It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star. :Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.”
I’ll use your word… Shellshocked! I’ve seen this video thousands of times and I’m still in shock every time I watch it. It’s just so good and so perfect. I didn’t discover Freddie Mercury and Queen until I saw the movie Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018 and I have been on the nonstop Queen train ever since. This performance and their full Wembley 86 concert are my favorite performances. If you haven’t already watched Wembley 86 in its entirety, you absolutely should. It will leave you shocked as well. Thank you for the great reaction!

Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing Called Love but sings like Elvis. He wrote this in 10 minutes in a bathtub in Munich. Notice how Brian uses 3 different guitars during this song. He is a perfectionist.

I appreciate the fact that they didn't use lighting effects and lasers since they can trigger my epilepsy and migraines. I can enjoy this over and over again. Freddie definitely didn't need the special effects.
Once you 'Get' Queen...They become part of your soul and mental wallpaper. Although now in this 21st century there is so much mystique surrounding Queen, and particularly Freddie's legendary status...We who were privileged to see Queen perform live, knew instinctively that we were witnessing inimitable greatness. I was so very fortunate to attend several of their concerts in different parts of the world in the mid 80's...This band were the perfect storm, and Freddie was the God with pockets full of fairy dust, who ensured each and every ticket holder experienced the absolute time of their lives. Dear Freddie showed us inside his heart...and we will love him forever for it.❤

I wasn't there, but I saw it on MTV in the US live. This was a concert for African famine relief and they had this show at Wembley Stadium in London and in Philidelphia in the US. Lots of acts. It was a shoot off from the Band Aid recording of Do They Know It's Christmas in 1984. That is why it was called Live Aid.
Love your genuine reaction, stop apologising ! Fun fact :If you listen during "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" you can hear the unseen 5th member of Queen pounding the piano keys. Spike Edney is still with Brian and Roger today when they tour with Adam Lambert. I'm 75, wasn't at this show but saw it on TV. I did see them at their only concert ever in NZ in 1985. Also thank you for acknowledging the other band members....all equally as important to the group.
You can hear Spike on Hammer to Fall also, he’s banging away as Freddie put his hand on the cameraman’s shoulder and dances with him. The cableman said Freddie grabbed the guys package, then his shoulder. At the end of the song, you can see Freddie shaking hands with the cableman after hugging the cameraman, then he takes a sip of honey tea and Ratty puts the guitar on him.
Spike is visible stage left on piano in a couple of shots during Crazy Little Thing Called Love and is also visible stood at the back of the stage playing rhythm guitar during Hammer To Fall.
This was one of the BEST reactions I’ve seen done for Live Aid, really nicely done… And I was so IMPRESSED with the quality of the video! Queen is Freddie Mercury piano, vocals, Brian May guitar, piano, and vocals and sometimes harp and ukulele, John Deacon bass, and sometimes times piano and double bass, and Roger Taylor drums and vocals. Note that it is John and Roger that allow Queen to keep so well to the alloted time. Also, Roger helps Freddie out with vocals, especially in 'Champions'. It was said that the band couldn't actually hear each other very well and worked on rehearsal, gestures, and muscle memory to get through! Epic!
Loved your appreciative reaction and observations. If you haven't already done so, please check out what's probably my favourite Queen song/ performance - White Queen, Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975. It's intense and beautiful in a dreamy, Arthurian/ medieval sort of way. Look out for the electrifying duet between Freddie on piano and Brian on guitar, it can take you off to another dimension!
I was there that day in 1985 as a 15yr old pop music lover... I left that day as a convert to rock music, thanks mainly to Freddie & Co... You need to remember that this was NOT a Queen concert or even a Queen audience, in fact they were a last minute addition to the line up. That said for 22 minutes that afternoon Freddie had close to 73,000 people in Wembley and almost 1.9 billion watching on TV globally eating out of the palm of his hand. David Bowie followed Queen that day and was in the wings when they came off stage and apparently said to Freddie something along the lines of "thanks you b'stard, how the f*** am I supposed to follow that?"😂😂 I was lucky enough to see them again the following year on their "Magic" tour, Status Quo opened for them (BONUS) and Queen certainly didn't disappoint. I'm now a 55yr old woman who's been to 300ish live rock concerts over the years, everyone from Guns n Roses to ACDC to Uriah Heep, Meatloaf, Status Quo, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi (48 times 😂), The Hollywood Vampires (Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry) to H.I.M and the 69 Eyes.. but that 22 minutes right there is still by far the best 22 minutes of live greatness EVER! And one show that has never left my memory! God bless you Freddie and Thank you for the music.. Rest In Paradise you legend 👑 As an aside.... In sn interview, when asked what eas his favourite instrument to play... In typical Freddie style, he replied "the audience darling".
