Great video, and your data is spot on. I purchased other Garmin dash cams to install in my family's vehicles and after a trial run in my little car with the MINI 3 (an excellent product indeed) I installed it into my daughter's car to complete her system and then purchased the X310 for myself, Garmin products are worth every penny spent and the installation was a breeze after reviewing such videos. Your review and footage were very helpful, thank you.
Hi Josh. I purchased a Garmin dash cam based on one of your previous reviews. I was having a problem linking the camera with the app however, that has been resolved. I switched to a much larger memory card. I agree about the 4k clarity the 1080 works fine for me. My husband purchased a couple off brand names for the other vehicles and they work no problems with very clear filming. Thanks for the review on the new product.
Josh I have to agree - my Garmin dashcam (67W) has had no issues with the heat. I live in a suburb of Phoenix, AZ and it has been rock solid even in 115+ degrees. I have zero desire to upgrade to any other dashcam. Garmin cams are brilliant.
5:37 I can also confirm the quality of garmin dash cams. I’m a truck driver and have used exclusively garmin for the last 10 years and never had one fail on me.
same, i was thinking of upgrading to the x210 or x310, for the possibility to use the new app and i hope in all those years, the quality of the video has increased
Only if you want to store things in the cloud. The camera has an SD card that you can take out and pop into the computer which is completely free of charge.
@@joshjamescars That's exactly what I want to do. I am tired of paying 🤑 money for all of these subscriptions or apps. Which Garmin dash cam do you recommend? I would like to have wide view front and rear coverage but for the rear view I do not want to pay for an outside rear camera because then I will need a shop to do the hardwiring for the rear camera. Would you suggest 2 Garmin separate dash cameras for easy install to cover the rear window hatch on the inside of window?
I currently have a Chortau (Paid $44.00 with all the parking features etc). 170 degree 1080 P front camera and a rear 360 rear camera that is running off the SD MEMORY CARD. It works great! I won a lawsuit with this dashcam. HOWEVER, the problem I am currently having is that the converter which is Movavi video converter wants a 54.00 per month subscription for me to view dash camera footage. Note: This used to be free but now they require a paid subscription.🤑 Do you have any suggestions for me? Get another dash camera? Find another converter? If so how do I find another converter? Which dash camera out there including Garmin one operates in the same fashion without having to use a smartphone or an app. / wi-fi which does require a paid $$ subscription? The Garmin does use a SD MEMORY CARD so why can't I use that without having to use a smartphone with it?
Hello! I’m not sure why you’d need to convert files from the dash cam to view them and I’m afraid I can’t really answer most of your question because the scenario you describe doesn’t make sense to me. I never advise people buy off brand things, though. So the fact that you paid $44 for the camera tells me that they have to get your money elsewhere which might explain some of the fees you’re talking about. Regarding the camera I would buy something different. With the Garmin cameras, you don’t need to use the app unless you really want to and you can just put the SD card in the computer and view any files you want without needing a video converter.
@joshjamescars Thanks for the information. 👍 I'm glad I can use Garmin via SD MEMORY card. It's a brand name. I don't expect Garmin to go out of business like Chortau did, leaving no support for their products. I must state, though, that this chortau is an excellent 1080 P 170 DEGREE wide view. (I won a case from this $44.00 dash cam from a private law firm 2 yrs. ago when there was no fee), 🤑but now the Movavi converter wants $54.00 per month subscription) that is no good if I can't play back information for retrieval to police/insurance/law firm. I now am a subscriber of your channel. Thank you for your prompt responses.👍
Are there any dash cams that don't require a paid subscription for wifi or an app. For data retrieval? I do not want another paid subscription.🤑 On another note regarding your video recording at the end of your video, is the location in Texas in Waco area? I only ask because here in california we have 10 times the traffic you show on your video at the times of your recordings that you cannot see license plate numbers. I know here you will see plates because of of the HEAVY TRAFFIC VOLUME in California.🤢🤮
If you want to interact with your camera over a network connection (meaning not be right by it to connect with Bluetooth) that will ALWAYS require a subscription because that would be like getting cell phone service for free. So sadly, I believe the answer to your question is no. As for my video, I am in Texas but I live in Austin! So just south of Waco.
