11/4/2023 NASA ST4 pole position qualifier running in first place with 2 laps to go.
2-3 seconds of heavy gasoline smell followed by an explosion from a leaking fuel tank ignited by the exhaust on a rev match downshift.
Stopped the car and exited as fast as possible, checked for race traffic then ran and jumped over the barriers and waited for New Jersey Motorsports Park EMS.
Emergency personnel did a fantastic job taking a look at my burns and extinguishing the fire, ultimately saving the chassis.
This is EXACTLY why people should always wear fireproofs, even on track days. Glad you got out safe, looked a bit spicy
Made that a habit for myself last year when on the track in the mustang and not the race car. As I was in staging to pull out the Marshall saw me and walked up and said "thank you for wearing a suit, we appreciate you doing that". Since then I haven't gone without it. It's also more comforting blasting into T17 at sebring staring at that tire wall
You meant to say ESPECIALLY on track days. Nimwit.
And practice getting out of the car quickly
I wear fireproofs driving to work and back.
@@alexandersheppard1997 it's part of owning a BMW, i do the same
This incident confirms my decision to install an auto actuated fire suppression system with secondary tank, always close my helmet visor and wear fire retardant underwear. Glad you're okay.
Yea? Mark Petronis would like to have a word with you. @georgexander7170
@georgexander7170 Not if you’re unconscious from a crash which happened at this track a few years ago
'bro'@georgexander7170 this logic gets people killed.
@georgexander7170IF YOU SAY SO GEORGE. It’s not like we didn’t just watch a video where it took the guy 10+ seconds to get out of the car…
Tell me you've never been on fire without telling me you've never been on fire. Car caught fire and he got out at 12 seconds later. He had to come to a full stop, then undo belt and anything else connected. He was on fire for over 10 seconds. He got out as fast as possible. Imagine if he hit a wall or another car, maybe his door doesnt open. Not worth the risk. @georgexander7170
I also hate it when I mean to move to 5th but shift it into Fire instead
Happens way too often…
rookie mistake, they're clearly marked
That was insane. Glad you're ok. I'm going to be checking all my fuel lines during the off season.
had a feeling that's what it was, is it against the rules to have them under the car like original form btw?
my guess is it gets hot under there maybe?
@@Eduardo_Espinoza probably didnt change out the lines or knicked them (rat problem maybe?) when he removed the tank during his build
I love how all your fellow drivers are checking in on you.
While the video is terrifying, thank you for posting it. Gives me a better understanding just how quickly something like this can happen. Glad you made it out ok!
Mia: “hey there’s something wrong with your ride!”
The ride in question:
(Which there really was something wrong with)
Fuel is under emencly high pressure. Something like 300psi as it's pumped to the injectors and when a fuel line ruptures a vapour cloud will fill a car in seconds. It's not a problem in normal cars as no fuel lines are in the cabin. But race cars often have the fuel cell where the back seat used to be. Halon gas extinguishers are essential. For your car carry an extinguisher in the cabin not the boot as you might not have time to get to the boot.
Fuel pump usually runs at around 40 to 120 psi on port injected cars, and 500 to 2000 on direct injected cars, but the lift pump will still run at 40 to 120
My buddy crashed his camaro and bursted into flames and perished. This gives me somewhat of a POV of what he must’ve gone thru.. RIP but I’m glad you’re ok!
Sorry about your friend.
@@dynosaurmotorsports6241 thanks man, Miss him everyday, honestly I stopped street racing after that. Not worth it. He had a roll cage too which is ironic because it kept him from dying on impact from getting crushed but that was the reason he became trapped in the car. I guess if you have a cage, better have a fire extinguisher or fire extinguishing system in place
@@FerRod2113that's harrowing just reading about it. I'm sorry you went through that.
Or here's another idea, don't race on the street like a dipshit@@FerRod2113
@@FerRod2113
How did the roll cage trap him in the car? Did it collapse on impact thereby preventing his egress? RIP to your friend.
Btw, unlike you, some people never learn. I recently read an article about a man who was doing about 120 mph who hit another car causing it to flip multiple times, which caused the unaliving of the two occupants. The thing is, just a few months ago on the very same strip of road, the man’s own wife was unalived in a high speed car crash. 🤦♂️
Scary situation, you handled it super well remaining calm and doing what you had to do to get out safe, glad youre all good !
Thats insane... I'd literally sh*t myself in that situation... Glad you got out safe.
Dude what the fuck!????? Fast moving out of there!!! Thank GOD!!!!
yeah that was one quick exit. Amazing he didn't get hit with all the cars behind him.
Now thats a Hot lap there.
Now you can say you were on fire during your hot lap 😊
Wow dude. That was so fast. Glad you are ok.
It's crazy how fast this can happen. I saw a similar incident end with a way less than great outcome. Glad this one was OK.
you can clearly see some liquid spilling into the car as you brake into the corner before the flame light up, scary stuff, glad you are safe
Glad you're alright, that could have been a lot worse. So was it a cracked fuel tank, a fuel hose that came off, or something else? Or too hard to tell after the fact?
The OEM plastic fuel tank deformed due to heat and came in contact with the custom oversized driveshaft. It wasn’t a problem for 3 years until I removed the rear diffuser for a class change. Apparently the diffuser was efficient enough to extract heat from under the car.
@@ericmagnussen330 oof that's one heck of a delayed failure mode!
How did it end up so much inside the car?
@@simontist fuel lines are sometimes run inside the car for competition track vehicles, often hydraulic fluid lines breaking and spraying on to hot parts of the engine are the cause of instant big fires.
@@ChristopherWoods Nearly every org in the US forbids fuel lines from being run through the cabin. If the cell is in the trunk there must be a firewall.
Glad you are ok! That is what practice exiting and knowing your car look like.
Glad to hear you are alright! Impressive they managed to save (most) of the car too!
Fire suit FTW 🙌
Holy shit man, I'm glad you're alive.
Good job keeping calm! Glad you're okay.
Damn dude. So glad you got out.
glad youre ok thats crazy!

