I removed the thermostat,, drained and flushed out my cooling system with fresh water from my garden hose and performed a regular Blue Devil flush. Then I flushed with fresh water from garden hose and performed the Concentrated Blue Devil radiator flush. Then I flushed the cooling system with fresh water from my garden hose. Then I added a bottle of Blue Devil 8 cylinder simultaneously with a bottle of Blue Devil Pour N Go as directed for both. I let my car idle for 70 minutes and let it sit for 24 hours. Previously the car had the typical exhaust going through the coolant reservoir and overheating within a few miles but zero steam out the exhaust. The car also had a slight sputter every now and then. I installed a new factory temperature thermostat, checked the fluids and added fresh water from the garden hose. My car now runs perfectly fine with zero issues. My car is a beautiful, second owner 1998 Cadillac Eldorado with the 4.6 Northstar.
That Cougar is definitely worth saving for someone who's willing to put in the time and money. Body and interior are excellent, and only 127k on the car.
My mom had a brand new 88 cougar 5.0 when I was 16.. it was the last year before they went to this body style. You wanna talk about a sleeper car .. love how much fun you have with these cheap cars. Sounds like pure joy
I've used blue devil head gasket repair and I am pleased with the results so far holding good she's not good for severely damaged head gaskets but for mine or head gaskets seems to work
I’ve used Blue Devil head gasket sealer (the V8 one not poor and go) on a antifreeze leak through crankcase and it worked and sealed the leak! It’s good stuff
Glad to see it worked. Sometimes you have to veer away from the direction slightly to get the results you are looking for. Example: I was told never to use Barsleak to fix a small head gasket leak on a 4 cylinder Corsica I used to have.... Well I did it anyway and the leak stopped and I drove the car that way for two years. :) Not a bad looking Cougar. I kind of like the top. Look forward to future updates and can't wait to see more on the Mustang and the Corvettes.
Thought it wasnt gonna work at first but it kinda makes sense, the stuff in blue devil only hardens under extreme heat, and will only really harden where hot exhaust gasses are going into coolant so makes sense why after you let the exhaust make its way out that it finally worked! awesome!
The '88 FWD Cutlass Supremes had IRS. Probably the Grand Prix, Regal, and Lumina or whatever, had it too. But the Vette and T'Bird/Cougar were the only RWD cars with IRS.
I take thermostat out first , then add block sealer and top off with water , let idle till smoke stops , let cool , drain water , replace thermostat add coolant and drive for ever
I used it in a 94 Cadillac I had. Ran good as long as you didn't get into the accelerator. Once I did get into it, it just blew it right out of the engine. Good for quick fix though.
I’m barely a novice and I know to removed the thermostat if it wants you to “pour/use on a cold engine”. It’s impossible and pointless to pour into a cold engine if the thermostat is still in! It takes a while for it to open up and by then the engine is hot/warm. I ever understood that. None of these brands tell you to remove it and they call on only pour into a cold engine and I think I know why, but like you I believe it works best on a cool engine.
I have had a 1989 Cougar Blue Max edition that I wish I still had and a 1996 Cougar XR7 that I got from my son and they both had the 3.8 v-6 engine and never had any real problems with them. Nice cars.
Bringing that Cougar back to life for a while longer. Great content Keep us updated on this BD repair. It was smoking so bad it looked like a lost cause. I really like how your gettin this job done!
Missed this when it was uploaded, I'm liking all the '90s stuff coming through lately man. Might have to see if we can get a can of that Blue Devil stuff over in the UK for a car I'm working on. Engine's well and truly cooked but I unsiezed the cam & slapped it together to get it mobile & it actually runs not half bad except for the warped head causing the gasket to blow again. (longer term, it's getting a replacement engine but it'd be interesting to see if that gunk can do some magic)
Hated that ford only issued a head gasket recall for the 3.8 in front wheel drive applications. Stated they blew because the coolant flow was reversed in the front drive config. I think the rwd 3.8 cars were still bad for this. Especially the supercharged ones
You should try the K&W head gasket repair in the green bottle. I use the nanotechnology or the fiberlock. I have sealed leaks that were spraying coolant, brought motors back from the dead, and stopped engines from eating coolant or overheating. I suggest the fiberlock for that one but the nanotechnology should work too.