What about a dashcam using an SD memory card that you can use /view on your personal computer at home.? No interaction with using phone?@joshjamescars
Thanks Josh. Do you have an install video as well? That would be super helpful to see how you route the wires. Also do you have one in the rear as well or just the front
Hello! I do, and you can find that here: ruclips.net/video/sGD-93mAtPo/видео.html As for rear, we don’t have one in any of our cars; routing wiring for that in a crossover with a liftgate or barn door can be quite tricky.
Had my tandem for 3 years then it just stopped working a couple of weeks ago. Hence why I am on this site trying to source some advice on getting a new model.
The problem is not the dashcam but the app. It's never been upgraded or improved since I got the dashcam. And trying to get a video onto your phone is hit or miss at best. Trying to show the footage to the police after a collision would be a trying experience at best. I even contacted Garmin to ask about it but never received a response. No customer service at all.
No your dash cam is a 1440p (2K) dash cam. 4K is 2160p. Also, I haven’t found any dash cam mobile app that works well since it requires a ton of data to be streamed over a proprietary network.
Thank you for the video. For one, I didn't realize until re-reading the specs the x310 had a battery for Park Guard. I was reading other comments that tipped me off. I assumed you needed an OBD2 power cable to utilize Park Guard. My only concern, and this may be due to RUclips quality is @9:13 I couldn't read the plate on the truck in front of you. The reason it's important to read plates is a family member had items stolen from their car (while it was running) and it was dark out. My concern is this would wash out any opportunity to get plate information.
Hello! Yes, all their cameras except for the Mini models have an internal battery. Because of this, you don’t need to use the OBD2 adapter for parking guard if you don’t want to. As for license plates, if your vehicle’s headlights are directly on the vehicle ahead of you, you won’t be able to make out the plate. License plates by law need to be reflective and that’s what happens when you shine a light at a reflective object. Now about your concern regarding auto theft-first, it’s a safe bet that on the car that the thieves are driving, the plates are stolen or fake. Even the dumbest criminal knows not to use a plate with any kind of identifier that could be traced back to them. So that won’t get you very far. What you really ought to be thinking of instead of a dash cam is how you can install either a security camera at your home somewhere that would catch the events in question. AND OR I would also recommend a camera like the Garmin Tandem which has an interior lens so instead of just getting a fake/stolen plate you could possibly get a close-up of a face. Hope this helps!
So if I’m understanding correctly the park mode feature runs from the internal battery. How long does it last? What if I have my car parked for ten hours? Will it record events during this ten hours in park mode?
If you live in Texas ..definitely worth it. It’s the number one deadly car accident state. Just moved here from Utah and man drivers here are bad bad. I bought one today after leasing a car yesterday 👍🏽
Can't be worse than COMMIEFORNICA. IT'S the worst here than anywhere else.🤢🤮 Most dangerous drivers with no licenses, auto insurance, hit n runs, road rage and shootings.
The garmin cameras are great, the major problem is you pay 400 for a 4K camera and then if you want to use live feed or connect the camera via WiFi you have to pay a fee every month! It should be possible to use the live feed or receive notifications in parking mode if we can connect the dash cam to a hotspot or WiFi network.
I somewhat agree… but it’s important to remember that a dash cam isn’t meant to function like a home security camera. And paying a fee to have live access isn’t unreasonable at all. Any device that has always-connected data is going to require a data plan and charge you a fee. That said, Ring makes a “dash cam” that I believe works exactly the way you want it to. It does require a data plan if you want to live view away from home, but I believe it works like any ring camera when you’re on your home WiFi network. Update: looks like they may have pulled it from the market… but here’s the detail page: ring.com/products/car-cam
I’ve had the 47 and a mini one for a few years now. They’re awesome. In my opinion the best dash cams for the money. The 47 even has forward collision warning and notification of traffic moving in front of you from the stop light. There couple of things don’t like about them though. First, the collision warning is way too sensitive even on the lowest setting, so I had to mute the sound. Secondly, there’s no additional camera on the back of it to record the interior of the car or the back window, like the ones popular with Uber drivers. As for the $400 dash cam, I personally don’t think it’s worth the money. I don’t see the need for 4k quality of the footage. I will rarely review it anyway.