I always think about putting a fire extinguisher in my car.
It's that 1 in 100,000 chance something catches fire but when you roll that day and you don't have one...
Glad you're okay man!!
Wow
Well, it is a BMW, so not surprising. Anyway, glad that you're okay.
glad you're okay dude
Glad you got out ok. I've seen a few posts about this on FB and it looked as bad as the video shows.
What failed in the car that sent fire into the cabin that quickly?
he said there was a heavy smell of fuel then he rev matched downshifted causing the fuel to ignite
He wrote in a comment a few hours ago, "The OEM plastic fuel tank deformed due to heat and came in contact with the custom oversized driveshaft. It wasn’t a problem for 3 years until I removed the rear diffuser for a class change. Apparently the diffuser was efficient enough to extract heat from under the car."
Thank you!
@ChristopherWoods
That’s nuts, glad you’re ok!
I hope the damage wasn't too bad. Did you have onboard extinguishers? Split OEM tank with it being that close to the exhaust, nasty. You'll be going internal cel I wager!
That track map tho
Glad he had all the safety gear, a few years ago that would have been a fatal incident, but I'm sure he walked away.
Cant believe the car didnt have an on board fire system ??? Is this just a home-made track day car ?
Is it better to stop in the middle of the track like this immediately or try to get into the grass? I noticed that Radical or whatever spun out trying to avoid you. I feel like it could have been a lot worse if someone rear ended.
It probably would have been better if he went to the grass in hindsight, but dude was literally on fire so I think where he stopped was the least he was thinking about lol.
@@SlickDisaster26 Yeah, don't get me wrong I would probably do the same thing. Panic makes you do irrational things. I just think it's a good lesson learned for all of us because it could have been a whole lot worse.
Ive been under a car that burst into flames into a gasoline fire. Left 2 of my best drills and my creeper down there. Got up faster than the man beside me already on his feet lol. You dont do too much thinking when you feel the heat of those flames brother. You only think as much as you need to. I didnt have a fire suit either but i moved so quickly that i only lost hair on my arm.
😂 so he could burn down the track also
My visor was open so when the explosion occurred I shut my eyes. Didn’t open them until I was climbing out and checked for traffic behind. I have hundreds of laps on this track and had a good sense of where I was.
Jesus that's scary!
You can see the gasoline getting sprayed across the interior just a second before the flames.
fucking terrifying...
holy shit
That'll waken you up in the morning. Burst lines are trouble.
Eject! Eject! Eject!
Who has fuel lines running on the interior of a car?

