I’m just a Kansas boy stationed up in Alaska watching videos of people eating at KC BBQ. I miss it equally as much as a hug from mom. They both bring the same amount of joy.
Jim was in KC around Feb 20. So this show, and the Superbowl, were basically two of the coolest things to happen before quarantine, in the same city. Thanks for the reminder. 😁

Lived in KC for nearly 30 years and I absolutely must insist that you go to Jack Stack's and order the fried mushrooms with your amazing barbeque dinner. You will never have fried mushrooms like these again! 🤤😍

Joe's is awesome! I stopped in with a couple hours before a flight home from a business trip. I had no idea what I wanted. I told them I had been traveling a loop through Kansas and Missouri for 10 days, had just enough free time to stop in, and wanted to take some bbq to my wife... what would be good for 3 hours until I got back home?
Well, it became a big deal! Three people came and talked to me, even with a line to the door. They walked me through all the items they had, gave me stuff frozen for shipping, packed and sealed it, gave me several bottles of sauce, and detailed instructions on properly reheating it.
That night my wife and I had delicious bbq thanks to them. Amazing service and food!
I will never reach this level of joy in my life. God Bless you Jim.

That KC Joe's is the original and is the best! I'm lucky to live close enough to get it delivered during the quarantine. In KC, BBQ is life!

The quality of Gates has dropped off & the consistency isn't very good.
Used to be my favorite but Joe's is the best.

I took my students to Skills USA in Kansas City in 2008. I taught them how to talk to strangers. Ha. I told them to go up to absolutely anyone here, and ask, who has the best BBQ in town. AND! because we had a per diam , we went to every BBQ place we heard about. It was so much fun!!!!
I am cracking up at the thought of you trying to teach them to talk to strangers, then walking into Gates and the lady screams " how can I help you!!"
That's a brilliant way to teach them, because every person in KC will have a response, filled with passion!

I just moved to Overland Park, which is near KC. One day, I was feeling exhausted from dealing with 3 kids in quarantine, and we decided to order out for the first time in a long time. That was some real good bbq!
Which place did you go to?
Hayward’s is my favorite spot: they were originally in Overland Park on 101st and Antioch. Now they’re on 75th street in Shawnee but I highly recommend you check them out. I hear OP and think of Hayward’s
There's a Q-39 on Antioch and College.
ZARDA is good BBQ as well as Jack Stack, and if you don't mind a little drive go to Famous Daves.
Overland Park is a great place to live, I hope to return someday. 😀

As someone who has lived in KC their whole life, all of this is spot on. Still confused on cheese with BBQ though!!

I've had good BBQ all over the world........ (yes, even India and Norway somehow have good BBQ).
BUT, you will never have it better than in Kansas City!!! The smoke, the sauce, the seasoning, the TLC, whatever they put in the water to make even weekend BBQ crusaders good at making BBQ, it's just wonderful!!! Tender, flavorful, delicious BBQ that screams, "Even in death i'm doing something right!"
Great now I'm making BBQ today. Thanks Jim for sharing and all you do to help us all keep sane during insane times.

I'm vegan too (not raw), and I watched him eat this giant pile of meat and thought about Kansas City and their culture. Also, Jim is such a great human being.

Ooh, thanks for texting me this!! 😃 So glad I got to see your show here in KC in Feb before the quarantine, thanks for coming! Smokehouse is my absolute fave, so glad you got their bbq. Makes sense since they have a location in Independence where you were performing. Yes, their bbq is more sweet, which is why I like it. If you want cheese 🧀, you can get the cheesy corn! (Sorry, it involves a vegetable 😂) Also, their coleslaw is the best! It's creamy & on the sweet side. It's really delish. And their beans, I'm already drooling. We had Smokehouse a few wks ago & I'm feeling another curbside pick-up there is eminent. Enjoying your Dinner With the Gaffigans. You make it look so easy getting dinner together for 7 ppl. Your kiddos are adorable! Take care & stay well! ❤

I remember the first time I ate at Kansas City Joe's (Oklahoma Joe's at the time). A friend suggested we eat BBQ at the gas station. I thought he was joking. Nope! It was a working gas station with a line out the door and down the sidewalk. It was amazing for sure! That was 10 years ago and I still eat there. I ate there last Thursday at the Overland Park location. But you got K&M, Oden's, Sneads, Zarda's, Rosedale, LC's, Smokehouse, Gates, Jack Stack, Jack Wagon and about 10 others I can't remember at the moment. I haven't eaten bad BBQ in KC maybe ever?

I lived in KC for eight years! Loved Smoke Stack BBQ. Don’t know if it’s still there anymore but it was amazing.

Exactly! For most of my life -over five decades- I’ve never been a ‘fan’ of barbecue. It was always like babies to women to me; “what’s all the fuss about?” I would sneer - until I had my own. I traveled with my son last year to KC to see the Big Boy. On arrival, we headed over to the ‘gas station’ for dinner. It was as Jim says in line. When I took my first bite (I got ribs and burnt ends) I sat agape: “0h. Ohhh. Now I get it. I just never had good barbecue.” It a was religious experience.

Lived in KC 7 years. Love the BBQ!! They have so many good places and different kinds of foods there. Very diverse. Korma Sutra is great Indian food. My favorite there is there lamb korma and garlic Naan with chai to drink. J Gilbert's is the best steak house I've ever been to. The steaks melt in your mouth. Don't even need a knife to cut them.

Did a KC BBQ crawl last month tried: Rosedale, Slaps, Joe’s KC. Woodyard, LC’s, Q39, Gates, Jack Stack and Arthur Bryant’s was my favorite!!
I love Arthur Bryant’s, don’t get me wrong, but Gates on Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd is still my heart!!!

Everyone in KC has their own favorite place. Gates for this, LC's for that, Arthur Bryant's, Oklahoma Joe's, and Jack Stack. But then again every one who is born and raised Kansas city also has their own smoker and their own rubs and sauces. we barbecue daily no matter the weather as with tailgating. the best time to come to Kansas City is during a Fourth of July or Memorial Day party drive-thru Andy neighborhood and you're guaranteed to get a plate of some of the locals finest

SLAPS BBQ, right on the Missouri-Kansas state line in KC, is unquestionably the BEST BBQ I’ve ever had. I’ve only had it once, and I’ve been dreaming about it ever since.

I'm from Kansas City and we're have some great BBQ. We also have a lot of bad BBQ and many more in between. I've had enough great BBQ in Dallas and Memphis to know KC isn't the only great BBQ but we do have several really great joints. I just worry people will be in KC and hit one of the crappy joints and then write off KC que. I always say the smoke always smells good. That didn't mean the food inside will be any good.

@@kctechie The best BBQ I've had was in KC. I was at Freightliner for repair/service on a truck I was bringing to California. I was unexpectedly delayed over night, so I took off walking towards downtown and found a rig about 4 miles in. They were in a parking lot, it was 2 trucks, Father & Son, 1 pulled a box trailer and the other was the smoker.......
I had a brisket dinner plate, and most of a rack of BB ribs, then took a $8 box of tips and snouts w/ potato salad to go. Their sauce was incredible and that dinner was soo good, melting tender meat! But honestly the >

Man, there is BBQ at a restaurant in Bolton, MS. Man they have some good food to go with the BBQ. Whenever I miss meat, I will come back here and look at that platter. They can cook down south. I miss the roadside food stands.