You can see the warning light set up over Freddie’s shoulder at 2:26. Green, yellow and red. In the middle of the sound monitors. And you can see his and John’s personal roadie and the band’s head tech, Peter “Ratty” Hince crouched by the piano doing a final adjustment to Freddie’s mic before passing it to him. The two guys you mentioned sitting in the rafters were a stationary BBC cameraman and a friend. The cameraman’s son commented on a much earlier reaction maybe 4 or five years ago.
Hmmmmmm nope no such lighting system was used ,it was a lot simpler ,yip a clock . I should know I'm 67 now but as a 27 year old I was in that tent in the middle of the stadium as guess what yip the lighting engineer
@where did you hear that? That’s not the consensus of the techs, bands, organizers and historians. In fact, Pete Townsend stepped on the light and broke it when it began flashing when the Who should have winded up their set. If the lights were intended for announcers, why would they be flashing during a performance? Announcers didn’t need lights to keep track of time - they had the luxury of the stage manager to give them cues. Organizers realized the acts, many of whom hadn’t rehearsed, would need the ever-present visual cue of the lights as they couldn’t be distracted by tracking a stranger’s movements - without earpieces they could barely hear each play, relying only on the monitors which just basically blasted back a wall of noise so they had to constantly rely on visual cues from each other. Queen provided their own wall clocks because there weren’t any provided.
@@4390hoover @ nope, Queen provided their own wall clocks. Pete Townsend deliberately stepped on the red light you claim didn’t exist and broke it when it began flashing when the Who should’ve been winding up and then played five more minutes. Furthermore we can clearly see the red light come on just as Freddy ended Queen’s set. Even my 70 yo eyes can see it. This is documented fact. But ok, Mr. lighting engineer, do go on… which production company did you work for?
@lhamoat55 I claimed it didn't exist for the purpose you said it did the lighting engineers had no control over those lights it was the production crew ,the red light at the end of the set was for said crew to get ready for the announcer to enter the stage and for crew and to start prep for the next band.
Check out Now I’m Here, Under Pressure and Love of My Life live at Wembley. Also check out their July 12th performance of Tie Your Mother Down live at Wembley and watch the audience. Epic!
The GOAT, the best frontman of any band, ever. Freddie's answer when asked what instrument he played was "The crowd darling". PS he had a throat problem on the day and was advised not to appear - then you get this performance. Brian's guitar was home made.
The band totally nailed this set and Freddie seemed to be enjoying the crowd and camera crew. While Freddie likes to use the whole stage to address the crowd, the camera crew was crowding in so Freddie has fun with finding ways to push them out of his way. There was no dress rehearsal and no sound check at this show and the band was having trouble hearing each other as was true with all the acts but Queen was used to playing arenas and they managed to work around those issues. When tickets were sold for this concert, Queen was not one of the confirmed bands so this was not necessarily a Queen crowd. With that said, this is a hometown crowd for Queen.
There was a Freddie Mercury Tribute concert in the 90's. Various artists singing in front of the surviving members of Queen. George Michaels sang Somebody to Love. It is a masterclass in respect and adoration of Freddie.
I heard that Freddie ad libbed the call and response (the Day-ohs etc.) with the audience because Brian had to fix a broken string. He kept it up just long enough for him to be ready to play the next song.
Back in the 70's and 80's I and my friends went to many concerts. Spent most of our Saturday night's watching bands. I was the lone Queen fan in my group, bought all the albums of the time. My best friend, who was a big Who/Stones fan, who called Queen pretentious arses... finally admitted to me in the late 80's that this performance was the best thing he ever saw. It is the seminal live music performance anywhere, at anytime by anyone. It is with great shame that I have to admit I never went to a Queen concert. It is a regret I will take to my grave!