See my other videos for personal best at this track haha
@@ericmagnussen330 Still your hottest lap
not great that the fuelpump kept on priming lol
The kill switch key was plastic and melted to my glove. I will be using push button killswitches moving forward.
Wow! Glad u are OK. Do u know the cause of this?
That on white car drifting to a stop was wicked asf ngl
This is what fireproof underwear is gonna save you in😂 cough cough
if that radical hit you whilst it was burning it could have been so much worse
accidentally shift 6th to 2nd?

hi obeseperson, have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest viewing the 13 part series _what on earth happened_ in my about to learn how the earth is not a globe
@@flat-earther troll
Glad you are ok, is the fuel line inside the cabin? If not, how did the fuel end up burst into flame in the cabin? Just curious.
Usually for racing, you need to have a mechanical fuel shutoff valve in the interior, next to the battery kill switch next to the window so it's easily accessible to the driver and to safety personnel in the event the driver is unconscious. So fuel lines will need to be partially rerouted into the interior. He could have also installed an aftermarket fuel cell/tank to the passenger seat if the racing series allows that. He had a leak and fuel vapors is gas so gas can seep through anything and that is was actually ignites. You can watch videos of people dousing a match using fuel.
The stock fuel tank deformed due to heat and dumped a large quantity of gas quickly. Vapor came up through the OEM vents under the rear bumper due to vacuum in the cabin and was ignited by a flame out the exhaust on a downshift.
@@ericmagnussen330that's fucking crazy. Swiss cheese model in full effect.

No. It doesn't.

It’s wise to wear protective clothing and comfortable walking shoes whenever driving a BMW.
That’s BMWs for you! 😂
thats called motorsports
How was there gasoline inside the car?
Probably a loose fuel line
Vapor entered through OEM vents under the rear bumper.
@@ericmagnussen330 thanks. I'm gonna check my car for similar openings near the gas tank. Very glad you're ok.
I don’t see how a gas leak from your fuel tank led to fire in the cockpit and later in engine compartment. Was there a fuel cell in the trunk that was improperly installed? Fuel lines leading through the cockpit? Why was there fire in the engine compartment when the tank is at the rear? What really caused the fire, and why are you being so reluctant to divulge it?
Damn dude, got questions?
These cars pass insane inspections before being aloud onto the track at these speed levels so this is just a freak accident
Probably didn't have the firewall or trans tunnel sealed off properly. People tend to cut the trans tunnel up when doing engine and transmission swaps, and then with the gutted interior, there's nothing at all preventing air or fuel vapours blowing in through those holes.
The stock plastic fuel tank deformed due to heat under the car and came into contact with the custom oversized driveshaft. It dumped several gallons of fuel under the car and vapor entered the cabin through the OEM vents under the rear bumper cover (that every e46 has) due to pressure differential at 100+ mph. It was ignited by a flame out of the exhaust on a rev match downshift. I smelled fuel for 1-2 seconds and when it ignited I knew it was bad. The car has been 100% reliable for 3 years and has 3 national championships along with 3 regional championships. The failure may have been caused by the removal of a rear diffuser for a class change (it won 2 races in this configuration before the failure occurred).
hey! that BMW thinks he's a Volkswagen!
This dude just money shifted 🤣😂🤣😂
No fire suppression system mandated? That seems unreasonable.
yup
It has fire suppression. Obviously it was no match for a leaking gas tank and about 8 gallons of fuel.
Yeah, I'm going to go check my fuel lines right now.
We lost one of our best cameramen that day.
At 113 not 130
this is just a tuesday for BMW drivers
Heh, you know what GM stands for? Fix it again, Tony.
'PromoSM'
Maybe race a diesel instead
Or EV
Why no fire system in the car?
It has a fire system. Absolutely no match for 8 gallons of gasoline and a ruptured tank.
