Running Toward the Light

  • For a young Peter Johnson, Christmases were never the same after his parents divorced. He felt a deep hole in his soul that he longed to fill.
Like Peter, all humanity longs to live in love and safety. Such a desire is basic in all of us. But finding that peace isn’t always easy. Often, we seek peace and security from the very people, who themselves, are struggling. The world is filled with many distracting and deceiving voices that claim to have the answer to the happy life.
But, as Peter learned, when we come to hear His voice-the voice of Him who overcame the world, whose voice is pure love-then we come to discover our true identity. We gain a glimpse of our eternal self. We sense our nobility as a son or daughter of God. We have new personal power. We are no longer distracted and deceived by fake voices. We hear the one true voice that heals aching hearts and wounded souls-voice of Jesus Christ.
He is eager to help. He knows each of us. He awaits our invitation.
“When you’re running from the darkness, it’s a feeling of fear,” Peter said. “But when you’re running towards the light, it’s hope. You know you’re running to strength and peace and happiness. We all need to be running to the light.”

I was at Elder Johnson’s baptism. It was a moment you just knew that someone very special had joined the Lord’s Church. I also saw him on his mission ... saw him teach ... played basketball with him on a Pday. He was the perfect combination of humility and pure power. When I became completely bedridden, he came to see me in my home. Of anyone that I have ever gotten to know personally, he radiates light more than any other.

@@JamesCraigWhoop - On the court, he was nothing but silky smooth! He was quick and had a sweet shot. He was the star in high school. I remember watching him play when he was a senior in high school. My family and I were in the church parking lot when we saw him and he told us that he was there to met with the Bishop to get his ecclesiastical endorsement to play for byuh. He wasn’t a Christian then, but the light of Christ burned within him even then.
Like I said before, his countenance radiates pure goodness. In some unimaginable way, when he looks at you or speaks to you, even in a crowded room, it’s as though it’s just the two of you completely alone and that you’re the most important person in the world to him. I count myself truly blessed each time I get to interact with him.

Max Sage - Educate yourself before making comments. Latter-day Saints do read the Holy Bible. It's ok not to agree with the beliefs but at least make a true statement. What's your purpose in your comment? If it's to tear down a person's faith then that says more about you than anything. You're obviously looking for something because you took the time to CHOOSE a message by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Good luck to you and finding what you need.

By the end of the video I was in Tears , moved from the couch in my living room to my bedroom bawling and praying to my Heavenly Father! Then I prayed asking him to help me have more faith , help me to dispel discouragement when challenges come and to help me know how he knows me and knows everyone else in this world at the same time! Then I went to brush my teeth and had the thought to Wright “ I am a a child of God” on my mirror. I did just that. I like to believe that’s inspiration from the lord leading me!

I had an experience like this for many years. After being challenged to read the Book of Mormon daily, with a promise from an apostle of God that husband and wife will be kinder to each other and children will be more respectful of their parents, I accepted the opportunity. I realized I wanted anything in my life with that kind of power.
As I read daily, even if it was only one word before there was a child in my lap,I learned. Not only did I find my family became kinder in ever increasing amounts, we were becoming more stable.
My fascination with studying the scriptures increased. Ideas I had never thought of would come into my mind and in curiosity, I would seek for greater truth to confirm or expand upon those thoughts.
I have learned that the Book of Mormon is written according to a structure that will nourish and expand the mind of any reader.
Daily Reading will unscramble your mind. You will be able to find your way out of serious problems. You will learn how to remove danger. You will learn how to love a wayward child back into the gospel.
That book will become a source of the peace you feel from strong leaders in the church. Your prayers will be answered and you will be able to comprehend why those answers are the perfect ones for you.
And one day, shortly, you will be able to say you are better off because of this book.
      The Book of Mormon works.

I used to think of how blessed I was to have been raised in a family who knows and lives the gospel.
Now I know that I am blessed. those years of adolescence I spent rebelling or rejecting their values seem so petty but like he said in the video, it was experience that I’d rather not have gone through, yes but not experience that defined me.
Personally, I’ve always acknowledged god and at least kept him at a safe distance because in my heart, what I feared was what I knew all along.
And that was that ‘God so loved me that he sent his son Jesus Christ, not to condemn me but that through him, I might be saved.’
And the same is true for all the rest of his children.
I was afraid before because I was ashamed that the things I’d done to distance my self from god out of fear weren’t forgivable.
I testify that he does, and I know that even as these thoughts crossed my mind, i was already forgiven, and he still forgives me, I only had to run into the light, where his arms will always be waiting to receive me.

Brother Johnson would be the kind of person I would love to have gospel discussions with. He sure has overcame a lot! I certainly didn't grow up in his circumstances but I have a lot of friends who did. This was beautiful.

I wish I could promise the best and favorite of settings, but if you would like to have "gospel discussions" with someone, you can start with listening to the Holy Ghost. You'll "have a thought/feeling/impression/etc" to do something, or that something is good, true, and positive. Learn to act on these feelings. You can browse around the web-site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to learn more, or if you prefer actual people, seek to meet with missionaries. Church meetings are starting to open up, depending upon where you live. You are welcome to visit there too. If you're interested, seek to find out the latest information about meetings. Even though everyone is unique, the Holy Ghost can "bring people together" that are "just right to strengthen one another". That has happened to me more times than I know in life! Listen and strive to act upon good feelings, thoughts, etc. It will lead you to a better life than you can imagine! I can truly promise that! Best of wishes on your personal journey!

I served my mission in much of the inner city in Minneapolis and I met such amazing saints there people who's faithfulness and kindness changed me more than I ever changed them it was a fantastic experience and I am grateful to the Lord to be able to serve them. We need to remember to serve each other and not ourselves just like the Lord.

Thanks for mentioning how healthy examples of parents meant so much for you! Sometimes we simply have no idea our example means to others. In this case, it was simply seeing someone (a married couple) that became one of his "good examples". I've been going through a hard time with reaching the empty nest stage of life. It''s really hard for me! It's lead me to ponder a lot what it's like to be in Heavenly Father's shoes. He's had a lot of "kids" that rejected the opportunity to become "like Him". We're truly "in the Latter-Days", which is an honor and blessing, as well as a trial. We are truly blessed in more ways than we may realize ... which truly reflects on Heavenly Father's love for every single one of us. He truly does hope and strive to help each of us become worthy to return to His presence! He misses us in a way and depth only He knows! Part of becoming "like Him" is to completely forget Him, then progress through life's journey with faith in Jesus Christ and truly learning to become faithful in obeying the gospel and keeping our covenants. Nothing makes Heavenly Father more happy and feeling grateful that one of His children is truly grateful for Him! I'm grateful for this video and your comments too!

I had similar experience when I was a young man. I was led to toward the light. I know that there is a Father in Heaven who is aware of all of us. If only we will show humility and seek Him, we will find Him in ways the world could most often never comprehend. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is God's kingdom here on Earth. I have looked forward to that day when the Lod Jesus Christ will again return to Earth for His Second Coming - I know this will happen. The world will witness His power and glory.

As I grew up, my father was not there not there due to mental health problems. As I grew older I found that I was alone much of the time and looked toward my faith and the Savior. I served him as a missionary in Finland and other church callings over the years. Then my health went done hill and I began question my faith in a Heavenly Farther. The medical professionals and technology has proven to me the God does love me and I am not alone.

The Lord plucked me off the street and brought me home to His church and how happy I am about this. "Disillusionment is indeed part of life, but it is not my identity". Thank you for remembering this. I am a daughter of God and I love Him.
