- Welcome to our first-time reaction to the Blue Beetle movie. Let the symbiosis begin as we dive into the superhero genre. This film introduces us to Jaime Reyes. This was a fun origin story for the superhero known as Blue Beetle. It had some great comedy (especially once we got past act 1), some really fun action sequences, excitement, and the exploration of what would happen if a mystical blue scarab were to fuse with someone giving them a super suit and full access to create anything they can imagine.
Watch as we witness one of the oldest comic book characters first movie appearance! Played by non other than Xolo Maridueña which most of you know from Cobra Kai who've we've been hearing such great things about.
His performance was fantastic but what really sold this movie to us was how well they recreated the family dynamic. Once they got that going this movie was such a fun ride.
The director Angel Manuel Soto did such a phenomenal job at creating scenes that were both relatable to the latino audience but also inherently funny. Like that Vicks Vaporub moment (If you know you know)
We hope you enjoy our reactions and commentary as we delve into the character's rich lore, and discuss the impact of Blue Beetle on the superhero genre, DC, the DC Extended Universe etc. There's a bunch of things to like about this film and for his first appearance on the big screen Jaime Reyes and the rest of his family really grew on us.

The acctress that portayed Jenny is Bruna Marquezine, a brazillian actress, and I love that she spoke a little portuguese in that scene with Susan Sarandon, she gave much pride to us brazillians as well, such a great movie!!

As sad as the scenes are. Xolo Mariduena absolutely kills sad, crying, and scared scenes. He gets very emotional with his voice and face. He’s definitely gonna be absolutely amazing throughout his career and I can’t wait to see it!

brazilians were so excited to see Bruna Marquezine playing Jenny LOL She's been acting since she was a little girl here in Brazil, this is her first international movie, it was very gratifying, even more in the scene that she speaks portuguese, the audience went crazy here, that’s so funny
Coming from a 47 year old completely white guy :) i loved this movie so much, my wife is Hispanic and every scene with the family reminds me so much of being at my wife's grandmother's house filled with aunts uncles and cousins. The movie had a lot of heart, good action, Xolo is so good and charismatic in the role. I have been a life long DC comics fan and of all the DC's movies this has been one of my favorites, they don't have to be so dark and moody to be great. I the writer/director said it was a love letter to the Hispanic family and i think he succeeded with it.

I'm a big Flash fan but The Flash(2023) was such a mediocre film that it literally hurt me & it made me mad🤬 cause The Flash is one of the cooler superheroes in comics period. It would be easy to make a great Flash movie but they screwed it up.

If you watch any of the animated DC movies with Jaime Reyes in it, he is an actual teenager and the jokes about his hormones and everything are so much funnier because of that 😂

it didnt do well in the theatres but everyone i talked to who saw it really liked the movie. hopefully streaming can make it a cult classic. my man Xolo aka Miguel aka Jayme was amazing for his first lead movie roll.

I honestly don’t know why people are saying “ it’s a flop” when this movie was sooooo good it made me cry so much with the family they directed so well like it’s a different vibe. Because we actually have some heart in the characters. And don’t even get me started on the family is soo hilarious

Flop means flopped at the box office, people are saying that because it didn’t make the money back it needed to by a long shot. The reviews were all really good. Usually when people refer to a movie being a flop it’s relating to the box office of the film
I’m glad that James Gunn confirmed that Blue Beetle will be played by the same actor in the new DC Uiverse.
I like him but I just wished he would've given Henry a sendoff Superman film there's elseworld stuff Joker is its own universe why not adapt kingdom come with Henry it just felt a little tonedeaf everyone was so excited about Henry coming back why not give him a nice sendoff for him and the fans that doesn't impact your own Superman film at all
Xolo was born for this role, such a great, fun movie, kind of reminded me of a more old school comic book movie.
Great supporting cast as well.

Fun fact: the Blue Beetle suit is a real suit that was built, and not fully CGI. Now sure, some of the scenes, especially during action scenes, have to use more CGI, but it's mainly a practical effect. I love it so much, it is in my top 3 favorite live action comic book suits.

@@OfficialMediaKnights Last month Gunn mentioned that Jaime Reyes will be "an amazing part" of the DCU going forward and just this week, Gunn specifically mentioned 3 actors that will be continuing their roles- Xolo Maridueña, John Cena, and Viola Davis. I think his calling out Xolo alongside those other 2 speaks volumes of how much Gunn thinks of him.

Son many references in this film for example María la del barrio famous telenovela starring and performed by Thalía and in the ending scene the iconic song "Nada Personal" performed by one of the greatest bands of all time in argentina and latin america Soda Stereo. Definitely exceeded my expectation. Came to watch solely because of the suit and ended up falling in love with Reyes family.

