Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer: 1 Year Later

  • It's hard to believe it's already been a year since running Blue Devil through my 4Runner. In this video I take you with me to Scott's Automotive and Muffler to test my Head Gasket and confirm wether or not it it still working as advertised, as a fix. Many people are weary of using a liquid sealant to fix radiator leaks or blown head gaskets. Blue Devils claims, and rightfully so, to not clog your coolant system like cheaper and similar products. Give the video a watch to find out if I actually fixed my Head Gasket for under $100.
    This is now my go-to shop for the rare occasion my truck needs to see the doctor.
    Scott's Automotive:
    1508 N Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024
    If you are looking for instructions and help with how to use Blue Devil, check out my video from 1 year ago when I first used it:

    Awesome man!! I had a bad blown gasket in my Toyota Matrix last year and decided to retire the car. Would’ve been crazy expensive to fix. It’s been sitting for a year now and decided to try Blue devil yesterday- (why not). Car now is back up and running like a champ... ridiculously impressed. Can’t believe it worked

A month later and a couple thousand miles, it started running really smooth. I cleaned the spark plug that used to get really fouled, it was pretty clean compared to before devil. Now it runs pretty damn near perfect. Glad I didn't get rid of it in the time it took to work.

    This video is giving me the confidence to dump some of this Blue Devil in. I have a 2004 4runner 6 cyl, 4.0L, the ones that are notorious for this gasket issue( my misfire was in cylinder 6.) Luckily I have never had any overheating issues so far but I am mostly a city driver. It had been acting up for quite sometime before I finally let it run rough on idle (on a cold start) to run the code. What I would usually do is give it some gas and it would push enough water out of the cylinder head after heating up and run fine. I took it to two mechanics where after many attempts at the easier stuff (Changed spark plug, plug itself, fuel injector seal, etc) I finally decided to ask him to do a pressure test on the coolant system from reading much of this issue. After that he said it took two days for there to be enough fluid to see physically. The second mechanic ran a camera down the cylinder and could see a slight amount of water to verify the other mechanics diagnosis. With that being said, it must have a very small crack in the head, hopefully enough for me to get my full 5 years out of it I originally wanted. So far I have had it for three and only put 30,000 miles (extra miles) on it. Right now it is around 177,000. So if Blue Devil can get me another 30,000 to 50,000 ill be a happy cat! Cheers to all the other 4runner owners with these shitty gasket models and issue. Within the week, Sunshine will get her Blue Devil. Now I need to decided if I want to trade it in or just let her see how long she will go.

    • @TrailBendersOverland
      @TrailBendersOverland  3 года назад +2

      Sounds like we had a pretty similar issue. Thing is, you could trade it in even after the BlueDevil. For under $100 you could be driving again with no leak. Sounds like a mild leak and BD would probably work great!

    • @EEPasaurus
      @EEPasaurus 3 года назад +1

      UPDATE: Blue Devil did the job. So far I see no more bubble in the radiator when it is topped off. Once it idled for the 50 minuets, and I drove it for a bit, the check engine light went off. I did not need to clear the code, it went off on it own. However, the traction lights are still on and I'm going to pull the battery for a few minuets and see if they will go away.

    Super good video brother!
    Question for you, as to what product and how much you think I should use. I have a 1995 Subaru 1.8L 4-CYL boxer Impreza, 177,000 miles. I have 76 and 78 PSI dry compression in #2 and 4 of one head (driver side). This started a few days ago, we noticed while on a highway trip the power was weak and I can hear it missing as the RPMs drop from driving to idle.
    I don't have overheating, excessive oil consumption (drippy seals, I add a quart about every 900 miles), smoking, or fluids cross contamination. I'm waiting to have a leak down and another dry/wet compression test at a different shop. The first shop only did dry compression and wasn't too bright or helpful.
    If I end up having a head gasket leak between those two cylinders, what products would I possibly try to mend it? It must not be too bad of a leak, whatever it is, for the compression to build to 78psi dry. The other two good cylinders are 130ish psi.
    If it ends up being a valve leak, what products and strength could I try to get them clean? After cleaning, I will have valve clearances checked, as it's probably never been done.
    I want to see a complete test of all products on all sorts of leak sizes and places. But probably unlikely to ever be done.

What shows real character, is how they behave when they think that nobody will know. But when nobody knows, you usually don't know, so it's nice to have them on camera so that you at least have the evidence of what they claim. And of course, businesses will often be willing to do a little more, for some advertisement, so it should not be a surprise when a business is willing to spend more time when videoed, giving them a return on investment.

    My 2004 Yukon has 143k, not overheating but I see the engine oil cap has that milky color that I have to clean off all the time. It’s not leaking coolant on the ground and the water pump and all is still working strong. But I can tell since it’s a 2004 it’s time and may have a small crack in the gasket somewhere.

    I got my 2003 Ford F150 with 160k and a minor head gasket issue. I have to put blue devil in it every year, right when the weather gets hot... but... I'm at 230k miles right now and it's still running strong. BUT, you've gotta stay on top of flushing and using the blue devil. Will not work on major issues, of course.

      @@josuemagallanes1923 Yes, because the temp goes back up. The assumption is that it just can't hold that long, but also it happens when it gets hot out. Just a heads up, my 2nd gen passed the block tester, however I kept having coolant pushed into my overflow. After sticking a camera into my spark plug holes, it's very clear to me I have a small leak. Don't trust the block test 100%.. I'll be using blue magic to see if it works (after dealership quoted 7k on repair or 14k for a rebuilt engine). Trucks not worth that, so it's a perfect candidate. Just make sure to remove your thermostat if you want to stay on the safe side.

    I had my car overheat and water keep boiling and overflowed over the radiator reservoir. I brought my car to AAACO Car Care. The technician tested and checked it, he concluded the car was blow heat gasket. It costed me $95 for his test.
    I followed your information by using BlueDevil step by step.. Now I can run hours. But at stop signs or at red lights the car is a little higher than normal (the needle show at 55-60% than normal.) Plus the rad reservoir sometimes still boils and a little overflows. But when I drive without stops, then the temperature is lower than normal..
    Do you think I still have blow head gasket? I don't see water in the oil stick and oil cap has no milk chocolate color. No smoke comes out from exhaust pipes.

    • @TrailBendersOverland
      @TrailBendersOverland  3 года назад +1

      Sounds like there might still be a small leak honestly. If there’s bubbles in the reservoir then that’s most likely exhaust gas. Did you leave the blue Devil in for a few days of drain it all immediately after.

    I had a cracked head on my bmw from overheating it due to the expansion tank failing. I put blue devil in it and it would hold for about 8-12 months and then start over heating again and putting air in the coolant system. Mind you I beat the crap out of that car and the head itself was cracked and warped. I’d put blue devil in it again and it would hold for another 8-12 months. I am a firm believer in this stuff tho and always tell people you have to follow the directions on the dot or else it won’t work.

    I believe BD is mostly sodium silicate which is rigid when cured, glass like. It works well on alu head and block as they expand and contract at similar rates but if you had an iron block with alu head it won't work as well. Due to micomovements of the block/head eventually they will fail as sodium silicate has no give.
