What Is War to a Grieving Child? | NYT Opinion

  • Kids didn't start the war in Ukraine. They aren't fighting it. They won't be responsible for ending it. Yet they have suffered deeply and quietly: They have had little say in that awful matter.
In the Opinion video above, though, we hear from Ukrainian children who have lost a parent during the conflict. A team from Opinion Video met them in western Ukraine, at a two-week retreat designed to give grieving kids the space and support to confront their pain and begin to heal.
The program, called Wonder Camp, is part of a support mission in Ukraine by Children of Heroes Charity Fund, an international organization.
“These kids are not part of this war, but they are casualties,” said Brice Espino, the chief executive officer of Children of Heroes, which provided the funding for the camp and gathered the participants. (Ahead Foundation, a Ukrainian group, supplied the camp’s personnel and ran the program.)
Children of Heroes is supporting more than 5,000 Ukrainian children who have lost a parent in the war. The group provides them with educational, housing, legal and psychological support until they turn 18.
“All they want is a normal life,” Espino continued. “We want to remind them there is a bigger world outside of this.”
The children's accounts in the video, and the emotional wounds they reveal, are moving and powerful testimonies to the horrors of war and the damage the conflict has inflicted on Ukraine's most vulnerable - and most innocent - population.

This is heartbreaking beyond words. These kids were living normal happy lives until Russia decided to invade.
Ukraine needs all the help they can get. More advanced weapons mean fewer killed Ukrainians and fewer kids losing their fathers.
Some still have the gall to deny the responsibility of Russians. I've watched countless street interviews from ordinary Russians and the ignorance, complacency, apathy and passiveness from them is mind boggling.
Russians are willfully ignorant about the pointlessness of the war they started and the atrocities they are committing in Ukraine.
Russians seem to be totally fine with the war as long as they are able to hold on to some stolen territory and the Russian TV tells them they are winning.
Once Ukraine takes back all their territories Russians will be forced to deal with the truth and we need to make sure they don't forget what they have done.

I just watched the NYT piece about Ukrainian kids in a grief-therapy camp, after losing a parent in this war. Twice - Ukrainian is as different from Imperial Russian as rural Friesian is from High German. I let my eyes leak a bit, remembering our Papi’s PTSD from his time as a medic on the Ost-Front, and then returning to learn his parents had been murdered, in Sorau. I think I can reassemble the shards…

I witnessed such stories in the middle east after the invasion of iraq and leaving a vaccum that caused a civil unrest for more than 20 years and hundreds of thousands of deaths, and they lied to make people support this war. No grief therapy camps, no kids with background music in a sentimental video. They look where they want you to look, and play on you being kind and emotional to justify an allocation of wealth.
Like Julian assange said (so much for freedom of press there) the war was not meant to be won, the war was meant to never end.

My dear Ukrainian friends, although, there is nothing that I can give that would replace the lost memories and loved ones that you cherish the most, but I will keep all of you alive in my heart and daily prayers in God the Father and Our Lord Jesus Christ. Indeed, the world is with you, yet there are very few who would truly empathise with and listen to your sorrows and grievances except for a few good ones, nevertheless, you are never alone, as you still have Our Blessed Mother Mary, your guardian angels and all Holy Angels, Saints and Souls in Purgatory watching over and praying for you even at this very moment. If you ever need inner spiritual comfort, then turn to your guardian angel for he will comfort and assist you in your hour of need. Besides that, those who perished are never gone but they live on as spirits and will continue to pray for and guide us on earth. Hopefully, the war will come to an end and then we will meet each other again somewhere and sometime. Take care and God bless. Greetings from MALAYSIA.

There are too few words to describe the the level of anguish, sorrow and trauma for these poor Ukrainian children. It is not just Russia's appalling barbarity and genocidal ambitions that has cost them their families and livelihoods but it is also partially the negligence of the world to pay attention to the earlier warning signs of Russia's imperialistic plans since the prelude invasion in 2014 but in the previous decades leading up to the current catastrophic war. The world has tried to prevent 1939 from occurring again but apparently many of Ukraine's allies or former allies lacked prudence, wisdom and courage to deter Russia and now the consequences of the invasion weighed heavily upon their conscience as a result of their apathy and lukewarmness towards true democracy. They should have known that freedom and democracy are not to be taken for granted like a bargaining chip but it is long tedious process that can only be sustained by those who are determined and strong in intellect and will. Otherwise, there is no point in saying "never again" for as long as good men are unwilling to stand against evil in a long-term in defense of humanity, freedom, liberty and democracy.

@@marinebymistake I disagree. Whatever internal resistance that may form will always be less effective at co-opting the population’s preexisting sense of national pride than the establishment, itself.
Call it a Russian Invasion, and Russia will tell its citizens that the USA has targeted all Russians. Call it Putin’s Invasion, and Russia can’t weaponize national identity as effectively in its defense. Russians are far more likely to defend Russia than any given leader.
If you support the war in and of itself, then you’re not gonna feel guilty no matter what your enemies call it.

America did not want to "expand NATO": it was very strong will of Central and Eastern European countries that were extremly determined to join NATO and have protection against Russia - Poland even tried to blackmail the USA president that they would activate Polish people in America to vote against Clinton in elections if he won't agree to letting them into NATO. Also there was no official promise that NATO wouldn't expand - on the contrary, Russian president Yeltsin agreed to this "expansion" after negotiations with Polish president.
Not to mention the most important part: it was a sovereign decision of European nations to join NATO - the same goes to Sweden and Finland today. Europe just needs to unite in order to defend herself from Russian imperialism and NATO provides an excellent structure for that.
And if Russia would like to stop the war she could just pull her soldiers back home and get rid of her imperialism, colonialism and expansionism and focus on her own issues.

@@wawrzynieckorzen78 There was no written promise but a verbal promise, therefore, it is very easy for America to refuse the reality. America always instigated other countries and used them for personal benefit, therefore, I still hold them responsible for the Ukraine war. Please also remember what it said to then-President Mikhail Gorbachev and then how USSR was broken.

    • @wawrzynieckorzen78
      @wawrzynieckorzen78 10 месяцев назад +10

@@YogeshJhala-du8xg Still there is no record of such promise, and after the dissolution the USSR (one of the biggest decolonisation events in XX century when nations mostly peacefully anddemocratically voted for their independence - Ukraine as well as the others) Russian leaders did not oppose so harshly to European nations will to join NATO, however they were eager to start new wars as in Transinistria, Georgia, Chechnya and so on.
And NATO works: Russia did not attack any of NATO members. That is why there is war in "neutral" Ukraine (which borders were guaranteed by Russia in WRITTEN Budapest Memorandum!), not in allied Estonia or Latvia. NATO expands because of Russian aggresive politics, not the other way round.
