Watching your filming of the restoration of the rail line is amazing. Referring back to what someone had stated, how this rail was built when this equipment was not developed. The men that took to build this rail line and think of the seasonal weather condition. You know it is cold up there, think 5 to 10 degrees at night and 20's during the day. I am fascinated with the grunt and fortitude of railroad men and women. Reminds me of the greatness of USA and the ingenuity that we behold. I am grateful to you for sharing this story and helping all of us truly understand the significance of the damage of nature. I am looking forward to collecting and documenting this and many other stories for my new book that will document this historical and significant destruction that Hurricane Helene left and the struggles and guts that took to rebuild and recover. Thank you!
Ive got faith that you’ll be present when #5 gets lifted (dragged, levitated???), and it’s going to be the most difficult to handle because of its remote resting place! Don’t beat up on yourself - you’ve done an outstanding job covering this! The drill rigs have their hands full in this region of rock, and I have the utmost respect for every person working on this project because of the brutally cold conditions! The excavator operator deserves a trophy for catching that boulder that jumped out of the river! Excellent reaction time there! I secretly hope the activist kayakers don’t see the excavator moving large rocks at the far point of the new road. We don’t want to give them ammunition against CSX! Thanks as always for your Herculean efforts in bringing this to us! If we ever meet, I’m buying lunch!
@@tomt9543 Thanks Tom! A little tidbit of info for ya...CSX has spelled out precisely their plans and grabbing a few boulders is part of it. So no worries.:)
@ Good deal! Stay warm!
Could you please explain what you mean about the #5. I'm just an outsider looking in.
@ The fifth bridge span that was swept into the river.
@@tomt9543 Thank You.
Loved the shot of the digger throwing the rock onto the ice. The only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys.
Great job on the videos. I have watched your videos since the first one on the rebuilding of the Clinchfield. The destruction was crazy and they are literally rebuilding the railroad from scratch. They're making good and steady progress and hopefully trains will be running again soon. One request on your videos: I liked the varied music on the videos up till this one greatly. If you could please put music back in the videos, that would be great. Thanks and thanks for the excellent job and coverage of the rebuilding process!
I am never disappointed when I come to this channel-another great video. Looks like the weather has added another layer of difficulty to this already tough job.
Stay with it, man. You're doing an incredible job documenting the rebuild process. I look forward to each new segment. Such a monumental undertaking this is. My hats off to everyone involved. Your documentation of this should be archived for many future generations to look back on. The destruction caused by Helene is like nothing I've ever seen before. Thank you for what you're doing.
@@kennethfuller8347 Thanks, Kenneth. Appreciate the kind words. The Clinchfield Historical Association actually did reach out wanting to work together. Hopefully that pans out!
Thanks for documenting all this work taking place
You do a great job showing where they are at and where they still need to go!! I was sitting here watching and thinking, oh! they have gotten further along and then you went further down the river and I thought Oh! ways to go yet. It's so hopeful though. Thank you for all that you do!
@@carriegarrisonvos4433 That is something I need to work on...a map of the gorge and how far in they have reached.
Seeing the first train to travel the rebuilt line would be cool to watch. Really taking shape now, these men are on the ball. Great drone work, thanks.
@@JD-zm4eh Won't be long now (actually it will)...but I better not miss it!
Once again an impressive documentation of how to rebuild a railroad that Mother Nature decided to play with. It looks like they removed much of the cross bracing in a couple of the spans on the East side of the river. They will probably have to cut the braces out of the last span that made it so far downriver. I'm amazed they moved the short span upriver from the original bridge to get a flat area to dismantle it. It will be interesting to so how much of the rail they recover and reuse and how much they replace. There seems to be a lot of it still in the river. Thank you again for recording the process.
Mighty fine! You are an aerial artist! Thanks!
Herculean seems to be the adjective most use to describe this rebuild. It’s appropriate and then some. Thank you men.
Another great video, keep up the good work!
Absolutely amazing, every bit of it, from the work being done to your fabulous filming skills, thank you to everyone involved in this huge rebuild process. Again, thank you to all involved 🙏❤️
Great progress is being made each day. Yes there is a long way to go & there will be bumps along the way but im sure the Clinchfield will see trains on the tracks agsin. You are doing a great job in documenting its progress from start to i hope finish. ❤👍
Your filming is awesome, thank you for continuing to show recovery in progress. Goodness the size of it really put in perspective seeing from above. Prayers for the workers they’re doing incredible job! Seeing the ice in the river way cold!
@@LVSpeedweLL Wait till you see how cold part 11 is!
