- This is the second video in a series that will document the re-build of the Norfolk Southern AS-Line from Old Fort, NC to Newport, TN. This video documents the re-build of the Norfolk Southern AS-Line from Marshall, NC to Hot Springs, NC not too far from the NC/TN state line. All drone video date is of 01/19/2025.
I have property between Walnut & Hot Springs & can access the tracks. Like you said, anywhere where the tracks were close to the river received the worst damage. Old town Marshall as you saw is still a work in progress. I’ve heard NS wants the line operational by March 31st.
Looking fwd to Part 3
1:45 2 old boxcars
00:36 old caboose without wheels on the right? One of the first video's after Helene I have seen was from this area. Water was way up until the houses on the far right. River was also up on the far left and higher than that concrete wall next to the 3 story building. It was more like a fast flowing sea or a lake here. Water went over the bridge visible at 00:57
You can see where they put new ties down, but they haven’t put no ballast down yet
Interesting that the bridge over the river seems to be intact, yet the bridge over the Nolichucky near me (TN 81S to TN 107) was completely washed away. The State's in the process of rebuilding it, but I think if they put the footers on bedrock, it would withstand any more floods.
I use(d) the TN 107 bridge quite often when I bounce back and forth between Erwin and Sand Valley areas. It remains to this day one of three roads that I use on my railroad travels between TN and NC that are still closed. Toe River Road through Relief, NC and Peppers Creek Road through Altapass, NC are the other two, though according to DriveNC.gov, the latter one may actually be back open now but I do not know.
@@RailRoadChaserNC I've got a video I took while in the Lamar Convenience Center, of the rebuilding of that bridge. It's a slow process.
