When I went to look at it we pulled it out checked that it had oil and fresh gas. Thanks for your video. Been looking for a reel mower for sometime but have not found any at the price points you talk about. Would you mind sharing where your shopping or where I should look I’d appreciate it. Keep up the great info.
You're pretty much on the money when it comes to the McLane. Bought a used one about a month ago for what I thought was a good deal until I did more research on them. The mower is practically brand new and I like it but a month in and I'm already ready to upgrade to a Toro or JD. For what I paid for the McLane I could have gotten a great Toro greenmaster.
Great video. I currently have a 25 inch TruCut and 27 inch Maclane greens edition but I've wanting a toro greensmaster for a long time. You mentioned that you found yours at an auction. What auction site and or place? (I too live in Ga)
I think there are reel mowers with strippers. One had a black one that was a tube built in low to the ground on the back. Not sure what model it was. It seems like it was built on to it though. I think it was build onto the back wheel. And the back wheel was very low to the ground. some models that would be easy to do or add on potentially. Might have been a marketed feature too.
What type of grass seed is that lawn? Also, what are your thoughts on Barenbrug Turf Blue HGT...? What do you think is the best, darkest KBG seed to purchase. Living in western N.Y.
Brett's Grasscapades most of the major greensmowers have battery versions out there. I almost NEVER see them offered for sale however. They were pretty rare.
Can you engage the reel and self propel separately on the greens mowers? Much like the am lane with the dual clutch? Have you looked into Mclane’s greens mower?
Any update on your Jacobsen? I just picked up a 2015 522a for pretty cheap (actually I haven’t even picked it up yet). If you still have yours, any plans for an update video?
Still have it, still dont like it haha. I have the model with the magnetic bedknife and the other day it fell off. I really nust like the ergonomics of the Toro best honestly.
I looked and looked for a while and just couldn’t find a Toro in my price range. I really wanted one based off of your video. That sucks to hear about your bedknife. I’d be interested in a video if you plan to fix it. This will be my first reel. I’ve read through the manual twice already but personally do better watching guys like you explain.
One thing I feel is worth mentioning that a lot of people don't talk about when discussing greens mowers is how hard they are to maneuver in yards where there are lots of obstacles. These machines are tanks and do not back up easily. They are harder to turn around and navigating around flower beds, trees, electrical boxes, water meters... Basically typical things you might find in ones lawn can be hard to get around. These machines were built to be used on open greens with no obstacles whatsoever and no reason to backup.
Yes they are a bit harder to maneuver but they are not that much harder. I will admit I don't have a ton of obstacles to get around or hills so I'm not sure how well they would perform in that aspect. Thanks for watching and for your input.
I bought a tru cut about 2 years ago when I started mowing my own yard. I don’t have anything to compare it to, but I’m a 56 year old female and I don’t think it’s that hard to push. I have hills and it can be a bit tricky.
Very informative video. I love gardening as much as anyone but I have other things I would throw money at. I bought my son a McClane for $60 ten years ago when he bought his house. A few months ago, he took it into a shop for servicing. $76 later, the blades were sharpen, the choke adjusted and oil changed. He has a St. Augustine front and back lawns. Not bad for $136 total.
If you mow often enough like 2 times a week you will not have an issue leaving clippings. If you wait too long between mows and the clippings are too long you will want to bag.
It depends on condition and price. If they are the same price and generally the same condition it comes down to personal preference. I think either mower would be a great option of in good shape.
Noob here. Where can i buy a used Toro 1600 greenmaster ?? Guess my google fu skills are not all that! Google sends me to home depot & Loews.. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. 🙏🏻

I've picked them up all over. Craigslist, Facebook marketplace auctions and golf course equipment dealers. They are out there you gotta look hard! Don't settle for something you don't want.
@@Brettsgrasscapades are you talking about a golf course equipment dealer online? if so would you copy a link here. I live away from big cities and have had a hard time finding ANY used reel mowers. I would love to pick one up. Thanks for any tips
Finding a new one from a dealer will run you like 12-15k so used is what you will want. Look up the weeks auction company out of south Georgia they have an auction coming up soon I think and will have some good stuff.