@@angelestrada9552 okay first, reread my comment. Second, I'm a huge Blue Beetle fan and I LOVED the movie. I only meant that for people who don't know much Spanish it was hard to follow what they were saying during those times. There are no subtitles or were none when I went to see the movie when it first came out. That is all I meant . Not everyone speaks multiple languages. I can speak some Spanish, read and write in Latin and Ancient Greek, I teach myself other languages also. I love different languages and other people's culture. Don't try to start an argument and call me a racist. My brother is Hispanic. I'm not a racist. Hell, because my brother is Hispanic, I've been teaching myself Spanish.

I LOVED watching your reaction to this movie! As a middle-aged honky, I know I missed a bunch of cultural references in the scenes with Jaime's family, so I was really happy to see that they resonated with the people being represented! I enjoyed the living hell out of this movie and your reaction--especially when the suit spoke Spanish to Jaime!
This movie was incredible!!! I love Jaimie Reyes Blue Beetle and this movie captured his personality and fighting style perfectly. If you ever want a fantastic DC show, the animated Young Justice show was amazing and Jaimie joins the cast in later seasons.
Funny you mentioned the lanterns cause the scarab was created as an answer to the green lanterns

@@OfficialMediaKnights Exactly, the reach (who reacted the scarab) are planetary dominators. In the lore they made an agreement with the lanterns to stop invading planets but being who they were they still devices other ways they created scarabs and sent them to planets to take a host and then use the host to infiltrate and kill the planet. The reach would then come in as helpers and basically take over the planet from there. Jaimes suit somehow got damaged and this cleared all the directives in it (basically erased all the memory). This is why Jamie isn't slave to the suit. If all went well, jaime would be trapped in the suit while the scarab took over.
I went and saw it with my Mexican roommate. He wanted to see a movie and i suggested this one. He liked it a lot. So did i. I liked the family dynamic as it was wholesome and so far removed from my own childhood in the best way.
All the actors did great. I liked mama the best.
So glad I paid attention in my Spanish classes. The grandmother was so funny and had the best dialogue.

fun, the family relationship is very good, action scenes are very good, visual effects are good, costumes are wonderful
(just like comics and animations) exciting at times. I already knew the character from the animation Justiça Joven. the negative part that I noticed was the very caricatured villains.
I hope James Gunn adds Blue Beetle to his new universe and Xolo continues playing this wonderful character.
This movie was going up against insane odds. Writers strike PLUS the news about the DCU being completely redone (and not knowing if this movie was gonna be canon or not) PLUS Marvel fatigue (superhero fatigue) PLUS actors strike making promotion impossible PLUS a character not as well known as Superman. Really wish it did better in theaters bc it’s such a fun ride, but the film had hard odds to overcome

Most superheroes keep their secret identities even from their families, with some exceptions, Jaime being one of them. I love how his entire family is in on it.

You know what just dawned on me, it's easy to chalk Jamie's talk with his dad as something his mind is doing but I like to think since the Scarab is alien in origin, from the Reach, it's possible to save Jamie & itself, the Scarab opened up a portal to another dimension to give Jamie what he needed, since it would seem easier to establish a connection if Jamie himself was in a limbo state. I know it's wild/a reach (😏) but I like the thought.
Also stand up ANDROID!! 🔥🔥 & THIS is how this film should be appreciated. It was amazing. It spoke to a whole culture & was still amazing.

Jaime's father death was emotional
I'm so glad blue beatle will be coming back. This movie surprised me so much. Rudy pulling that heartbreaking monolog about Alberto out of nowhere, Jaime's conviction influencing the planet busting WMD to the point that the one time his conviction wavers it pulls him back from the edge and gives him empathy instead, the bleak cyberpunk themes tempered with the bombastic power fantasy of the superhero genre to get the best of both worlds, etc. I'm really excited to see what else they do with this version of the character

@Media Knights in the intro of the movie there’s more than one Scarab of different colour flying in a line so my theory is that there’s more scarabs will crash land on earth making Jaime not the only one who has a Scarab and a suit.

Jaime's mom was played by Elpidia Carillo. Some of you might recognize her from a little movie called Predator. Becky G, who voiced Khaji-Da (Blue Beetle's AI), was also Trini in the 2017 Power Rangers movie.
I also liked the reference to Maria la del Barrio. Even here in the Philippines, that show was a hit. Actually, let me rephrase that. All the shows starring Thalia was a hit.

Thanks for the reaction guys! That was awesome! I haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but I'm definitely buying a copy for my library. Blue Beetle was always one of my favorites. Also, since my Spanish is limited, I appreciate the translations! I think the new Blue Beetle has an overtone of Spider-Man with a little bit of Iron-Man, and the red and blue colors of the hero and villain reminded me of Tron. As for Susan Sarandon, she wasn't acting. She was being herself! 😂

@The Media Knights I know I shouldn’t say this but if I directed this movie I would’ve lifted the camera up a bit to show Jaime’s bottom when the suit deactivated in that scene where he first discovers the suit I also show a internal view of the scareb moving up Jaime’s large intestine to his back in that same scene.
Scale that body horror to 11 I see 😂 Denise and I were actually just talking about how the scarab would technically have to rip his intestines in order to reach his spine and then heal it all while it's making it's way up. Pretty gnarly stuff