Is it ok to drain and put new coolant in after a week or so without ruining the fix? I have a small exterior head gasket leak, leaking down the block from the head gasket not in the oil yet. Thank You!
Those service carts are great. I have a Harbor Freight one from about 10 years ago. Don't be like me, mine just ends up collecting more and more stuff until I can't use it. Can't wait for you to get the lift, that will be a game changer for sure.
*Great that you tried this experiment with head gasket sealer man!* Ignore the haters Randy this car was going to the crusher for sure and you saved it from that. If somebody can get a couple of months of use out of it for very little money it would be a good deal for them. Maybe somebody that's falling in love with it is willing to take on the head gasket job if the issue appears again.
Randy, thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for not giving up on the old Cougar! Just a little more love, and you will be able to move her on to someone else. Great news about the lift👍 (video on installation, please) Love how the shop is coming together. And finally, please, Please, PLEASE..... send Swamp Thing to Weird Beard for body/paint‼️ It deserves it❗️
Smmmmmooookinnnn'....... She's angry and letting that Devil out! You can take care of the bug problem as you drive, LOL..... cool that it actually worked in the end.
It's sodium silicate, sometimes called liquid glass. It has been used since the 60's as far as I know. We would just flush the system and dump it in. Run it for a week. Then drain and add coolant. 50 /50 weather it works.
glad you ran it without the cap off, but i've heard some mechanics suggest that you run it on an incline with the front end facing up to help bleed the excess air and gas out that might be still trapped in the system. it looks like i is already parked on an incline outside that shop door, so you may have already done that.
The Cougar is still around. I was so glad to see it, although it is really smoking from the head gasket. Im glad to see you're trying to keep her on the road. It's a good looking car and you're seeing less and less of those two door luxosports these days. Hopefully she'll stick around for a while. From the comments I'm reading, she has some fans.
I remember when my aunt and uncle bought a 92 special limited edition off the show room floor. What a beauty. They always stored it in the winter, in 2003 at 100,000 miles lost a head gasket, the 3.8 was famous for that around that mileage. I'd you have the money and interest you'd have a nice rig after she's all fixed up!
If the motor craps out on the cougar, get up with Westin to see if he still has the ecobeast motor from the mustang. That would be really cool in the cougar, a new lease on life.
I had a 67 chevy truck a few years ago and it had a 230 inline 6 cylinder that had a cracked head. I put some old style Bars Leak stop in it that you had to leave the engine idling for about 30 -45 minutes and let the vehicle sit for 24 hours afterwards. The next day the water leak was fixed. It kept running for over 10 years afterwards.
A ford 3.8 with a blown head gasket no way ...... usually when you have exhaust getting in the cooling system blue devil will not work it can't seal a hole that has exhaust gasses blowing through it
Don’t all blown head gaskets cause exhaust to leak into the cooling system? My blown head gasket didn’t leak water into the block but my water site smelled like gas and did overpressurize my cooling system with the volcano like eruptions and leaks. I tried Bars and BD and they didn’t last.
Good to hear. And excuse my typo, but I think you got what I was saying. A shortcut is to take off radiator cap and smell the coolant or opening. I think my head is pretty f***ed up.
A little late to this video, but I’m really happy to see you trying to revive the Cougar. Thank you for trying with this old girl. The body and interior are in great shape, fingers crossed you continue to get the engine to turn around. 🤞 Blue devil is amazing stuff.
Wow oh my God , I really started to get scared and sad , seeing and thinkin' that the cougar is done but look again Randy has proved the point Watch till the end and gave me the idea that Is new and insane to me personally that that with the radiator cap off it would work , yes finally , truthfully man , truthfully !!!!! yes the cougar has been saved yes , oh man , Randy now please whatever it needs , the oxygen sensors , the proper exhaust (maybe something aftermarket and cheap???!!!!) and Yes love the shop so much , awesome upgrades man yes not only the shop will not only will the corvette ( 'swamp thing' ) not be the same but the shop also . God bless you Randy , your doin' it big and awesome/excellent now . Randy please take my request , the cobra front bumper for the mustang beast and a small lip spoiler for the corvette( your wish you with bigger spoiler if you like) and for the mustang paint the spoiler black. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for trying to save the cougar. I also got one but it’s a 93 last car that my grandpa bought before he pass it will stay with me til someday I pass (I only drive it when it’s nice outside and twice a month)