Are you using a polarized lens on your Garmin Dash Cam 67W, because your videos are so clear. If you are, can you please spread the word, because Garmin does not make a lens for the 67w.
That’s a pretty costy price for a dash cam. But I’m afraid if I just buy one from an unknown company and download their software oh my phone, who knows where my personal info will get send to. Keep the great work sir
As someone who works in tech and has worked in cybersecurity, you’re absolutely right to be cautious there! The low cost of their cameras means the companies are making profit elsewhere, if you know what I mean.
I have on older models… all the alerts seem to happen about a second later than I would want them to which to me makes them semi useless because by then I’d have noticed things myself. It doesn’t feel as well calibrated as the systems that are built into most cars these days.
I have the 67W. My question is: can I use the same Parcking power cable for this X310. This because I have already the Parcking Mode Cable installed on my car that I bought for the 67W.
I had the dealer do it since it requires a partial disassembly of the ADAS housing and wiring (there’s a separate wiring harness you need to get and that all plugs into the same wiring that connects to the ADAS camera system up in the windshield and headliner).
I’m not sure what line assistance is. The driver assist features in my opinion are a bit too slow to react. Not nearly as good as the built-in ADAS features in most modern vehicles.
Thanks for the review Josh! Does the new lineup of Garmin dash cams come with a magnetic mount? I’ve only seen that the new Garmin dash cams include an adhesive mount. Also, what are your thoughts on the X110 at its 199.99 price point? I’m seeing the 67W for $198.99 on Amazon so I wonder if it might be better to go with the 67W over the X110 with a $200 budget
I believe they do, though I’m not entirely sure. I used a suction cup mount for my testing of this one. That aside, I really like my 67W for the 180-degree field of view, and if you can get it for $198 that’s a really good deal.
They come with a small metal disk that adheres to the windshield. And then a plastic mount that attaches to the ball on the camera and has a magnet in it mates to the disk. So yes, 110, 210, and 310 come with magnetic way to disconnect most of the stuff and put it away only leaving the little metal disk on the windshield.
Image sharpness is mainly dependent on resolution so you’d want the X310 for 4K if that’s the case. Frame rate is only how many frames per second the camera is capturing. You may see a little bit more motion with 120fps but it won’t change the sharpness or quality.
was thinking of buying x110 for front and mini 3 for rear. but they're still too expensive to get 57 is nice to have but i prefer going for usb-c on everything
You need to record at 4K if you want detail. Regardless of frame rate, a 1080p image is always going to be kind of soft especially when it comes to fine details.
4K vs 1080p for reading of license plates (particularly at a distance, or a night when they often become over-illuminated) is there really no noticeable difference?
Not really. The only time you actually need to read license plates is when someone is right up on you anyway. I do like my 1440p 67W though, but mostly for the 180-degree field of view.
Its hard to read number plates or signs with this right? How can you prove anything? I'm asking because this particular model claims to be a 4k! Its perhaps great to share a route with the community or your friends perhaps.
I’m not sure why exactly you’d say that when it’s clear from the footage that with the 4K resolution it’s pretty clear. The only time I had issues with it was at night because modern cars’ LED headlights completely wash out reflective plates. But that’s not the camera’s fault.
that video quality is insanely good for a dash cam. such nice colors and clarity, just like a gopro. makes the pricepoint justified, but i myself wont buy it for now.
It definitely is, I agree! But I think to your point the subset of the general population who needs or wants a dash cam that can produce GoPro quality footage is pretty small.
Action cameras have a tendency to overheat especially if used for prolonged periods and or in direct sunlight, where this Garmin does not, so in that case it might be worth it!
Josh: So I'm using this dashcam Me: Right right right.... but what abt that gold Cartier👀😁, that bracelet blind me so I had to replay the video again. 5am? Dude go back to bed is to early nie.
