbit the booster, and it had enough fuel to do so. So I’m not sure how or why it mysteriously reappeared in LKO, probably something to do with an old save being loaded or something like that? Anyway, it did end up giving me a good excuse to make this SSTO, and I ended up having fun with this mission :)

Matt: *casually landing on mars whenever he wants, building space stations, doing aerobatic manouvers in space* Me: *screaming at the screen as i crash and explode into the muns surface for the 78th time within this hour*
Since Matt talked about uselessness of space stations it reminded me that a few weeks ago I built a dual gravity ring massive Moho station and my friend was like why did you spend 4 hours on that and I just said it looks pretty nifty
This has reminded me of an amazing show about space called Planetes. It is set in the year 2075 when trips to moon are on regular basis and debris became a real problem. The main protagonists are employees of debris section at a space station whose job is to collect space debris. The show is really well made and scientificly accurate. It explores human relation to space and to each other and humans living and working in space. Absolutely amazing show, I recommend it to everyone interested in space. It is on Netflix, as well on other sites.
A nuclear engine that heats up the propellant via heat exchangers shouldn’t pollute anything, but heating the propellant by directly letting it touch the reactor (more lightweight and efficient) directly could lead to some neutron activation..
I'd recommend placing a stack decouperer on the docking port, with a small nose cone. Then you can drop it before you reach orbit, and the will burn up.
Make a large space station with lots of docking ports, which you can then dock ships to and refuel before going to wherever you need to go. Make a large rocket fuel tank on it and you can send refueling ships to refill the tank. You could make this orbit kerbin or the mun either would be useful for interplanetary missions. Consider this idea anyway :)
It occurs to me that it could be an interesting idea to put a small unmanned space vehicle either in orbit or attached to a space station, designed to fly around and push stuff out of space. Just a small thruster, maybe an ion thruster? Some solar panels, a probe core, a docking claw and a bit of thruster fuel. Whenever something gets stuck in orbit, send out this little thing to give it a push and done. Keeping space clean! No need for a dedicated mission to launch an SSTO from the ground every time.
Great SSTO video. I haven't tried to build an SSTO for ages and your rather cute yet useful spacecraft has given me some inspiration. Southern Comfort is not fit for human consumption. It might make a good antiseptic, but only because no self respecting bug would be caught dead in it. May I recommend you try Glen Moray scotch whisky. It's quite a smooth scotch and is one of my favourites.
You know, I think it's more fun watching the easy missions where everything goes right... ish! There's just less stress all around, and no plot hole of keeping Kerbals in space for 30 years for all the gravity assists. But that's got me thinking of high-power ships for fast transfers, and those would be their own kind of trouble. I'm doing the sensible thing with fuel depots supplied from Minmus, but it's honestly a bit of a pain keeping the depots supplied. For the Jool system, I'm sending mining landers so big, they double as fuel tankers in the hope I won't have to be quite so organized. And I bought Making History today, largely (pun intended) so I can make bigger fuel depots without raising the part count too high. Oh by the way, Southern Comfort is, on paper, something I'd expect to like, but I had some once and never touched the stuff again. There's something wrong with that liquor.
Southern comfort is great! So much so that I went from a sip, to 'O shit that's good i'll have another,' to flat-out drunk. And then it didn't taste so good anymore. But still, worth it.
I felt that way about a Thatcher's cider, recently. I did like it to begin with but less so as I continued drinking it. It was still good enough for me to finish, though.
Matt, I have a challenge for you: You should see if you can get an asteroid in orbit around another asteroid while it orbits something else (yes you can do the sun) Edit: I recommend using the kerbin-asteroid bug where you time warp and they glitch into kerbin orbit then once there are 2 it is just getting a really big craft in orbit around the mun or something similar
I've suggested a very similar thing. Not exactly the same, but a while ago I suggested getting an asteroid into orbit around the Mun, just for the satisfaction of giving a moon it's own moon.
I'm planning a whole line of SSTO's for my KSP. - one of the roles of the SSTO department will be crew transfers... once the habitats or crafts are in orbit, ferry the kerbals to the crafts in orbit. - I also foresee creating an orbital ship yard, so a few SSTO would be needed to bring raw materials to orbit as well - finally i plan on creating an orbital junk yard, rather than de-orbit anything, I'll store it all in a orbital junk pile, so if i ever need parts out in space, i can grab them from the junk yard if they exist there, instead of pulling them back up into orbit again... rather refit and refuel and recycle... =D they could always turn into deep space probes...
Matt: furious at the thought of even a single piece of debris in kerbin orbit, goes through great lengths to bring it back to the ground me: casually leaves dozens of bits strewn across the entire kerbol system, no world is safe from my relentless littering, not even interstellar space
When that Blunderbird’s intro came on and the entire Southern Comfort thing happened, I laughed so fucking hard I woke my wife up twice. Love you Matt lol❤️
About the lab, i used it in my first and second plays, because i couldnt get to duna after going to minmus (and i didnt had enough funds to go anywhere but LKO), and its the only time i used its function
Once I was bored on my sandbox save and I decided to make a debris-removal rocket. I got a claw and a nucelar engine and started docking to stuff and de-orbiting it. After 4th debris I got bored, landed the thing on Kerbin, got the laser from BDArmory and started burning down stuff. Ngl, this was hella fun!
Wow Matt, your review of Southern Comfort could not have been any more spot on in my humble opinion. The simple fact that it has the name whiskey on the bottle is an insult to ALL whiskeys or whiskies. I wholeheartedly support the rating of 1, simply because it does in fact contain alcohol.
I once launched a vehicle with a basket-shaped bunch of girders to push debris out of orbit... Putting docking ports on the debris is probably good practice.
For the junior docking port on the front you maybe could of just added a nosecose on the end of the docking port and just use the decouple feature on the nosecone to jettison the nosecone when in space :)
Hey Matt, if you're looking for good American whiskeys, I'd recommend trying to find either Old Grandad Bonded (100 Proof), Basil Hayden, Old Forester, Four Roses Single Barrel, or Old Overholt Rye... so much smoother than the big label, mass produced garbage that fills so many store shelves. Just gather the data from the Science Jr. and take it into the command pod. THIS WAS DIFFICULT TO DO IN UNDER 30 PARTS! I haven't seen any videos on youtube of anyone doing it yet... It's very tight on fuel... no landing legs
Can you review any of the Talisker range? They're probably my favourite distillery, and they have a pretty good selection. Talisker 10 is my go to whisky. Also, nice flying ;-)
For the docking port: Just put an nosecone on top of the docking port, you can jettison when you need the docking ports, its only a one way solution though..
Always deorbit or crash your spent boosters. Even if you fling them into Kerbin's atmosphere to burn up, or make a Curiosity rover style landing (where the drone thing landed the rover then crashed). It just keeps the universe clean. Having dozens of random spent boosters flying around in deep space is a danger to operational spacecraft as they can crash and blow up. Even if it's a satellite that's ran out of power. It's best to deorbit it, rather than leaving it there to somehow fly faster than escape velocity and leave orbit or or something.
I love the Mystery Goo centrifuge on the station. Do you think it's going to be a problem that your docking port (the one you docked the ssto to) is facing the stations solar panels? It might be hard to dock once those are extended...
I personally don't pay attention to it, orbits free of garbage and empty rocket stage and rocket booster, because I build each stage so that when they are empty they act as relays. So they still have a functon than just hanging around dead
