This was after the Spurs of San Antonio denied the Lakers' four peat of a NBA Champion, Detriot Red Wings won the Stanley Cup defeating reigning Stanley Cup Champions Colorado Avalanche. Probably one of college football's most unanswered questions. Who was better? USC or LSU? Pete Carroll or Nick Saban? The 2003 teams would have matched USC's better offense against LSU's better defense. While the LSU defensive line may have been more physical, I don't buy that LSU was more athletic though. It is often argued that USC's wide receivers have never matched up against physical DB's like LSU but you could also argue that LSU had never seen such a diverse passing attack as USC? Outside of Florida, the SEC wasn't much of a passing conference. I don't know but I would have really loved to see an LSU - USC matchup.
I’ve always had an out of consensus view this was the best Carroll team. The running game wasn’t 04 or 05s yet but the receiving corps in Williams, Smith and Colbert was ridic and Leinert had his most efficient season. The D was arguably the best of the era particularly the DL with tatupu and Grootegooed plugging holes and corner rushing. The other thing is there were some close calls in 04 and 05 that people don’t remember but in 03 the Cal game was only close game and lost it in double OT to a Cal team with Aaron Rodgers firing on all cylinders. And they blew out top-rated teams like Wash St and Auburn at home. The Rose Bowl was over in the third quarter with the D totally dominating a solid Michigan team. It’s an interesting counter factual though but I think if athleticism was the only edge LSU had, it wasn’t by much given the talent of this SC team. It’s a squad I’d put on par with any of the 90s Nebraska or 2010s Alabama teams
Samuel Haskins that’s a great point and don’t disagree. Just in general I think people overlook the fact the 04 and 05 teams had some very close calls whereas the 03 team destroyed everyone except the 3x OT loss away to Cal

No, you're not crazy. You're definitely a bit stupid, though. USC cheated their way to being an all time great in 04. The 03 team was not that great, didn't even make it to the title game.
I got no problem with usc in fact I wanna see them return to elite status but I have to know how in the hell can they claim a natty in 03 when the top 2 in the BCS standings lsu and Oklahoma played for it?
We didn't "claim" anything. It was handed to us by the AP, who's been handing out national championships since the 1930's. It was the only recognized national championship given before the BCS and CFP. Only time they've ever given it to a team who didn't win the BCS national championship. They along with a lot of people thought it was BS that SC didn't get to play in the title game and thought they were the best team in the country all year.