The Mercury Cougar is cool and that addictive is pretty good and wow you took apart the red Corvette too bad I wanted to see both Corvettes restored but I am glad to see swamp thing restored.
I am having flashbacks to 1998 when my nearly identical maroon on maroon 91 cougar had blown headgaskets and would stall and not start. Happened at an intersection. Smoking like crazy, pushed it through the intersection and then git it started. Eventually the oil light started flickering. It spun a bearing due to the headgasket and needed a new engine. That Jasper reman'd engine blew its headgaskets during the warranty period and it had to be repaired again. Then I traded the car in on a 1993 Supercoupe. Funny story about the SC was a few years later I saw the telltale smoke from the exhaust and took it back to the same shop that misdiagnosed the headgaskets on the cougar. I told them to check the headgaskets and they were like "you're just paranoid cause of the cougar " I repeated "check the headgaskets" they again tried to say I was paranoid. I repeated a final time "CHECK THE HEADGASKETS!" They finally relented. They called me the next day saying they found...... The headgasket had started leaking. It still cost me $1800 for a headgasket replacement but at least I didn't need a $3600 engine replacement (actually that was the cougar engine, an SC engine was likely even more money).
What I’ve done in the past is take out the spark plugs in the cylinders with the head gasket leak and let it run for a few minutes with those plugs out. That will keep the pressure out of that area and give the head gasket sealer a better chance of working.
Second time I have seen the head gasket repair in a bottle trick. First time was on Roadkill Garage. I would not have believed it until I saw it. I guess there is such a thing as head gasket repair in a bottle. I wonder how long it work for? It probably depends on how big the head gasket leak is? It would be fun experiment to drive it a while just to see how long it will work for?
Blown head gaskets on those 3.8s are common. Everyone I've ever owned has had overheating and coolant issues. Trying to combat this in the Super Coupe swap Mustang I am rebuilding. Really wish I went with something else but younger me thought it was a good idea so trying to follow through and finish a project. ARP head studs and a good set of gaskets is one way to solve it. Draining all the coolant before you dissemble is a huge piece to the puzzle. If coolant gets down in the crank case, you will likely get a rod knock shortly after changing the head gaskets. Anti-Freeze damages the bearings. Have had several that people have changed the gaskets on and then blew it up anyways because of this.
Man, if you had taken photos of when you were stopped at night, (18:00), that would have looked so cool, I think. Kind of a Christine vibe. But a ford, and 33 years newer, but still cool. Keep up the good work.
I recently bought a 2003 Mustang with a blown head gasket with antifreeze mixing in the oil. The car only has 90k miles on the 3.8L engine. Should I just pour the BD in through the radiator or drain the oil first to get the mixture out and then ad the BD through the radiator.
The car was worth a few hundred just for content alone. So whatever it's future it was worth it. Surely won't make much of a profit but maybe someone will get a couple years of cheap transportation. Nice tip on the radiator cap Randy, well done.
I did my 4 cylinder Toyota Camry with half a bottle of Barrs seal as directed. I noticed this blue devil comes out clear and Barrs is a thick heavy resin. Do you know what chemicals are in each? The Barrs did not hold too well, I have to fill it with coolant every 3 to 5 days depending on driving type I'm doing. Would a working sealed by a can head gasket require normal amounts of coolant, much better than what I'm getting or about the same?
Update? I have a Toyota avensis with blown head gasket or cracked head. No smoke from exhaust however lots of over pressure from coolant reservoir. Would definitely try blue devil if it has fixed this. Is it still going?
Very GLAD for you to get (another) LIFT. I remember the other lift you had and had to leave behind (Dodge DART) got done on that one. RANDY, that was in a rented shop and now in YOUR shop - hell yeah! Happy for you. That vette will be sweet! COUGAR - better to try then not try at all. Plus, you resurrect part of youth. Win - Win!