Unfortunately Roger is hardly seen in the video! I don't think he gets nearly enough credit. Probably because Freddie's performance is just so mesmerising. His vocal support of Freddie especially as the set progresses is amazing. You can hear Roger's voice getting louder and louder as he realises Freddie's voice is beginning to break. During We Are the Champions, Roger (who is very shortsighted) said he looked up and the crowd were like a field of wheat blowing in the wind!
Couldn't get tickets but watched it live on TV. Been a Queen fan since 1975 when I first heard Boh Rap. Went to see them twice in 79 and 81, unforgetable. And thanks for your review, I'm glad it popped up in my feed.
Great reaction Freddie would have loved it! I often think I hope he's watching from above and can see he is still getting new fans! I think there must have been a massive amount of Queen fans at the concert because they all knew what to do when Freddie started with his Eyoos cant think of how to describe it he does that with that song. He does bring tears to your eyes his voice is surreal! Still does to me when I hear him sing still! The crowd also joined in with him on certain songs
I actually attended Queen at Knebworth ParkUK in 1986 which was Freddie’s very last live performance with his band, the crowd at Knebworth was estimated to be around 120,000 to 140,000 people, also the backup bands were Status Quo and Big Country, a phenomenal live performance by all !
72,000 people in attendance and 1.9 Billion people watching from around the world. Freddie performed against doctors orders with a throat infection. Live Aid made 140 million dollars for famine in Africa. When the boys left the stage a prince from Dubai donated $1 million dollars.
Liked & subscribed, Queen the best band ever! If you go down the Queen rabbit hole you won’t regret it, their music gets into your very soul! If you do more Queen your subscriber base will explode but just remember the golden rule, never ever pause during a Brian May solo, if you do these same Queenies will come down on you hard! 🤣 Grear reaction, greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
i was 14, holding tape recorder close to tv trying to catch some songs ... it is hard to explane... we had no net, no phones at any time.. and we lived trough music... and to have 16 hours of most of our idols singing best of 20 min.. almost half of the globe in front of tv.... 1.9 bilion people watching... and trust me... when he sang last "champions of the world" we all felt like champions. try Green day Bohemian rapsody... 2017. greetings from Croatia
It was said by bands 😢 "THEY'RE STEALING THE SHOW" Freddie was very sick that day, but he did 34:26 n't want to disappoint his fans. They put on a hell of a show. I was 16 years old and watched it on TV here in the USA! RIP FREDDIE MERCURY 1946-1991 DIED 11/24/1991 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🙏 YOU ARE LOVED AND MISSED
Plz go down the Queen rabbit hole ffs, I've been a Queen fan since 1974 and I am nearly 70 years old and they have kept me young with their brilliance and the way that they lift you up.
I love your reaction! Freddie had a bad sore throat that day and his doctors advised him not to perform. Despite that, he gave the best performance ever. David Bowie came on stage after Queen and said, "What the hell am I supposed to do on stage now?" And Elton John went up to Queen and shouted, "You bastards stole the show!" But all the artists who performed at Live Aid had to admit that they had just seen the best band ever!
As a life long Queenie, I would have loved to have been there but I had to watch from the sofa at home as I was heavily pregnant. I remember the newspapers gave out the schedule of who was up at what time, so I had got the dog out for a walk before, so I could be glued to the telly after the 6pm mark onward. I still remember crying like a baby for a good hour after they'd been on. Incredible performance but they always gave 100%.
There were 72,000 at Wembley and 89,484 people at the Philadelphia concert shown simultaneously worldwide tv coverage 1.2 BILLION people. They had to go straight into a new song because they had only about 20 mins. They practiced in front of a large clock to get it right.Over 70 artists and bands performed at the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium in London in 1985. The concert was part of a multi-act event that also took place at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia
You should react to any of queens regular concerts. Crowd control at its best!!! There's no one and never will be anyone to be anwhere near his talent!!!!