Hahaha! I’ve been wearing it here and there but I guess it hasn’t been as noticeable. 😂 That was my gift to myself for our 10th anniversary earlier this year. And I know, I went in early but I had to otherwise it wouldn’t be dark out. 😅

I’m not sure what line assistance is. The driver assist features in my opinion are a bit too slow to react. Not nearly as good as the built-in ADAS features in most modern vehicles.
@joshjamescars thank you very much Josh
I hated the Garmin app. If your iPhone has the VPN enabled, it won't connect to the camera.
I don’t ever use any dash cam app-I don’t think any of them are super useful. Better to just insert the SD card into your computer.
For my Golf 8.5 R Line the best is the 67w or x310 plz??
It depends whether you value higher resolution more (X310 with 4K) or wide field of view more (67W with 180-degree lens).
Thanks for the review Josh! Does the new lineup of Garmin dash cams come with a magnetic mount? I’ve only seen that the new Garmin dash cams include an adhesive mount. I believe they do, though I’m not entirely sure. I used a suction cup mount for my testing of this one. That aside, I really like my 67W for the 180-degree field of view, and if you can get it for $198 that’s a really good deal.

Considering only the FHD resolution, is the image better in quality and sharpness with the 30FPS HDR setting or 60 (X210) / 120 FPS (X310)?
Image sharpness is mainly dependent on resolution so you’d want the X310 for 4K if that’s the case. Frame rate is only how many frames per second the camera is capturing. You may see a little bit more motion with 120fps but it won’t change the sharpness or quality.
Josh do you know what is the lens aperture for the x310?
I do not, apologies! You might reach out to Garmin for that

Can you please give your opinion which settings is best suited to capture details. What you think about 1080p/120fps VS 4K/30fps?
You need to record at 4K if you want detail. Regardless of frame rate, a 1080p image is always going to be kind of soft especially when it comes to fine details.

USB-C into the camera but USB-A to the car.

You can set it to between 15 second and 2 minute clips so it’s up to you how you want to manage it.

Another great video. 👍🏻 Hey, totally unrelated… I love your bracelet. It’s wicked nice. ⭐️
Thank you!! On both counts! ;)
If you have a problem download from sd card to your computer 32gb should give you plenty for the day.
Any concern with the x210 60 fps VS x310 120 fps
120fps can only happen at 1080p resolution. You can’t do 4K at 120fps so it’s all a wash.
that video quality is insanely good for a dash cam. such nice colors and clarity, just like a gopro. makes the pricepoint justified, but i myself wont buy it for now.
It definitely is, I agree! But I think to your point the subset of the general population who needs or wants a dash cam that can produce GoPro quality footage is pretty small.
30 fps looks quite bad actually! Does it have 60 fps on 4K?
No, you can do 60 at either 1080 or 1440 but not 4K.
How about car videos? My guess is that the 310 would be preferred, although the Insta360 at 8K may be a better choice.
Action cameras have a tendency to overheat especially if used for prolonged periods and or in direct sunlight, where this Garmin does not, so in that case it might be worth it!
I have the 57 and its not 1080 p to 60fps its 1440 to 30fps
Josh: So I'm using this dashcam
Me: Right right right.... but what abt that gold Cartier👀😁, that bracelet blind me so I had to replay the video again.
@@joshjamescars well she was looking at me like"hey...I'm here so let me blind you".
I know that's right..salute to the 10k gift
👍
If the view is 180 instead 140 it would be better :( its high price why 140
Completely agree!! It’s a miss on the 310 for sure.
@@joshjamescars but im about to buy it , is 140 good enough to have a clear road view capture ?
That’s for you to decide. There’s a comparison clip in this video. You can still find the old Dash cam 67W if you’d rather have the 180 view.
Seems like the mini 3 is the Best Buy, you don’t really need 4K to capture an insurance scammer trying to set you up for insurance claims
The mini 3 doesn’t have a battery for parking guard, which for me is a must.
@ true I think the entry X model has plus it has GPS as well
@gannas138 Yes! That and the battery are the two things omitted from the mini to make it so smal.
