Must See: Armed Veteran Jewelry Store Owner Forces Thief to Leap Through Shattered Window in Omaha

  • Now, in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a laughing matter, but I can't help but laugh at the way the robber immediately threw his hands up and skedaddled through the same shattered glass he had created.
Garrett Peddicord, a veteran, a goldsmith, and jewelry store owner in Omaha, Nebraska, was ready to respond when he heard his window shatter around 11:30 p.m.
He glanced at the security monitors and saw a thief entering the window.
Garrett Peddicord spent about three years deployed in Afghanistan.
But let me do a little Monday morning quarterbacking here.
I don't think I would have come around the corner the way he did. Don't get me wrong, it worked for him, and I think his so-called violence of action is what caused the robber to become startled and take off, but what if the robber decided to stay and fight instead of flee?
Everyone startled response isn't to flee
I would have probably leaned out the door and made my comband with my gun pointed so that if they did decide to stay and fight, I could take some cover or concealment after firing my shots.
How would you have handled this situation?

@@Scoots1994Because sometimes they dont. The term 'cant be quantified' exists for a reason. Some data sets cant be used for a particular stat or analysis despite it being a part of it. Did him having a gun save his life? Would he only have been beat if he didnt have it? Did him pulling the gun scare the criminal enough he wont do it again and potentially kill someone in the future? How many lives could this moment potentially save? So when he says it wont make it to the stat of 'lives a gun has saved'. He is accurate and yes... that stat doesnt have all the data because its quite literally impossible to do.

@@wdmcgaheeii I know. My point was that people see a stat and think it represents "truth" and "fact", when in reality it is a usually flawed snapshot of a subset of the data it suggests it has.
Crime data is INCREDIBLY poorly collated and yet people constantly draw conclusions from it like it's conclusive.
Then add to that the intentional lies in filtering data sets to make the point you want ... like guns being the #1 killer of children ... but only if you redefine "children" to include adults.

The problem is as a legal, innocent, law abiding citizen, if we use our 2A right to defend ourselves our family or our property, our actions will then be scrutinized and cross examined.. our firearm will be taken from us and booked as evidence, and will be inspected and every modification will be questioned. The serial number and rifling will be cataloged in a database, and the firearm will be kept until the government feels like giving it back to us... And while the government decides whether or not to prosecute, the civil lawsuit from the "victim's" family will also play out....
So yeah... Shooting is not plan A.

What anti-gun people don't understand is:
It's not that we WANT to be the hero, it's that our sense of duty, our OBLIGATION to protect life, makes us do things that puts our life at great risk to aid others, and, well, "hero" is how people without a sense of duty brand people like us. It's a character trait, a mindset, philosophical - perhaps theological - way of living. You do it because it's the right thing to do, even if it's not in your best interest.
Carrying a gun helps our odds of surviving. It's a tool to aid us should such an obligation arise. That's it.

You are right Colion. Absolutely right about this. You have to think five times before you take action and all of this in a split second and make a good decision that backs you up. I praise you man you I enjoy the content you are putting out man. Thanks a lot man

I went into a Precious Metals shop a few days back with my brother. We're new to it all so we looked at everything. Being probably half to 2/3 the age of everyone else in there, we suspect they thought we were casing the place. We bought a few silver eagles, read the history pamphlets on display. Point being, they were all armed and the lady had her hand under her hoodie on her concealed the whole time. We've grown up around firearms our entire lives thanks to our Dad, so this wasn't threatening to us, we laughed about it in the car. We weren't doing anything wrong so we knew they had no reason to draw on us.
I'll be purchasing my first sidearm this Summer, and I grew up Skeet Shooting but it's hard to conceal the ol' over-n-under. ;P

Why wasn't this all over the news? Great 2A add! I would have been more cautious, but then I'm not a veteran or police. They tend more to just face the danger.

I agree. That's the first thing I noticed; that he came out bereft of cover. With the cameras, he has a MAJOR advantage. He knows where the perp came in, where he's currently at, plus the layout of the store; so, he should immediately know the best angles for cover. If the perp had a weapon and decided to fire, he is out in the middle, 10 or so feet from practical cover. Well, maybe he knew something we don't, with just a video to surmise.
    Cheers

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
    - Thomas Jefferson, Commonplace Book (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria), 1774-1776
Our nation must return to the values established by our founding fathers, and follow our constitution - it is the law of the land.

The fact, Colion, that some people do get killed/harmed, with their own weapons, is because WE do not want to kill anyone. I think criminals know that and will take advantage of our hesitation and be just a little more aggressive. Had the store owner fired, harmed or killed this robber, he might have been arrested for murder, because (as far as we can see) the robber is not armed. Our judicial system seems to think that criminals can only harm us with actual weapons....guns, knives, etc. and come down hard on victims who fire at/kill criminals with no actual weapons......"But the criminal was unarmed!". Also, store owner's life did not seem to be threatened, as robber raised hands and retreated......he might have been arrested, if he fired.