Brett's Grasscapades haha...that explains why it’s so dark green, tight and low cut! We ain’t got any Bermuda like that in the South...thought you were a Special Agent in Tifton with some top secret propagation
Hi Brett, You mention that the greensmaster can have its outer transport axles removed. How do you remove them? And do they have to be in there for the unit to mow?
Yes they are removable and you can mow with them off. You have to put a wrench on the inside and outside and they break free. Hard to explain maybe I'll make a video on it haha.
Where are you getting the reels and bed knives sharpened ? Local golf Course or local shop ? I’m looking at a reelmaster 6500 but it’s way overkill for my lawn size.
Hi brett, I’m new to reel mower. Just wondering if you have knowledge about John Deere 220B? I found one on Craigslist Chicago for $550 I don’t know if it’s a good deal. Thanks for making this video
Just looked at the ad and it looks pretty good overall. That price isn't bad if it is in as good of shape as they say. I would check to make sure it will cut paper all the way across and look at the reel to make sure it's in decent shape. Other than that it looks like a good buy. Let me know if you get it! I love my John deere!
Awesome video Brett! Do you have some names of local mechanics that would work on a Jake? I know they're tough but seems like you found some people that know how to work on them. Thanks!
Hi Brett, I’m trying to find a McLane 25 or a toro like you said here in Canada. I have found a used toro green master flex 21. Is the flex a good or bad idea?
The flex is a great mower but usually comes with a 11 or 14 blade reel designed for mowing under .5" and the mower will not go higher than that unless you modify it.
@@ko6128 yes a tru cut will work. As will a McLane or cal trimmer. You will just not get the same cut quality or stripes. You personally may not be looking for that but many people are.
Brett's Grasscapades got it, thanks. I have St Augustine grass in hot So California, if I can figure out how to keep it green while short would love to get a reel someday.
M M thanks for the info. Too bad can’t see photo of your lawn. I’m still trying to figure out what Bermuda looks like. I like the short look but when I lower blade on my Honda rotary it butchers the St Aug lawn.
There are many different places to find them. I've picked them up off of craigslist, Facebook marketplace, local golf courses and turf equipment dealerships. You will want to start making friends with the right people and they will keep an eye out for you. Thanks for watching!
I checked the auction site you mentioned. Their prices are much higher than described on your video, do you have an inside contact? I’m very interested in getting the toro you highlighted in your video.
Nope no special contact the prices I stated were during active auctions. The ones you see are for equipment they have for sale not for auction. Check to see when the next auction is and you can get a great deal!
Jacobsen has the same honda as the deere it's not Jacobsen fault, and the mechanic that had it before broke the adjuster by using a reel or knife that was to worn and it was out of adjustment so he kept torqueing it down vs changing the reel
@@maltedbarley1 it was my least favorite out of the 3 I had mostly because it would only mow up to .5" not a bad mower over all I just wasnt a huge fan of the controls and hated the magnet bedknife!
No certainly not, I do think its a good solid mower. My biggest issue really was I kind of came up using the toro mowers and have really gotten used to and like the controls of those mowers. I think the jake is a big step up from a tru cut or Mclane and most people will be very happy with them.
The blades do need to be sharpened. You can do a process called backlapping yourself or have a professional sharpen them for about $100 which will last at least a full season for a normal homeowner.
The budget is only so big! I would love to get my hands on one but it's not in cards but if they wanted to send me a demo unit I'd gladly play with it!

@@Brettsgrasscapades
Thank for the info. Last question do they put it on a pallet and tell you the weight and dimensions?
I believe they will prep it for shipping and tell you all that info. Its been a couple years since I bought one from them.
Where do you usually pick up these mowers? All I ever see in classified ads are Cal trimmer and McLane.
@@gregbullion4125 look up "weeks turf equipment auction" they have several each year and you can arrange shipping to anywhere.
I just picked up a John Deere 180SL payed 1600 but it was completely refurbished
Is it better to get any of these ones or a robot one?
