Another great song from my hippie days. Carpet lined interiors...blankets, pillows, bongs...I wish I was back there. I was happy back then. Not a care in the world. Everyone knew someone that had one. This is folk, soft rock. Sammy said he considered himself a conservative hippie, in an interview. He passed in 2013 at age 66. No cause was ever explained. The A Team used a GMC van. Chevy is also a General Motors. Great song, thanks Harri.

Great California hippie late 60's, early 70's folk song... Glad someone found it and reviewed it...
It is what has led to the Millenials and Gen Z here in the US to sell everything, buy a van and cruise the country. In the 60's and 70's it was focused out west, though there were spots that "van" culture took root.

Lol. yeah my father bought a customized van with a unicorn painted on the side. The seats in the back would flatten out to make a bed. My mother was a bit annoyed when my father came home with it. :) She thought it looked childish. We had some nice road trips in that van though. It also had a great stereo system in it. I remember blasting Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" on a cassette when I got to drive it.

He let us take it on condition we brought it back with a full tank. We picked my date up first, and when her dad saw the van, he said you have two choices. Ditch the van for a respectable ride, or make room in the van for her dad to chaperone. We ran home and exchanged the van, for more respectable transportation..

What a great memory! In 1975 (the year this song came out), a lot of people hitchhiked and those Chevy vans were all over the place. Pardon my French, but we called them "f*ckmobiles. Most of them had a decal on the back window that said "Grass, gas or ass", as in how are you going to pay for your ride? Many guys had their vans tricked out with mattresses and coolers with beer in them. If you were a guy and you wanted some action, a Chevy van would insure that you got it! Not trying to sound sexist, it's just those were the times. Attitudes between men and women were a lot more laid back (no pun intended) than they are now. Just a great song! He had another hit called "The Last Game Of the Season (The Blind Man In the Bleachers)". It's a real tearjerker.

I remember people having these scenes painted on their vans. Inside would look like a small bedroom or living room. They had shag carpet and mini fridge in them. Alot of girls were told, after seeing the van, No you aren't going out with him! Lol

customizing vans was very popular back in the 70's. I used to work for a place that sold kits and did conversions. my dad had one done for the family to vacation in. but yeah some were a rolling bedroom and that's about it. some even had waterbeds (which is a bad and crazy idea)

I had a VW micro bus, I can relate. It’s funny but we never really thought about genres it was all rock/pop or radio rock. I don’t know how this whole genre thing got started. This song is such a time capsule.

Oh yeah, they were very popular. They would have elaborate murals air brushed on the sides of the vans.
They were basically self contained. A “tiny house!”

Vans were very popular in The US in the late 60’s and through the 70’s. Kinda like pickup trucks now. I went to a van in 1977. Hundreds of vans congregating for a party weekend.

Not sure if you take suggestions from these comments but I'd like to recommend the studio version of Simon and Garfunkel "El condor pasa" .... It's a lost gem from their early recordings that virtually no one ever reacts to but as a fan I think you'll like it a lot.

why do people insist on labeling every thing and everyone? As I get older I realize life, people and music are never that simple. growing up in the 60's and 70's we listened to every thing from country to motown. we enjoyed the company of friends and neighbors we didn't lable everything just accepted and appreciated different views.

It wasn't just Chevy vans, all vans were popular to customize in the 60's and 70's. When I was in high school in the late 60's, my dad had a Dodge van converted to a camper. I went to pick up a girl for a first date driving the van and her father wouldn't let her go with me unless I was driving a car.

Chevy van was popular, but Ford and Dodge also had vans. Typically for cargo or bus usage, the cargo vans were converted to functional housing of a sort in the 70s. Also, this era was pre HIV/AIDS so the activity extolled here was less risky.
