Nothing looks better than a good edge on sidewalk grass....unless you're a kid on a bmx bike lol. Decades later and I still remember the fear of catching a tire in the groove...and instant wipeout lol.
So I’m doing my research as I’m about to pull the trigger on a used flex 21. Stumble upon this video, and as I’m watching I say to myself, “man that neighborhood looks just like mine.” Low and behold, it is! Haha I’m like 15 houses up the street. Your lawn is my motivation!
That’s crazy. Well I’m glad I can motivate you In a positive way. Reel mowing is a lot of work, but I find it rewarding as well. I’m selling my John Deere and toro soon to find a newer flex.
Any chance you can make a top dressing/lawn leveling video? There is nothing good out there regarding what type of sand (or mix) to use, when to apply, etc.
That would be awesome! So much conflicting info out there! River sand, builder sand, bagged sand. Straight sand, sand with top soil, sand with compost. I also think everyone has a different goal (putting green lawn or just improving the soil).
I'm assuming you went with the Flex 21 because the floating head and lower HOC with the floating head, but can you compare and contrast it to the JD180? I'm looking at a GM 1000 and a JD220C similar price, but also have a source for an older flex 21.
I went with the flex because of the floating head and 21”, verse my John Deere at 18”. I love them both, but I’m really liking the flex after the first couple of times running it. Seems to me that it’s easier to operate. But I think either Mower is a great choice.
Great video! I've got a Tru Cut 27 and some 40 degree slope in my front yard. How severe a slope would you use this mower on? I'm considering switching b/c my TC 27 is too heavy to move up and down the slope on my zoysia. Is this easier to move around vs a Tru Cut?
No, it would be just as hard or harder to deal with the slope. A greens mower may even weigh more than the tru cut. They just aren’t made for steep slopes.
its a shame Bermuda doesn't "bend" as much when its fully green as it does when its dormant or half dormant. Are you familiar with the locke brand of reel mowers?
Just purchased same, Cut a much smaller bent grass lawn and I find the mower travels faster then I prefer, so I have slowed the rpms, wondering if this harms the motor and does the reel spin at the same rate? or is there another way to slow down the travel speed?
At my own house, I use .80 size, and really any brand. I’m just after a clean cut and not worried about durability. Now for work, I use stihl cf3, .95, and it’s extremely durable.
A pretty good bit. They are considered high maintenance. The engine is the same as any other engine, but the sharpening, adjusting is way more than a regular mower
The Southern Reel Mower thanks for the info! I’m looking into getting a TOROFlex 21. Used...how much do they run? I can’t find any info other then on ebay
The Southern Reel Mower ok cool, do you have a recommendation on what to look at when buying used? I found one, looks to be like they use it, going to view it this week. offerup.co/OAGfjzviG5

Come check it out sometime. I have to start the process of finding a new soon
I’ll pop down this week. Don’t list it or tell anyone haha

Do you have a link for the high HOC kit?
You use that weed eater like a surgeon does a scalpel. Awesome.
Thank you. Means a lot

I sure will! I need to addresss some spots in my lawn so I’ll record it when I do

Yes I am
Which do you like better the Toro or the John Deere and why?
I'm torn between the two but I'm leaning toward the John Deere 220b
Just purchased same, Cut a much smaller bent grass lawn and I find the mower travels faster then I prefer, so I have slowed the rpms, wondering if this harms the motor and does the reel spin at the same rate? or is there another way to slow down the travel speed?
The reel speed is tied to the engine/travel speed. Slowing the rpms doesn’t harm anything.
@@TheSouthernReelMower I need to remove the reel to go for sharpening at a local golf course. Please tell me how.
Awesome
Thank you
Which size/brand string trimmer string do you use sir?

A little lol. But I did use the John Deere for scalping.

I run a 5w-40 synthetic diesel oil in all my machines
@@TheSouthernReelMower thank you