Brett I live in Atlanta Ga I can’t find anyone that sells the Toro green master 1600. You know of any dealers
Finding a new one from a dealer will run you like 12-15k so used is what you will want. Look up the weeks auction company out of south Georgia they have an auction coming up soon I think and will have some good stuff.
Brett's Grasscapades oh wow I wasn’t aware of that.. ok I will research the auction
How did you find a auction place that has reels? I live in Pendergrass Ga.
Brett...what variety of Bermuda is that in your yard?
Not Bermuda at all! Its Kentucky bluegrass. Thanks for watching!
Brett's Grasscapades haha...that explains why it’s so dark green, tight and low cut! We ain’t got any Bermuda like that in the South...thought you were a Special Agent in Tifton with some top secret propagation
@@dansneeringer5637 hahaha Bermuda is a weed out here in Utah!
And I was discouraged from using a reel mower here in Philly Metro area with Bluegrass/Zoysia.. Thank you
Sounds like the John Deere and the Toro are the best. Any thoughts on the Swardman one?
Hi Brett, You mention that the greensmaster can have its outer transport axles removed. How do you remove them? And do they have to be in there for the unit to mow?
Yes they are removable and you can mow with them off. You have to put a wrench on the inside and outside and they break free. Hard to explain maybe I'll make a video on it haha.
Great mowers love it ❤️❤️ super nice 👍👍👍
One last silly question. Do you prefer the 1000/1600 toro?
Where are you getting the reels and bed knives sharpened ? Local golf
Course or local shop ?
I’m looking at a reelmaster 6500 but it’s way overkill for my lawn size.
I get mine serviced at the local toro golf dealership.
Where do we find used mowers that cheap?
Hi brett, I’m new to reel mower. Just wondering if you have knowledge about John Deere 220B? I found one on Craigslist Chicago for $550 I don’t know if it’s a good deal. Thanks for making this video
Just looked at the ad and it looks pretty good overall. That price isn't bad if it is in as good of shape as they say. I would check to make sure it will cut paper all the way across and look at the reel to make sure it's in decent shape. Other than that it looks like a good buy. Let me know if you get it! I love my John deere!
thanks brett for your quick advice. I’ll let you know if I’ll get it. it’s 3 hrs drive from my house. thank you again
Mowed with a reel mower as a kid in the 60's.
jacobsens are Ransomes in UK. Brilliant traditional historic English brand. I don't know what Jacobsens has done to them.
What’s the auction you said you got one of the mowers at? Do you know of any online websites that sell used reel mowers?
Look up "weeks turf auction". I don't know of any places selling online right now.
Awesome video Brett! Do you have some names of local mechanics that would work on a Jake? I know they're tough but seems like you found some people that know how to work on them. Thanks!
Shoot me an email. Brettgoodyear123@gmail.com
Did u have to buy all of those to find the right one?
Hi Brett, I’m trying to find a McLane 25 or a toro like you said here in Canada. I have found a used toro green master flex 21. Is the flex a good or bad idea?
The flex is a great mower but usually comes with a 11 or 14 blade reel designed for mowing under .5" and the mower will not go higher than that unless you modify it.
@@Brettsgrasscapades Ok thanks, i went with the 1600 working great so far. thanks again.
For the money mclanes California trimmer and tru cut r the 3 I deal with everyday all cut low and last years if u take care of them and ur yard
And u didn’t no this but mclanes reels do come in 2 blade and bedknifes 7-10 blade and reg bedknife and the lower cutting greens bedknife
Do you have any experience with the swardman?
🙄🙄🙄
I think I would like the toro 1600
I think you would like one as well! Great mower!
Explain WHY one would want to upgrade from the Tru-Cut please
Because they want a better cut quality and want to stripe.
Brett's Grasscapades Ok, but for your typical homeowner, that doesn’t need PGA putting greens quality grass, won’t the Tru-Cut be acceptable?
@@ko6128 yes a tru cut will work. As will a McLane or cal trimmer. You will just not get the same cut quality or stripes. You personally may not be looking for that but many people are.