I want a supercharged one

best engine for these is the 4.6 i guess

When that car was sold, the Corvette and Tbird/Cougar were the only American cars with IRS suspension in the rear.
As Vinnie's rather sexy cousin pointed out in Court ... 👌😂
The '88 FWD Cutlass Supremes had IRS. Probably the Grand Prix, Regal, and Lumina or whatever, had it too. But the Vette and T'Bird/Cougar were the only RWD cars with IRS.
Yeah my 91 Grand Prix back had it also. Had a single leaf spring and standard four wheel disc like a corvette too.
Ford was trying to compete against the European luxury cars with the Thunderbird/Cougar/Mark VIII with the fully independent RWD ride quality
I take thermostat out first , then add block sealer and top off with water , let idle till smoke stops , let cool , drain water , replace thermostat add coolant and drive for ever
Exacly bro thats how yo get the better results
I did that to a dodge neon and it still running well

Randy maybe after a while you could take the heads off of the Cougar and show us the after effects of the Blue Devil. Great video thanks.
Agreed !!
I'd like to see that
He would except for he never actually shows himself "rebuilding" anything

Yu put it for the HEAD GASKET ??

Did you have the heat/ defrost on at full so it circulates through the whole system faster? i found that to work also when doing this repair.
Wow. Everyone should watch this to the end. I am sure a lot of people missed it. Great vid Randy! The devil is on the details!

I can attest, they do have a money back guarantee, they did a phenomenal job getting it back to me on a ford 4.0 ohv
Glad to see that blue devil work!! I never heard of it! Might have to get some for my daughters car!
Blue Devil is supposed to be great, I have never used it. I have used the Bars Leak Head Gasket Fix a few times with awesome success.
If thats a push rod engine there notorious for failed head gaskets, Replaced several and it was a cheap and easy fix. Always use felpro head gaskets
Man, if you had taken photos of when you were stopped at night, (18:00), that would have looked so cool, I think. Kind of a Christine vibe. But a ford, and 33 years newer, but still cool. Keep up the good work.
I can’t believe the red corvette is in pieces! Was hoping it was saved
The cougar made Blue Devil go to church 😂😂💀 i luv ur videos bro✌🏾
I recently bought a 2003 Mustang with a blown head gasket with antifreeze mixing in the oil. The car only has 90k miles on the 3.8L engine. Should I just pour the BD in through the radiator or drain the oil first to get the mixture out and then ad the BD through the radiator.
Awesome video I use blue devil when needed. Don't forget you need a wash bin set up to clean parts. 👍
The car was worth a few hundred just for content alone. So whatever it's future it was worth it. Surely won't make much of a profit but maybe someone will get a couple years of cheap transportation. Nice tip on the radiator cap Randy, well done.
That Toyota Sienna van that you made into a convertible do you still have the tailgate for it? If you do I am looking for a trim piece for mine
Blue devil.will try it on a cheap flip car. After confirming it does the trick. Thanks for the video.
I did it today. My car is fixed. I was literally astounded. 10 out of 10. 2002 V6 Accord. 204k miles
Very nice setup for that Atari 800 computer! Was surprised to see that as I still use mine daily as well!
I was trained on that 3.8. Wasn't impressed then. Later owned one. Of course it hemoraged coolant. I never want to own another.
So how’d it go?
Update? I have a Toyota avensis with blown head gasket or cracked head. No smoke from exhaust however lots of over pressure from coolant reservoir. Would definitely try blue devil if it has fixed this. Is it still going?
I love original headlights too, Randy.
Swamp thing: the car that keeps on giving 🤣😂🤣😂 yay free reptiles!!!
Video is clear and sounds good
had a 91 xr7 5.0 the abs brake actuator gave out, its a massive huge one and a pita!
Can we get a vehicle history on swamp thing if there’s any?
OMG, I love your old Atari 800!!
Win - Win!
I actually gave that lift to Weird Beard for free, but thank you I appreciate it.
Glad to see the mercury run 😎
steel seal worked in my 88 cav drove it 7 years no more leaks
Man i love that cougar. Too bad in my country we can't have those. I would love a car like that. Keep up the good work.
I had a 1995 Thunderbird with the 4.6, it burned oil like crazy and it was slow but I still miss that car. Hope to get another MN12 someday!
