      Ryan Moskal Thanks Ryan. I make the videos by myself so it's a lot of work to get a successful outcome. Quite a few that I have done haven't proved useful because I stand in front of the camera too much or I didn't notice the camera turned itself off (it does that a lot) :) and constantly thinking about the camera means I'm not thinking about the painting as much as I should. I hope to do more one day.

    Thank you for sharing your videos, they are inspiring. After working with acrylics for a few years, I'm getting into plein air painting with oils. I really like way you use your brushes. Could you recommend a set that would fill the large and small needs of plein air painting? Also, what are you using for your camera, it looks like it does a wonderfull job of capturing the colors both in your painting and of the scene? Looking forward to viewing the rest of your videos.

    • @AndyDolphinArtist

      Brushes come and go. I've actually gone back to standard hog bristle, but these were "cheap" synthetics. I used a Canon DSLR to shoot the video in 720p. The biggest problem with my model is it has a ten minute limit, so I have to remember to keep restarting it :)

    I love this video, I keep coming back to this. What are you using for your medium?

    • @Legotron
      @Legotron 8 лет назад +1

      Alkyd medium and few drops of mineral spirits! 😝

    • @AndyDolphinArtist
      @AndyDolphinArtist  8 лет назад

      +Khanh Ngo That's it :) The brand I tend to use is Art Spectrum's "Liquol", because it's Australian and matches the brand of paint I use. Many artists use W&N Liquin, and there are other brands to choose from.

    Hey Andy. Nice work, particularly like your brush strokes. Speaking of which, there's one cloud highlight you laid down within the tree at left - your next stroke was in the middle of the sky (w/o cleaning your brush) - how did you keep the green from the tree from tainting the brush/colour?

    • @AndyDolphinArtist
      @AndyDolphinArtist  7 лет назад

      Sometimes colours do get picked up. I try for it not to happen but with plein air, I tend to move pretty quickly so it's not always avoidable. Sometimes I get away with it :)

    Excuse me, about the reddish background that you give to the canvas before you start painting. Wait until it dries or paints the surface of it being fresh ?.
    thanks and good work. :)

    • @AndyDolphinArtist
      @AndyDolphinArtist  5 лет назад

      Thanks Ronald. The red wash dries a little bit because it's very thin and soaks into the gesso primer but I don't wait for it to dry. I don't always use a wash.

    over the course of painting, do you tend to paint in thin layers especially in the beginning? I just wonder because when I paint, I tend to put too much paint on my brush causing my painting to look muddied.

    • @AndyDolphinArtist
      @AndyDolphinArtist  9 лет назад +5

      Yes. I start thin, sometimes using solvent (turps, low odour or mineral spirits) or some alkyd medium (similar to Liquin), or sometimes just spreading the paint thinner or even rubbing it it with a clean, lint-free rag. Also, try to avoid adding white as much as possible until the thicker, lighter layer. White is a short-cut to mud.
      Holding the brush flatter and not doing repeat brushstrokes as you progress can also help to stop the paint digging into the bottom layer.

    • @krnhth
      @krnhth 9 лет назад

      ***** Thank you! This is really helpful, especially your suggestion about brush strokes. I find that my paintings starts to look patchy because I make similar strokes.