Brett's Grasscapades got it, thanks. I have St Augustine grass in hot So California, if I can figure out how to keep it green while short would love to get a reel someday.
M M thanks for the info. Too bad can’t see photo of your lawn. I’m still trying to figure out what Bermuda looks like. I like the short look but when I lower blade on my Honda rotary it butchers the St Aug lawn.
Where can you find Toro’a or JD Used Greens Keeper Mowers?
There are many different places to find them. I've picked them up off of craigslist, Facebook marketplace, local golf courses and turf equipment dealerships. You will want to start making friends with the right people and they will keep an eye out for you. Thanks for watching!
Can reelrollers sponser a roller for the Mclane? I would like to see your review?
Haha maybe.
@@Brettsgrasscapades
The reel roller works great on the Mclane I had on on my last mower
@@Brettsgrasscapades Brett do you want to sell me that Mclane? I am local. Good video
@@k20turb0 send me an email man.
Brett, were local make sure you come visit us at Reel Rollers
How much would you pay for a 2016 toro gm1000 with 400hours on it. Looks like it’s in great shape. Also, how you feel about the Subaru engine?
Great engine and probably worth $1000-1500 depending on its shape.
Saw this video last year. Found a 522 for a decent price. Can you offer any more input on the Jacobson now that you’ve had it longer?
Thank you
Paul
What would you like to know. I recently sold it actually.
Brett's Grasscapades well did you hate it and dump it or because you had three it was the least liked
@@maltedbarley1 it was my least favorite out of the 3 I had mostly because it would only mow up to .5" not a bad mower over all I just wasnt a huge fan of the controls and hated the magnet bedknife!
Brett's Grasscapades thank you for the prompt reply. If it was your only one would you have been miserable?
No certainly not, I do think its a good solid mower. My biggest issue really was I kind of came up using the toro mowers and have really gotten used to and like the controls of those mowers. I think the jake is a big step up from a tru cut or Mclane and most people will be very happy with them.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir!
Do the blades need sharpening? If so, is this difficult and/or expensive?
The blades do need to be sharpened. You can do a process called backlapping yourself or have a professional sharpen them for about $100 which will last at least a full season for a normal homeowner.
You said you bought that John deer from the week’s auction. I call and they said it’s $400 to ship to Utah. How did you get the shipping so cheap?
I used a freight company, I don't remember which one, but it was $300ish to ship it on top of what I paid for it.
What sort of grass is that? It looks awsome
Thank you sir! It's a cool season blend of mostly kbg and PRG with some fescue in there too!
So you CAN cut cool season grasses with reel mowers successfully? Just like the golf courses in my Philly Metro area!!!
amigo como hago para que me consigas una de esas...?
Where are you buying your reel mower from with those prices I am in Georgia looking
Weeks Auctions. They have one on right now.
Lol, is this why they were joking at the meetup that you were the one buying them all up off KSL? Makes more sense now 😆
Maaaaaaaaybeeee.
Bretts Grasscapades, what are your thoughts on Allett or Swordman?
Never tried either of them so I don't really have an opinion on them unfortunately. I'd love to though.
Cali Trimmer too.....?
Where did you get your Toro greens master 1600 from?
I bought it second hand from a toro dealer.
You mention in this video that you picked up the John Deere at an auction for cheap. Can you reply with what auction website?
I picked them up from the weeks equipment auction out of moultrie Georgia. They do auctions pretty often throughout the year.
Have you tried a Swardman?
Sadly not. I'd love to but can't justify the price of a new one and nobody around me seems to be selling one.
Brett what's the difference between 180b 220a John deere
About 40. Haha kidding. But the main difference is the 180 is an 18" cut and the 220 is a 22"
$600 for the 220a to much
Depends on the condition. $600 isn't a terrible price but things add up quickly if you need to make repairs.
a reel video without an Allett?
The budget is only so big! I would love to get my hands on one but it's not in cards but if they wanted to send me a demo unit I'd gladly play with it!
Where's your Allett?