I was listening to Queen from the age of ten. Listen to Love of my life in rio a then Wembley and then Green Day Crowd Singing Bohemian Rhapsody [Live in Hyde Park 2017] after Freddie
When these people bought the tickets for live aid, Queen was not part of the the live aid lineup. They were added on after the tickets were sold great reaction. I remember watching this live on TV from the United States.❤️✌️🌼
Queen was not added to the lineup until long after Wimbley was sold out, so it definitely was not a crowd of Queen fans. Other performers included Sting, Dire Straits, David Bowie, and Elton John. Queen absolutely smoked them.
Something that is never discussed because so much time has passed but Queen was just one act in the middle of the concert. After Queen was Bowie, then The Who, then Elton and then a huge mix of all the stars including Paul McCartney and Freddie etc. At the same time after a band played in London the show would switch to Philadelphia and all the great American groups performed like Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Duran Duran Mick Jagger and Tina Turner to name a few.. To me, at the moment, Queen's set stood out but so did U2, Paul Young and The Who. My buddy was there in Wembley and still talks about it today 40 years later, the wanker!
I'd love to know where you got the info about the countdown lights , believe me no such thing existed , I should know I'm 67 now but as a 27 year old I was in that tent in the middle of the stadium ,doing guess what ,yip I was the lighting engineer ,best concert I've ever worked at and I've done hundreds , really felt sorry for David Bowie who had to follow them.
What made this performance so memorable was the fact that Queen had these iconic songs. Songs that can be heard on tv as an ad, in a film or at a sports stadium. Flash cleaner use the Queen song from Flash Gordon. Another one Bites the Dust along with We will Rock You and We are the Champions still used today around the world. I felt sorry for David Bowie who had to come on stage after them. Big named performers were at this event but it was Queen who stole the show
Actually LiveAid was first of a kind concert televised to 1.9 billion people worldwide, which was 40 percent of the world population, LiveAid the project of two artists, Bob Geldof from Ireland and Midge Ure from Scotland, the charity concerts were to raise awareness and funds for a terrible famine in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Africa, LiveAid twinned with the same day concert in Philadelphia USA 🇺🇸, around 70 artists participated at both concerts,Crowd at Wembley Stadium Was 72,000 and at Philadelphia around 90,000 people, each artist had around 20 minutes to perform, Queen came on stage and with their 20 minutes slot and there flamboyant performance were the best on the day, Freddie played to the home crowd and had them in the palm of his hand, Queens performance is considered to be the best performance by a band,Freddie the best frontman of a band,This was a special time as I actually attended LiveAid and have seen Queen live many times, it’s estimated that Queen have performed around 700 live concerts worldwide and were one of the first bands to conquer South America, all the bands members have written hit songs, and they were phenomenal musicians, Brian May the lead guitarist hand made his famous red guitar out of an old wooden fireplace and customised it over the years,All the band members went to University and received degrees, Brian May a PHD in astrophysics and is Sir Brian, Freddie had a degree in art and design he also created Queens Logo, drummer Roger Taylor had a bachelor’s degree in biology, and John Deacon had a degree in Electronics,Queen recently sold their catalog of songs to SONY for 1.2 billion dollars, great reaction thanks 🙏😂
I was there, 15 years old. In Australia now. Had back stage passes and have 1 photo with Brian, 2 with Freddie. He was kind and super fun. He had a sore throat and drank honey and lemon all night. Happy to send some pics.
Freddy's aids was showing signs, but you wouldn't have known. They practiced this down to the second. I was to the right of the blue banner you can see. Freddy owned this stage, all 4 off them did.I'm glad he ignored Dr's orders ,because this was when I realised just how good they were.👌💕 Sir Brian and his father built that guitar
I'll add extra, that my cousin Johnny, a navy veteran, died young to off aids. It was a brutal death. My cousin used drugs, but in those days it was a death sentence. Freddy can never be topped ,I don't think. It was this performance that opened my eyes, and I understand why John Deacon finished after Freddys tribute concert. Freddy was the glue that kept him going.😢❤
The interesting part is looking at stage gantry’s and seeing the people watching him ……Most of these are really famous people from other bands absolutely in awe of Freddie ….
That's how you hold 72,000 people in the palm of your hand. What an artist!!!

That said for 22 minutes that afternoon Freddie had close to 73,000 people in Wembley and almost 1.9 billion watching on TV globally eating out of the palm of his hand.
