  • How does one become an artist/designer/stylist/etc? Here's some no BS advice on how to do it when you're coming from ACTUAL humble beginnings, while we also complain about people who like to pretend to be poor or self-made.

    You know, things i struggle the most with are having no creative community or friends in general. Someone who can understand me while being an artist in some kind too, so we can cry in poor together OR give/receive an actual advice

      Yeah this is the hardest part honestly. Even in cities that are full of creatives, you have to align a lot to work together well

    Not me seeing you drop this after inflating an air mattress at my mom’s tiny apartment because I told the production company I’m contracted with that “I can totally work as a local” because I was desperate to work. This is my first film project in almost a year. If you’re considering a job in the creative field, please don’t forget to consider what 5 other side hustles you can profit from when your creative work doesn’t come through. People way more experienced than me have been out of work way longer.

    18:00 this is such a good point. people who are getting visibility are not using it properly.
    i walk past a gallery on the way to my gym and i see in there this art that looks so inaccessible, and it reminds me of my painting classes (at a public college with 80 yr old professors) and my classmates would try to replicate abstract expressionism without adding anything new. the only reason why abstract expressionism was so popular in the 50s and 60s is because it represented individualism (in the USA). whereas most people cant find a foothold in abstract pieces like this now.
    Its like, why add more nonsense to the pile of conceptual art that no one understands? why not make art that is controversial and exciting and actually speaks to the modern condition?
    because its easier to just follow a formula if you want to be funded.
    i feel like if you cant explain your concept to a random person at a bar without pulling out an art theory textbook you shouldnt be getting funded....

    Omg can’t wait to hear more of you guys!!! Ppl around me have called me a creative person bcs i have skills in drawing nothing more so I won’t consider myself a creative. But i certainly would love to I wish there was more room for creative work as you guys have stated difficulties that come with that especially for anyone who isn’t rich. Capitalism really has sucked the life of the arts I myself can’t find time or energy to get into art even though I’d like to like sowing or pottery making and I think many ppl also feel this way crafty and artsy skills aren’t heard of often and again I think it’s due to Capitalism I wish more ppl would get into those skills I think the world would be a much better place if a social circle would have more crafty skilled ppl that genuinely enjoy what they do.

    It might be just because the country I live in is very small, but going to public openings of exhibitions, or the free events, talks etc that artists that I liked were doing really helped to actually meet those artists and other creatives working on their projects, and in general their creative circle. I would strike up conversation a lot of the time in the smoking area when asking for a lighter, when overhearing an interesting conversation, or just if I had a question about the project. As I would go to different events, sometimes I would see the same people who I briefly talked to before, and that would typically warrant a "hi, how are you? I saw you at ___ event, how was the rest of the night/project etc" and then the conversation would usually lead to talking about what we are both currently working on. Already like that, I have been able to talk about my work with someone who might find interest and would want to work together etc. :))

    • @Radical_Cat
      @Radical_Cat 28 дней назад

      Where I live, these events are usually posted on Facebook and Instagram. But this probably varies in different places.

    when you connect to a model or makeup artist to work on something did you just ask them to work on a random creative project that you were personally working on and then from there later, they were able to connect you to a professional paying job they were working on?

    • @ugh-asif.artpod
      @ugh-asif.artpod  Месяц назад +8

      no, usually it takes awhile to build a portfolio and reputation to start booking paid gigs. working for businesses for free is not a good idea, BUT collaborating with other creatives where none of you get paid is normal bc you are all working towards a common goal - making something to show off your skills

    • @Lisas.Bissistant
      @Lisas.Bissistant Месяц назад +5

      Yes! As Lisa said build your portfolio through projects planned out with other local/young creatives where you can benefit from each other’s talents. Naturally, the more you do this the more people and connections you’ll make whilst building your portfolio; which will lead you to paying jobs.

    I've been working as an illustrator for the past 3 years but I still feel weird about calling myself an artist, because I just think it always sounds pretentious.. I feel like if I introduce myself as an artist, people would get the idea that I'm some kind of untouchable outside thinker that expresses themselves through their artwork, meanwhile in reality I'm just pumping out illustrations for clients, following their demands and instructions, because this is the way I can actually live off of it - and even this is such a privileged and lucky place I'm in

    I have a question, Lisa, do you have any tip to know when someone is really interested in a collab with you?
    I have seen some of my friends thinking that they where gonna get a opportunity or that someone was genuine interested in some collab, but at the end it seem like they where not since the start but they don't wanted to be rude/wanted something for their own profit or even that work was never available or covered even before posting it XD
    Do you have any tip for recognizing wich are real and usefull collabs/offerings or it's just a matter of experience? (Note: They are 18/19 and just started work life, i am interested because i am in that path too now)
    And i loved that party networking part, it's so common to recieve that advice!!

    • @ugh-asif.artpod

      I think it’s just the nature of working in the arts that projects/collars fall through all the time! I’d say you shouldn’t worry too much if someone actually wants to work with you, just offer and try to make things happen, if they don’t cooperate - don’t waste time. They’ll set something up themselves later if they still want to
