  • The best way to explain the R1T is: this is a luxury off-road pickup. If there were ever to be a Range Rover pickup or a Grand Cherokee Summit pickup, it would be a lot like the Rivian R1T.

      The size of this thing is deceiving. It has nearly 200 hp equivalent at each wheel and it weighs 7k lbs, and can tow 11k lbs, if I'm not mistaken.... These are all virtually F350 numbers.. I say we just call it what it is: It's a uni-body on frame... It's definitely both.

    • @calholli
      @calholli 2 года назад

      I hate that there are "modes" like conserve mode--- I'd rather just have the more utilitarian function of on/off "axle" switches, where I can turn the front wheels on or off, and the same in the rear.. There should be secondary switches to act as virtual diff locks also. This thing can spin in "tank mode"- but can it do a "Front dig" ?? Which is required in several off road trails. If it had these simple "manual" controls, then it would be able to very easily. For an "adventure vehicle" they kinda missed the mark on appealing to the offroad crowd... But it's something that could easily be added with a software update.

  • @johnpetrella207
    @johnpetrella207 2 года назад

    Hi Alex, thank you for the great videos. On the issue of The Lightning vs R1T. You may find the R1T to be more robust due to the long real world test period Rivian did with their preproduction models. Ford put the Lightning together with much less real world testing and in much less time. Also, having watched the video about where live, you will benefit with the better turn radius of the R1T. On the charging, being off grid you do not seem to have enough available power to charge the Lightning at its full rate. The ability of the Lightning to power your home is not much of an advantage to you because you live off grid. On efficiency, the R1T will use less energy per mile than the Lightning. You may find the climate control system better in the R1T. As a daily driver you may enjoy the R1T more. So the issue really seems to be towing. Towing on your property will be better with the Rivian due to its shorter turning radius. Towing long distances on the highway may favor the Lightning. So if you engage in infrequent long haul towing, the R1T seems a better fit for you and yours. On $10K over MSRP. No way! Save your hard earned money to spend on more PV panels and and a smart EVSE. Wishing you and yours the very best - John

    The cargo tunnel is a cool feature. The bed is too tiny. If you haul dirt, stone, etc. in the bed, you can be assured that over time, it's going to get into that retractable tonneau mechanism. Massive ground clearance potential. Front end is ugly. Interior is nice. The air vent thing is stupid and needlessly complex. No Apple Carplay/Android Auto is ridiculous and I wouldn't purchase any new vehicle without them. When it breaks, it's going to be tough to find parts or service. If you were one of the folks who didn't initially put down a deposit/reservation, you will be paying the new much higher MSRP price.

    Personally I'd choose the F-150 Lightning. I much prefer the front trunk on the lightning and have been enjoying blue cruise on my Mustang Mach-E. But the Rivian is an awesome choice too.

    Hey, Alex! When the Lightning arrives, you may decide to keep it. Same thing with the EV6. I remember you purchased the RAV4 Hybrid, so I don't see why you might keep the EV6 without selling the RAV4. Hopefully you'll be able to decide which model you like and your content is awesome!

    I’ve never understood the ‘green-ness’ of fake plastic leather. Leather is a renewable resource that is usually the byproduct of the production of human-destined meat or dairy and animal destined meat (i.e. pet food) that will have a need to be produced well into the future. Truly measuring the environmental friendliness of leather vs the myriad of different types of leather-ish plastics is not a simple task.
    Personally I think companies pushing the green-ness of artificial leathers is more about pushing a different kind of green-ness; that is, increased profit margins.
    I’m not saying leather is all better or something silly like that. Different materials have different preferential advantages and disadvantages. If I was buying a car just for luxury I’d want wool velour (quite environmentally friendly and fully renewable), and if I was going to use it more casually, I’d want 1980s style MB-Tex (which is only environmentally friendly in its long service life).

      The tanning business is a very messy one and causes a great deal of water pollution worldwide. Forcing it to clean up in the developed world drove much of the business to developing countries with laxer environmental laws. 35 years ago I worked for a law firm on a case that involved tanning companies, and reading their documents was nauseating. Heavy metals galore being casually dumped.

    the lightning makes more sense, my biggest concern would be how hard the Rivian would be to fix, there's ford dealerships all over. also what if Rivian as a company doesn't make it. Id probably still take the Rivian though, its much cooler. That bed looked kinda short though. Is it 5.5?

    My money is on you keeping the Ford because it will likely be more towable and I can see you using all the power connectivity around the property to charge chainsaws and whatnot. But I always could be wrong. The short length could sway you to the Rivian. But then again, it’s regen is aggressive, it’s got a low button count, and there’s no shade for the roof. Either way, looking forward to finding out!

    I spent a half hour driving a F150 Lightning Lariat. Have seen a handful of Rivians and looked them over for a good bit (did not get to drive). The Rivian is much nicer vs the higher trim F150s. The Ford top trims are just cheesy inside IMO, not on par with what I'd expect in this price range (even accounting for the EV price bump). However the two lower trims are nicer than I expected (I was also surprised by how much I thought the Maverick punched above its weight). IMO if you want a cheap truck get the Lightning in Pro (nearly impossible, very limited availability) or XLT, if you have the desire (and $) for higher end feel and performance the Rivian is the better choice.

    No question, as pretty as this is (and it is gorgeous), an untested service network and no physical climate controls or carplay make the Lightning the instant winner in this comparison.

    • @willlucas5150

      @@ALMX5DP it easily could. its all software. thinking about it some more, they would likely still use regen on all 4 motors but only 2 to drive. Front does seem a bit strange to me actually. if you were hauling anything in the bed, it would be advantageous to drive the rear wheels

    • @markmiller3279
      @markmiller3279 2 года назад

      @@willlucas5150 Unless the thing has abundant traction no matter what because of its weight. I don't know what kind of motors it uses or how it "disconnects" wheels. If it's a physical disconnect I can see not wanting to reconnect wheels to brake. In that case you'd probably want those front wheels doing the seven for the reason noted.