David Bowie followed Queen that day and was in the wings when they came off stage and apparently said to Freddie something along the lines of "thanks you b'stard, how the f*** am I supposed to follow that?"😂😂
I was lucky enough to see them again the following year on their "Magic" tour, Status Quo opened for them (BONUS) and Queen certainly didn't disappoint.
Rest In Paradise you legend 👑
As an aside.... In sn interview, when asked what eas his favourite instrument to play... In typical Freddie style, he replied "the audience darling".
Freddie could strut like no other! It was a magical performance by Queen that day!
Fantastic reaction!
Love you Freddie always! ❤❤❤
I get goosebumps every time I've watched this video.. he as AMAZING.. he will be missed forever. RIP Freddie
The lights by the monitors were for whoever was introducing the bands to let them know if the next act was ready to go, continuity was the key
Oh, that's not crowd control. That's reciprocal love!
Ir was a last min spot for Queen. They was only on this live aid tho
Later that evening Freddie and Brian came back to do an encore, Is This The World We Created. Check that out.
Considered one of the greatest live performances of all time!
Since i discovered U Tube and reactors, i had not heard of Queen. I'm now 74 and i listen to this very concert every day.
David Bowie was due to perform next, he was heard backstage saying "Bastards how the hell am I supposed to follow that".
Couldn't get tickets but watched it live on TV. Been a Queen fan since 1975 when I first heard Boh Rap. Went to see them twice in 79 and 81, unforgetable. And thanks for your review, I'm glad it popped up in my feed.
1. Everyone in the audience was a fan of Queen
2. UK crowds are built different 🤘🏽🧡
I saw Them live when I was 14 early 1981. My mind blown immediately! March 20th. My life has changed from that day on
You should watch the Green day crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody, its incredible.
Watched it live on TV. Been a huge fan ever since.
This was being broadcast in Philadelphia as well and that audience was also reacting the same way.
He did that at his concerts. Freddy was brilliant a master performer. This was his greatest performance
Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing Called Love whilst in the bath! It was an instant hit in 1979! Ready Freddie!
The Word you are looking for, regarding this performance .... PHENOMENAL❗️😉👍
Halito 👋🏽 Everytime I see this I am transported back to being a 12yo kid standing frozen in front of the television watching this. Pure magic 🔥🤘🏽🎵🧡
Did you know that Brian May is an Astrophysicist?
He's also a knight!
If you want more call and response, listen to the 6 minute version of Under Pressure at Wembley. 2 minutes of it. It’s amazing
Many think this was an Elvis song where in fact it’s queen as a tribute to him
I was listening to Queen from the age of ten.
I was right on front of that tent 😂 amazing day
Really enjoy watching that man😊
What made this performance so memorable was the fact that Queen had these iconic songs.
❤❤❤Queennn👍
Freddy's aids was showing signs, but you wouldn't have known. They practiced this down to the second. I was to the right of the blue banner you can see. Freddy owned this stage, all 4 off them did.I'm glad he ignored Dr's orders ,because this was when I realised just how good they were.👌💕
Sir Brian and his father built that guitar
I'll add extra, that my cousin Johnny, a navy veteran, died young to off aids. It was a brutal death. My cousin used drugs, but in those days it was a death sentence. Freddy can never be topped ,I don't think. It was this performance that opened my eyes, and I understand why John Deacon finished after Freddys tribute concert. Freddy was the glue that kept him going.😢❤
I saw them a year later in 86 at Wembley, try Under Pressure from that gig!
I've always considered "control" as a misnomer. Freddie engaged the crowd and they engaged him. It was mutually beneficial.
How to get a US number one hit, write and perform a song in the style of Elvis. Job done. Great track
I live in Canada so I watched it live on tv
We were there and Freddy always rocked best times
It’s a Freddie song. Queen doesn’t do covers. Plz don’t interrupt the GOAT
The interesting part is looking at stage gantry’s and seeing the people watching him ……Most of these are really famous people from other bands absolutely in awe of Freddie ….
You should definitely check out the whole Wembley 1986 Concert
There (after Radio Gaga) he was conducting the biggest choire in the world.
Don't mind how many times you stop the video , but put your phone away, Lol. Love your reactions!
Check out ‘ somebody to love live in Montreal
It was not cut off….on some RUclipsrs channels it’s cut off…I don’t know why