Designs in Orbit: If it wasn't for folks like you doing these videos, this restoration process would not be documented. The re-construction process is as much a part of the history as the actual disaster was. But there is no sensationalism involved in the labor intensive, expensive process of this. Consequently the main stream media has no interest in covering the construction. Thank you for your efforts in this endeavor!
That is precisely why I am doing this. Someone has got to capture this effort on film! Or a fingernail sized computer chip in my case.
Thank you for sharing. Drone footage is simply the best.👍
Keep up the great work man. If you venture by Buck Stove over in Spruce Pine, stop by Camp Unknown sometime. We are right next to Buck stove
That is RCC - Roller Compacted Concrete they are making. It is cheap and sets up in 24 hr.
it did look a little dry, that explains why.
@@kensmith8832 Ah, thanks for the info!
Thanks for the update, appreciate keeping us updated
Thank you so much for documenting this Herculean undertaking!!
Thanks for your excellent work!❤
I’ll be hauling into poplar all next week…. Maybe we’ll both get to see section #5 get yanked lol
@@Railfan90 Maybe they will let us cruise the Gorge...
How did they ever build this in the first place ??!! What a railroad it is !!
I have been thinking that, too. Imagine what the work must have been like without today's machinery.
Dynamite and steam shovels .
Thanks for the update!
drones are such a great thing
4:00 some guys get all the fun!
Are they creating RCC? (Roller Compacted Concrete) That will make placing it SUPER fast, but it (typically) doesn't get rebar. This will be interesting to see develop!
That is exactly what it is
As always excellent work my friend. Looks like great progress! Anything going on around the brush creek tunnel? Really hoping they daylight it. Looks like there are going to be a long highwall in the gorge. It’s just unreal.
They still need insane amounts of fill.
Thank You for another amazing video story. How many miles of the Clinchfield were wiped out in total?
There is an interesting artifact in that map. The town between Marion and Salisbury on the Southern Railroad is named Statesville, not Statesboro. It was never known as Statesboro, which is the name of the city in Georgia.
Excellent! I wonder if there is any percentage estimate on what the crews have accomplished so far?
I don’t think that is concrete . Im thinking its whats sometimes called pug . Its a mixture of gravel and fined mixed with water that will compact very tight . Thats what they are using to build the roadway along the south side of the river . If you will notice there is no sand pile or cement tanker present. Just the stone . You need all three to make concrete
@@walterfarley9230 Apparently it's called RCC... Roller Compacted Concrete.
Are they going to rebuild the Train Bridge
That's why you see all the sections neatly organized on land, they are repairing the sections before future installation.
What type of mixture was being loaded into the large dump trucks at Relief?

That is RCC - Roller Compacted Concrete they are making. It is cheap and sets up in 24 hr.
Don’t we have new tunnel bore machines that could go through the mountains instead of following the river…?
$$$$!!!
Tunnels are incredibly expensive and difficult to maintain, unless very short. Railroads avoid them at all costs, they would rather move a hillside first. Many early tunnels would be daylighted if they needed a lot of work or expansion.
@ how much cost for rebuilding after a storm.
Designs in Orbit would love to speak to u my wife left my number with u the other day we own the island and property behind it thank u
I'll definitely be in touch!
Question, will the RR re use, rebuild the bridge structure if you know? I'd love to learn how they're going to use the Batch plant which I believe makes concrete? Love your videos but at the same time I wish they were unneeded. Hopefully president Trump fixes what our last failure of a president caused everyone in NC and Tennessee. I also wish I could help out somehow come spring or summer personally if I find a way to make it happen. Ty.😊❤
I don't think FEMA will be involved here. This is private property. RR's have insurance.
Bridge sections are being repaired.
Ok biden was responsible for the hurricane. Give me a break you have no idea whets going on .
This stuff wasn't built overnight.... It will take years if ever it gets replaced....A lot of people will cash out and move on...
@@vernonslone8627 same thing i have been saying . Its going to take a long time . I think they doing good job so far seeing as all the roads have to be hauled in .
We never got to see where the dump truck was going with the concrete. After Trump’s visit today it looks like the corps of engineers will be coming soon to start fixing the other riverbanks and roads.
Corps don’t work on river banks and rds. Corps is already there repairing the water for ashville , clearing up lake lure and several other projects . Learn to read
Like I said before in YOUR videos THERE IS NO CLINCHFIELD RAILROAD ITS CSX NOW!!!!! And THERE IS NO CLINCHFIELD YARD IN ERWIN ANYMORE CSX DISMANTLED IT AND EVERYTHING IS GONE EXCEPT 1shop building
@@M_M-RC Thanks for commenting and the continued support!
Yeah, it is the Clinchfield, lol. It's what many people nickname it today. You foamers are so sensitive when it comes to things you don't even have knowledge about.
